This years Tampa International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival will be Oct 5- 13th. The 2012 TIGLFF Launch Party is Sept. 21, 6:30 at Tampa Museum of Art. Also a novel Food Truck Rally is October 5th, 6-11PM at Tampa Theatre.

Hillsborough County seeks interested residents to serve on its newly created Diversity Advisory Council. The Council was created to facilitate communication between Hillsborough County government and its diverse populations, and to address matters related to diversity that affect County
government and its citizens. The Council will be appointed by the Board of County Commissioners and be comprised of two individuals from each of the 12 categories below, for a total of 24 members:****

The Richard L. Schlegel Legion of Honor Award for Emerging Activist is administered by the Center for Diversity & Inclusion at American University in Washington, D.C. It recognizes a young individual (in high school or an undergraduate in college) who is living in the United States who has made outstanding contributions to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities. The recipient will receive a cash award and includes travel expenses for attending the Annual GLBT Studies Symposium on November 10, 2012.

The 2012 Richard L. Schlegel Award will be presented at the Annual GLBT Studies Symposium on November 10, 2012. Nominations will be accepted from now through Friday, October 12, 2012.

     I am sure you know Gay people are everywhere and we do mean everywhere. Did you know one of our favorite past times is to having cocktails with friends and dishing about how bad straight people behave?!?!? LOL YES, it’s true. Did the largest convention in Tampa’s history, the visiting RNC ever give us all a lot to converse about. Many funny stories started with, “You will Not believe this!!!” Here is a sample of what we heard. The rest of this dish allegedly happened. Nothing is confirmed true or false.

    Over & over again we heard “The RNC guests were some of the worst we have ever seen.” Rude, obnoxious, drunken are just some of the nice words to describe the delegates. The police had way more problems with the delegates than the protesters. Fights with over charging prostitutes & novel gouging drug dealers. Vandalism, stealing & looting was the norm. Were told to look the other way or to be fired over and over again. State ‘Delegates’ walking out on their monstrous bar tabs and even lavish dinners. Trashed hotel rooms & condom littered limos. Bras found hanging on secured area hotel chandeliers. What has happened to our friendly West Coast city? The better than you attitude was everywhere. There were more plastic AMSCOT credit card neuvo rich than at a tupperware party. A call to room service…”We need a drawer full of knives right now to stick in our friends backs!!!” A group of ladies were not patiently waiting for more shrimp to be put on the all you can stuff yourself table when they actual said “What is it with you people and those cigars? It must be a southern Gay fixation!!!” then all laughed… WTF???
    The encrypted gold invites to board the crowded mega yacht spaces at the Tampa marina were selective. At least $150 million in their personal or offshore accounts was the low benchmark. Wow 225′ luxury vessels are still called a yacht? The Coast Guard protected area had helicopters dropping off guests from the sky. And we thought those were all Apache Attack helicopters. Some of the small problems billionaires have we guess. What exactly is ‘Crossroads’ anyway?
    Free food events was like a cowbell! Haven’t these people eaten anything but Spam! I thought that the police escorted convoy of beer trucks was just to much! Well, maybe needed! There were so many events with free lunches given away I think many local restaurateurs went to save on money on their weeks food bills. And there were only 2 ticketed cigar smoking conservative conferences this year.
    Taking down colorful Rainbow & Democratic flags & all those women posters. One little yellow bird told us, “If I hear… You obviously don’t know who ‘ I ‘ am?… one more time again!!” I need an Advil!!
The difference between a RNC delegate and a canoe is? … the canoe tips. Wearing Alexander Amosu Silk lined suits, double starched OTR Ike Behar White shirts & Gucci Silk Ties, all knock offs, then complaining about the inside heat? Just go outside girl!!! It’s August in Florida…Really?? LOL
    Then there was the big Mormon Building on the river… The Marry-ville Riverfront. Described by many as a “big out of control summer camp for juvenile delinquents running wild everywhere.” One little light blue bird told us, “There were so many people crying behind the scenes you would have thought Judy Garland or Princess Diana had just died.” Oh the “Me first…Me first” shadowed empresses denounced. How can so called “church people” be so mean, cruel & insensitive? I guess it isn’t hard!!! We need NBC’s Saturday Night Live’s “Church Lady” to revisit us all now!. Very expensive red Maserati cars were delivered by covered transport trucks to the hotels front door. Let’s just say major attitude were driving those cars who weren’t afraid of telling off the police. Maybe we were lucky not to have more of them in GaYBOR/Ybor City. Much of this you will never hear or will be denied. One thing is for sure…The RNC remenances will have the Gay Bars chattering & laughing for quite awhile!!! I’m sure there were some nice people somewhere. But it’s much more fun to talk about the out of control straight bad ones.
    What about the GLBT Log Cabin Republicans? We didn’t see any of them! Humm… must have been busy practicing hiding in their Motel 8 closets. LOL LOL We are Voting for OBAMA.

    Our phone started to ring off the hook from across America. Everybody was saying “OMG we just saw your store on TMZ!!!” The TV Show TMZ TV had caught Homophobic Illinois’ Republican Congressman Aaron Schock, in GaYBOR in front of MC Film – Gay Pride Store, The Ybor Social -A GLBT Bar & The Ybor Resort & Spa – The Gay Bath House!!! ( From Wikipedia: Schock voted against amending federal hate crimes laws to include crimes where the victims were targeted on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender and disability. He voted against the repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell“ in December 2010. Schock is opposed to gay marriage.Schock opposes abortion and has voted to prohibit federal funding for the procedure.) Aaron Schock was asked by TMZ about GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan physique & clothing.
     We think the real questions should have been, “What are you doing walking around in the GaYBOR District?”  Come here often? Hum……  Is it true you actually have a boyfriend/ Staff Advisor? Who was the guy walking with you & laughing? Why did you wink to the reporter at the end? Once again, GaYBOR Saved the day in Historic Ybor City.
    Labor Day Sunday FunDay GaYBOR Style was a huge success. The GaYBOR members pulled together and turned a quiet Sunday into a very busy Saturday night. All the GaYBOR Members were very busy. The GaYBOR Bar Crawl started at Barbarella’s with 150+ Party People. The group made their way thru 9 clubs spreading Labor Day Cheer! At the last stop Bradley’s on 7th they were treated to a wonderful, fantastic buffet. Hamburger Mary’s kicked the day off with their Famous Sunday Brunch! Later in the day they had the Legendary Lady Bunny Performing. Romantic dinners at The Laughing Cat & New sidewalk dinning at The Row Boat. New York, New York Pizza had the outside tables filled. The Ybor Social hosted the “Ybor Eagle Reunion Party.” A full day of Friends, Family, Great Food,Cigars, Cocktails & Shopping. To end the day off there was a 4 dimensional Light & Sound, “Black Light – Glow Party” at The Honey Pot. Viva La GaYBOR!!!!

People Are Talking
    What a week for Tampanians and Yborites. A week long RNC conservative experience convention and yes those parties. This is what we are hearing from all over Tampa. “We are ‘glad’ that they came and we are ‘so glad’ they have left.” The end results of the convention will be felt by the new tourists See our Mark & Carrie Special RNC Daily Diary Blog on our take of the last weeks RNC convention. www.MCFILM.co . The Ybor Resort & Spa had FREE entry into the spa for all Republican Delegates and Staff. Interesting!
    We heard that when Hamburger Mary’s owner, Kurt King picked up the famed comedic bushel basket hair wearing Lady Bunny from the airport they had to pull over and stop the car. Not for security sake. Lady Bunny had Kurt in stitches laughing so hard! What admirable Facebook letter we received from ABC Action News reporter/ friend, Chris Martinez. Friday was his last sign off on the local network with over 9 years behind his belt telling and reporting events in Tampa Bay. In his FB letter he said, “Thank You Uncles Mark & Carrie.” We wish him great success!
    There were so many positive aspects in reporting news stories in Tampa for the RNC last week. We hope that all those positive stories turn into return visits to Tampa Bay. We heard that Tampa was ready for the RNC but the RNC wasn’t quite ready for Tampa. We have to say that historic Ybor City was a ghost town.Yes the lights were on at a few places. Tampa, delegates told the media, was a sleeper of a city and most were not aware of the very mixed diverse cultural area what we had to offer. Now let’s see what the city of Charlotte, NC will do for the National Democratic Convention this week. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn will be at the DNC in Charlotte. This time as a Florida delegate. I bet there will be some major contrasts. GLBTA delegates & At Large Delegates from Tampa include Sally Phillips, Ercilia Albistu,, Alan Clendenin & Marilyn Cappiello.

The Republican Convention was in town. We were seeing all kinda of crazy things. One day a big black SUV pulled up in front of our store. Out jumped 4 police offices in khaki sand uniforms. To our surprise they ran up to our super sized painted board cut outs of Dorothy & Leather man and started to take photos. Then jumped back into the suv and drove off!

in the world. Its 60-bell carillon is set within a 205-foot tall Late Gothic
Revival tower designed by architect Milton B. Medary. The carillon delights
visitors with 30-minute concerts every day. Housed in a majestic marble and
coquina bell tower, the carillon at Bok Tower Gardens consists of 60 bronze
bells ranging in weight from 16 pounds to nearly 12 tons. It is one of four
carillons in Florida.

Whether you have just one hour or a full day, you’ll find so much to
experience here. Among these are the informal woodland gardens which contain
more than 1,000 plant types, which were designed as a meditative woodland
landscape and nature preserve. Paths meander through open spaces and
plantings to create tranquil resting spots with picturesque vistas of the
Tower and the Florida countryside.

The opening of The Full Monty

The show that I have talked about, prepared for (and dieted for) is FINALLY HERE! And…..it has been a labor of love. The Full Monty opens next Thursday, September 6, at the BEAUTIFUL Cuban Club on 15th and Palm in Ybor City and runs four performances 9/6,7 at 8pm and 9/8 at 2pm and 8pm. Tickets are $22. Thank you to all my closest business associates for your support. You have all been supportive, encouraging and patient! Many of you have sponsored ads in our program and helped in many ways. I know you are all probably sick of hearing about the show. But your support has meant a lot.

I was first attracted to the piece because it is a musical that deals with the male experience. It deals with issues of parenting, loss of a job, loss of intimacy, marriage, body issues to name a few. Seldom do you find a piece that deals with male empowerment. Further, it is a great piece for our economy! We have assembled a very talented cast and it truly is a show that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer as our six working class guys from Buffalo bear all but get back so much!
