    FREE Beer?
Last Saturday afternoon was the FSU (Florida State University) bar crawl in GaYBOR/Ybor City. 99% of the huge crowd were fine the other 1% gave us something to laugh about. About 5 PM two FSU “Yaah Who’s” were walking west on 7th ave. Both had their FSU shirts off and tucked into their falling down shorts. With beer belly’s hanging out the pair were full of team spirit and booze. Shouting out go team and ” F” this and “F” that.
As they disappeared down the street a highly bright glossy painted car with huge expensive rims, loud boom boom music & way to expensive paint job drove by. The car stopped in front of NY,NY Pizza. The guys inside the car wanted to impress the girls eating pizza on the street cafe. They squealed the tires in a spin out then broke the cars axle!!! LOL
Blocking traffic the police were called to help. While waiting for the tow truck the police closed the street down and detoured the traffic.  Just when this scene couldn’t get any funnier here come the touting “Yaah Who’s” walking back. This time they were in the middle of the now closed 7th Ave. Still shouting go team & “F” this & “F” that. They actually had a cheap 12 pack of beer under their arms and an open can of beer in the other hand. The 2 FSU guys walked right into the police! LOL LOL
Then they started a fight with the police. I’m sure this was a proud moment for their Mothers! The guys were handcuffed and sat down on the curb waiting for the police pick up wagon.
Now the really funny part….. Just then a couple of Ybor’s homeless guys spotted the 12 packs in the street. The guys ran out and picked up the beer then quickly disappeared. The crowd was cheering the homeless guys.  The handcuffed guys started to yell, “POLICE ; POILCE They are stealing our beer!”
You just can not make this up!!! LOL

    In The Cows Pasture
In the past we have written about Tampa’s Crazy Billionaire, Gary. In his late 40’s Gary realized he was gay. Much to the displeasure of his wife and family. He actually had $20,000 (in cash) per week as his fun money allowance. He was an entrepreneur and scientist.
He did crazy fun things like… walking into a club and ordering every beer in the beer cooler. Have the bartenders then open all the beers and put the beers on the bars. Gary would then yell, “Beers on me guys!!!”
He would often fly off with newly met friends to Key West or fly with his executive jet account out to Las Vegas for a few days. He picked up the total tab staying at high end hotels like Bellagio and Caesar’s Palace, numerous times. We knew if we went we couldn’t make it back to open up the store.
For Carrie’s 50th Surprise Birthday Party, Mark organized a huge fancy party bus to take everybody from Metro in Tampa to Pleasure Island in downtown Disney.  Gary showed up at the bus with a case of 1999 Dom Perignom Champagne! Oh yes, it was very tasty!!!
After about an hours partying at Disney’s party park, Gary hooked up with a cute guy. He called his private limo to come and pick them up at Disney & take them back home. On the way back Gary decided to show off some of his 1000’s of acres of land and showing off some of his prized horses and imported Texas cattle herd right off of I-4. The limo got stuck driving across the rutted field in a cow pasture. No problem to Gary, he called his ranch manager at 12:30 am and had the ranch manager drive them the rest of the way back.

The Most Romantic Funeral Ever
There was a lesbian couple who were pillars of the Tampa LGBT Community. Their names were Bobby & Kay. The South Tampa couple had been together for over 50+ years. In her 80’s Bobby passed away. We all went to the funeral. Notes were placed in the coffin and she was cremated. A short 6 months later Miss Kay passed away. Miss Kay was what you would call a lipstick lesbian. Always dressed up with full hair & makeup too. In the coffin she looked like a Sleeping Princess. Hair was piled high & perfect a big beautiful broach pined on. Her hands had a french manicure and were folder over and resting on a pillow. During the beautiful service  both names were used together as one. The next day everybody learned the secret. In the pillow were Bobby ashes. Yes the two women who were so in love were now buried together. Bobby & Kay are together for ever.
Below is the articled we wrote 4 years ago…..

Two Sad Deaths in the Tampa Bay GLBTA Community this Week.
Goode Bye “Miss Kay” Thompson
Saturday, August 22, 2008 at 1 AM was the end of an era in the Tampa GLBT Community. Tampa Gay pioneer, activist, founder and tender loving classy Southern Belle, Miss Kay Thompson passed away. Kay was the loving Aunt, Mother and Friend to many in our community. Just a few months earlier Kay’s life partner of 50+ years, Bobby Smith had passed away. For many of us, they were one person “Bobby & Kay”!  Bobby, who was born a woman, lived his life as a man. Bobby was also a photographer who started to document the GLBT life in Tampa from the early 1940’s. Bar names in the community like Knotty Pine, Jimmy White’s, Coco Joe’s and so many more places are captured in pics. Today many of his photos are in the GLBT Archives at USF. In the 1960’s Bobby met his life partner, Miss Kay!  Together they purchased a home in South Tampa just off Bayshore Blvd. Bobby went to work at Golden Triangle Photography & Miss Kay opened her flower shop, Ashley Florists on MacDill Ave. across from Palma Ceia  Country Club. A note of unsolicited gratitude to Miss Kay for all the flowers she gave to AIDS victims funerals in Tampa Bay. ” She did it because others wouldn’t and were afraid.” she had told me years ago. Several years later Bobby & Kay , together with a handful of close friends, contacted Rev Troy Perry & were founding members of Metropolitan Community Church Tampa. Together Bobby & Kay lead our community by example.  Always loving and caring yet tough as nails. Never afraid to stand up to homophobia, human rights & injustice. They both were always at every major and minor GLBT Event, Demonstration & Celebration. Gay Prides, March on Washington, Film Festival, MCC Tampa… They were everywhere!!!  In their later years, the two were always surrounded by many friends.  Their extended family was beyond huge! The only comfort we have is in the fact that Bobby & Kay are together again in heaven.
Bobby & Kay are what legends are made from!

A Very Romantic Funeral
Last night we said our good byes to “Miss Kay”  Thompson. It was one of the most romantic funerals we have ever been to!!! Miss Kay was laid to rest in a beautiful powder blue coffin with chrome accents. Miss Kay was wearing a  very pretty red dress with a signature flashy gold pin. The way she always dressed, classy! Her hands were folded over a pillow with a photo of Bobby on it. The church was filled with flowers, music & memories.  Even Miss Kay’s pet song bird was there chirping. Kay’s Celebration of Life service was opened by MCC Tampa Senior Pastor, Rev. Phyllis Hunt & Founding Pastor of MCC Tampa, Rev Lee Carlton, now Senior Pastor at Mobile MCC. Also officiating were The Founding pastor of Tampa’s Potter’s House Fellowship, Rev Robert Morgan, Rev Todd Goewey and Rev. Dr. Kathy Rooke. At the start of the service the casket was closed and sealed for the final time. The 2 hour service was filled with many happy memories voiced of local Gay Rights pioneer couple, Bobby Smith & Kay Thompson. How they met in the 1950’s & founding days of MCC Tampa and their life together. The service was kinda like a part two since Bobby’s passing and funeral was just a few months before and you just couldn’t talk about one with out the other. At the closing as Miss Kay was escorted out, hands were clapping & people were moving & dancing to the hymn, “I’ll Fly Away”.  Now for the very romantic part…… Remember the pillow that Miss Kay’s hands were resting on with Bobby’s photo.  Inside that pillow were the cremated ashes of Bobby. May they rest together in peace forever.

Epilogue: A man at heart and in manner withstood a polarizing era

Stephanie Hayes, Times Staff Writer
In Print: Sunday, May 11, 2008

TAMPA — Some of Bobby Smith’s friends and cousins didn’t even know.

He was male, through and through — clothes, hair, mannerisms. He worked hard and paid the bills. He went to church each week. The love of his life, Kay, cooked dinner and cleaned their South Tampa home.

He lived confidently and no one questioned — for a while, not even his co-workers.

Then one day, he needed a hysterectomy.

He was called into the company HR office and was asked about the doctors and surgery report and operation.

Smith’s family and friends say “he.”

It’s not that the word “she” offended Smith. He didn’t hide the truth if someone asked. He was physically always a woman.

But he was never really a girl.

“It’s amazing, even in his baby pictures, he looks like a boy,” said Smith’s friend, Derald Gingerich. “I think if there was ever a case for a man inside a woman’s body, it was Bobby.”

He was born in Georgia. His father taught him to box. Smith begrudgingly wore dresses to school, then changed into overalls first thing after.

“I’ve always liked boy’s clothes,” Smith told the St. Petersburg Times in 1992. “I didn’t go to college because I would have had to wear a dress. But I took a look in the mirror and said, ‘You can go and make it big in the world, or you can be at peace with yourself and eat beans.'”

At 15, Smith kissed a girl for the first time. His mother hauled him to the doctor, called him crazy and forced him to take “female hog hormones” to make him right.

He wore men’s briefs and cut his hair. He read The Well of Loneliness, by lesbian author Radclyffe Hall.

Smith was openly gay during a polarizing era. He endured humiliation and belittlement. In the late 1940s, police in the midst of a gay witch hunt picked him up and forced him to strip.

On Thanksgiving in 1959, he met a woman named Kay Thompson at a bar. Thompson wasn’t sure if this skinny dance partner in slacks was a man or a woman. But she didn’t care.

“I met Bobby and we just got along,” said Thompson, 84.

They had a commitment ceremony in 1960 at the home of Smith’s mother, who stayed in her room. Smith wore a suit and Thompson wore a gown. They had cake.

Smith worked as a dark room technician and photographer. They settled into Thompson’s South Tampa home. They baked cakes at Christmas. Smith always turned out the lights in the kitchen to save money.

The couple positioned his and hers recliners in front of the television. They sat this way, always.

They inspired many people in Tampa’s gay community.

They marched on Washington and lobbied local council leaders. They mortgaged their house to help build Metropolitan Community Church of Tampa, a Christian church that welcomes gay people.

“We would not be where we are today… without Bobby’s passion and dedication to his principles and his faith and his belief that everybody ought to be respected,” said Phyllis Hunt, pastor of MCC Tampa.

Eventually, Thompson broke her hip and needed full care. Smith became exhausted and had some falls of his own. He had a strong heart but may have suffered ministrokes. He lost the will to live.

One night, Thompson said, Smith looked limp. She was in pain, but she got out of her chair. She stood next to him for the longest time, holding his hand.

On May 2, he died. He was 84.

Her Special Gift
There is a beautiful woman we know who looks like Marilyn Monroe.  She is a huge flirt and as far as we know has not worked in  many years. Lived in a beautiful gated  community near the beach. She always has at least one or two very well off rich boyfriends. She was dating a very young, handsome and rich software entrepreneur Juan. It was her birthday and Juan took her out for the night. Over the next couple days she called Juan many times and said, “The flowers, lobster dinner & cheap jewelry were nice, but I was really counting on something very special from you!”
After several calls like this Juan called her back and said, “I just left your home & left your big birthday gift there.” Delighted she called him back
“Is it parked in the drive way?”  Juan replied, “No, it’s in your living room” Is it a big new HD TV with sound system I wanted?” Juan, “No!” “Then it must be the new painting from the art gallery I liked.” Juan “No it’s a perfect gift just for you!!!”
When she arrived home as she jumped out of the car the neighbors could hear her scream WTF!!!!
There in the living room in the center of the big front window……. Juan had  a sleek shiny metal stripper pole installed!!! They broke up after that.
We like Juan’s style & wondered where he is today!!! LOL LOL

Every weekend GaYBOR/Ybor welcome 10’s of 1,000’s of visitors. Actually a very small town in many ways. Everybody who lives-works here basically know everybody else. That is why this is so GaYBOR/Ybor.  Late one night a famous bartender was out having many, many, cocktails. We will call her Mary Sue. She stumbled out of the bar and right into the arms of local police office. With out missing a beat Mary Sue looked right at the officer and said “Oh Hi…Officer (name) You better help me get a ride home before we call the POLICE!!” The police here are our friends too. The office smiled and said “Yes you are right LOL LOL LOL” Then he stopped a friend of Mary Sue and asked them to give her a ride home. LOL LOL

Obituary

Wayne Palmer, Owner of DT’s Bar in St. Pete
Dallas “Wayne” Palmer passed this week. The very first day I bartended at Grand Central Station on Central Ave in St. Petersburg Wayne walked in. He ordered a beer and then told me he has a “Permanent $1.00 key on the cash register.”
OMG He really did!!! Wayne told me that he had been coming to this bar for many years. When it came up for sale he purchased the club. Wayne named the bar DT’s. This stood for Dallas (his real first name)  & Turn. Thus DT’s was Dallas’s Turn to own the club. When Wayne sold the club to Grand Central Station there was a $1.00 beer clause in the contract. He left a special statement to be released after his death by his son Dave. . Here it is….
If you don’t already know, my father and friend, Dallas “Wayne” Palmer passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2013. He was 75 years old and had struggled to breathe for quite some time. He left some final words with instructions for me to send everybody. Here they are:

By the time you read this, I will be gone from this world.  Please do not grieve for me – I’d much rather you celebrate my long and enjoyable life by having a good time of your own making.  I just wanted you to know that I really enjoyed your company — some of you for longer than others – and wanted to thank you sincerely for your time spent with and for me.
We plan to honor his wishes on Saturday, July 27, 2013:
Hospice South County Community Service Center
3050 1st Avenue South
St. Petersburg, FL 33712
The service starts at 10:00 am and will be followed by a brunch. Dad was a long time volunteer so in lieu of flowers, please donate generously to: AIDS Service Association of Pinellas (ASAP).
Hope to see you Saturday,
Dave Palmer

    The Bird Whisper’er of GaYBOR
We have all heard many stories about Ybor’s Bud & his birds. Many people say that chickens walk up to him as if to be talking with Bud.  His other half Jeffy says that many times Bud comes home with a chicken under his arm.  The birds sitting on his porch talking to all hours of the day with him. Some times Bud takes them into his bedroom and in the morning the birds are still there watching him. One day we were all sitting inside the Crow Bar in Ybor yakking with bartender/owner Bonnie.  The afternoon crowd had grown to a couple of dozen people chatting and enjoying a hot Ybor afternoon. A colorful pigeon flew into the bar thru an open door. The bird then tried to fly out but went into a closet by mistake. The next thing we know there is Bud with the bird in his hands. He said, “the poor little bird is scared because there is no sky above her.”
The bird actually looked like it was talking with Bud. Then Bud put the bird on his shoulder and together walked out the door! You just can not make this up!!

Sam (Sammy) Joseph Campisi
1956 – 7-15-2013
This week our good friend Sammy passed away after a long illness. We met Sammy at the very first GaYBOR District Coalition meeting at 714 Bar in 2007. Immediately we became good friends. Sammy lived on the second floor above JJ’s Cafe on 7th ave & 16th in Ybor City.  Jokingly, we nick named him Sammy Camp-Easy. He was a very good story teller and liked to talk about his family, daughter, Italy, Cuba & the Tampa Bay gay scene. He was a good friend and fellow Italian Club member to our late photographer friend. Rex Maniscalco.
One day Sammy invited us to go to the Italian Cemetery for a guided tour by him. He was such a great story teller that we asked if we could film him. Sammy said, “Of course!”  The cemetery was taken care of with manicuring hands. The cemetery even has an annual picnic! The pictures on the tops of the tombstones said so much and are quite unique. The history lesson that Sammy narrated was and is very much a historical documentary. The names, the people he related to where some of the interesting facts he instilled. What business they had! What town in Sicily they came from!  Interaction of small tidbits of his growing up and how they were related. Everyone in Sammy’s life was relation. Uncle, aunt or cousin!
We were told a story many years ago about a young soldier seen in the cemetery by some women cleaning and pruning the cemetery. He was dressed very smart in uniform. The lady was helped up by the young Italian boy and she asked who was his family? In turning around he just disappeared! We were told that the young soldier ghost had been spotted and was greeted a number of times by different people at the cemetery.
The short historical documentary was posted on You Tube with information on how to help fund the Tampa Italian society.
Then a couple days later, we received an upset letter from a gentleman from the Italian Club. We told Sammy that we didn’t realize that we had done something wrong. In full Sammy style he said, “Who wrote you? I know most likely know who ever it was! Oh don’t worry I will take care of it.”
The next day Sammy said, “I called my mother & she called his mother & everything is OK now!!”
LOL and RIP dear friend, Sammy!
Sammy’s wake will be tonight 7-16-13 at the Boza & Roel Funeral Chapel. Located at 4730 N. Armenia Ave in Tampa. Please feel free to send Sammy’s daughter Ava condolence & good memories at avacampisi@gmail.com

    The Homeless are People too.
When we opened our MC FILM store on Central Ave in St. Pete, there was a huge plywood sign on the building. We took it down and leaned it up against the building in the back alley side.   One day coming to work we noticed a homeless person was sleeping under the sign.  We didn’t say anything. After all he wasn’t hurting anything or bothering anybody. He actually was unofficially watching over and safeguarding our place at night. The area was in a very high crime zoned policed     area.
He was there for several weeks then we didn’t see him again. A couple months went by when a nice guy walked into our store. To our surprise he told us that he was the homeless guy that was sleeping under our sign. He went on to say that he knew we saw him and thanked us for not kicking him out. He had some problems and lost everything. He was actually working day labor and saved enough money to rent a room and start over. Then thanked us again & left. We never saw him again.

You Can Not Make This Up.

There was a huge big box closed-up club in Ybor City. The big club went on the auction block. The new owners were trying to lease out the newly acquired club with potential new promoters. They noticed things started to go missing in the closed club. Sound equipment, expensive lighting, furniture, even sinks were missing. The new owners changed the locks and the problem still continued.
Then on one hot summer afternoon the realtor & club owner was showing the club. The electricity was turn off so they were going thru the club with big flash lights.  All of a sudden the club was full of bright light!!! To the shock of everybody inside, the sky light had just been opened. Then dropping in came a ladder.
People started to crawl down the ladder and into the club. The startling sight almost made the club owner have a heart attack!!
To the surprise of the intruders they were stopped and asked, “What the Hell Are you F**king Doing?”
They said that they “heard noises from next doors and were checking out that everything was OK.”
LOL LMAF!!! The police were not called but suddenly nothing else went missing.
