EL GOYA Reunion

    Friday night was an El Goya Reunion Party and brought back great memories of days past. Bradley’s on 7th was the host to the 30 year old kindling. Hosted by Joey Brooks and a cast of performing entertainers that haven’t performed in years. Attending and performing were some of the Ybor City’s Golden Days Drag stars. The numbers and outrageous outfits were spectacular. Bobbie Lake, Melanie Minyon, Gilda Golden and Joey Brooks. The place was packed with memory hounds, well wishers and renewed friendship seekers. Also was longtime area favorite Drag Star, “Hey Everybody” Stephanie Shippae.
    Memories of the 1980’s days of the very popular gay bar were portrayed by the smiles, talents and friendships that people developed. This was a very visual exciting youthful gay bar that many found out and acted upon their true inner feelings and found a comfort zone.
    “Straight or gay, El Goya was a very popular place to take visiting dignitaries to.” said former Tampa Mayor Dick Greco. ” Most people had never even seen a real drag show and it was a very interesting place to take our city’s VIP visiting guests. I loved it. And so did the guests.”
    “Mayor Dick Greco had a reserved table in the front of the stage whenever he wanted it.” commented reunion host Joey Brooks.
    Ybor City’s famous El Goya closed in late 1980’s changed to Tracks and then Pleasure Dome and now Czar.
“It was so unique back then in Ybor City that it was one of 2 businesses that stayed open after dark, the Columbian Restaurant and El Goya. “ said Horst Glamsh, a lifelong Tampa Bay resident, bartender and El Goya Bar frequenter.

    The last day to register to vote in the upcoming Florida General Election is October 9th. The General election is November 6th.
Go to the Supervisor of Elections office in your county to register and get more information on the early voting, mail ballots and absentee ballots.

Hillsborough County Candidates / Precinct Leaders Summit
Over 100 Hillsborough County Democrats and candidates came together at the West Tampa Library for an informative seminar on local political points of view. Heading up the pep rally was Democratic activist Jacquelyn Beiro. Some of Florida’s top ranking members included Former Florida Governor Democratic candidate Alex Sink, Florida State Representative Janet Cruz, U.S. House of Representatives, District 17 candidate Will Bronson and local Hillsborough County Democrat Precinct Committee Members.
Hot topics were; Voter suppression, Tolls to help organize precincts and district, Identifying leaders precincts/ districts, How to steer volunteers to specific campaigns and organizations and VOTE “NO” on ALL the 11 proposed amendments.
    “Alex spoke and looks so relaxed and informative.” said an East Tampa precinct leader. “She is so polished and down to earth. I think she is more governortorial now than 2 years ago!”
    That was an undertone subtle message observed by all the attendees. She was articulate, calm and very down to earth speaking. It was a very different Alex Sink! Just saying.
    “Did you see Rachael Maddows Show on MSNBC. She held up Hillsborough County ballot with 6 voter pages for the upcoming election.” said Sink. “It is going to be a huge voters headache.”
Florida Rep Janet Cruz said that in a lot of political races Republicans put in ” Nuisance Candidate” with no desire to campaign but just to have their names on the ballot!
    The long list of 11 proposed Florida amendments is long and gibberish in language. What one might think they are voting for could be just the opposite.
That is why we are also saying…. VOTE “NO” on ALL the ballot amendments!

    Buffalo Wild Wings is coming to Ybor. Chicken Wings, beer and Sports on TV is the success that the new anchor eatery taut. The new chicken bar will be at the corner of 7th Ave and 17th Street ( the old Platforms & Shine Bar). Their success story in 5 years in remarkable.     We are sorry to report that the all so popular diner, Fresh Mouth Restaurant in Centro Ybor closed its doors Sunday night. It had the best burgers and cheese steaks. The other operations associated with Fresh Mouth are still open. JJ’s Cafe and Centro Cantina in Centro Ybor. Look forward to the opening of the new wine bar in Centro Ybor in the old Wear Me Out store. Another new opening digs is opening Sunday nights at AJA in Channelside and called Lucky Sunday !
    A new 70’s night is starting at City Side with new VJ/DJ Greg Anderson. More people have stopped us to tell us of their disappointment in the cutting down of trees in Ybor. Most recently Tampa Tribune columnist, Steve Otto said in his column to stop the murder of trees in Ybor City! Well, Tampa Parks Dept have contracted out to start replacing the 110 cut down trees with new Crape Myrtles on 13th Street by the Noriega Parking Garage. A large group from Bradley’s on 7th charted a bus and are off to Busch Garden’s Howl-O-Scream. It will be a scary transformed terrorizing gruesome night. The fright night experience is weekends thru out October at the amusement park. Hey guys … BOO!

Tampa Streetcar Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary
The TECO Line Streetcar System will be celebrating October 20, its 10th Anniversay Tampa Streetcar Celebration with 10 cent rides ALL Day! Special entertainment will be all along the streetcar line from Downtown Tampa to Ybor City. Bands, performers and a great decade of branding Tampa in celebration. Come early and stay late!

    We were at this very fancy Gay Holiday Party. There was a very elegant buffet set up with the finest crystals & silver. Then the host announced everybody to the buffet and said “Let the children go first” We looked around & the host was pointing toward us!!! OMG!!! To be fair there were people in their 90’s at the party.
     I was in a very festive mood aka cocktailed. So I put a couple meat balls on my plate. Then turn to talk with somebody when the meat balls rolled off the plate and into the chocolate fondue. Very gracefully I reached for a spoon an scoped the meatballs out of the chocolate. The caterer saw it and his eyes looked like dear in headlights. Wouldn’t you know it the snoopy queen behind me also saw everything.
    He said “Why, I have never thought of dipping meatballs into chocolate.” Then proceed to do it too as then did everybody else in the line behind me. OMG LOL LOL. The next year at the same party there was a huge chaffing dish with meatballs covered in chocolate sauce. You just can not make this up!!!

90+ Trees were Murdered in Ybor City by the City of Tampa!!!  
    Friday, Sept 21, 2012.    The tall & lucious trees only crime was providing shade & beauty to historic Ybor City. Many of these trees were 15 years and older.  The trees were located between 6st Ave on the south & 9th Ave on the north and 14th Street on the east & 20th Street on the west.  Attached are photos of 90 trees (we counted others report 100 trees gone) gone and very much missed allready.   To say the community & visiting guests to Ybor are outraged is an understatement.

For those who have missed their Starbuck’s morning kick start we have great news!!! There is now an official Starbouk’s at HCC. Located on the corner of 9th & 15th street inside the newly re molded Cyber Cafe. Great prices and a fun staff. One of the best kept  secrets in Ybor City are the 2 restaurants at HCC. We have these good friends who is almost as crazy as us!  He was a famous antique dealer who when he closed his antique store moved it into this home. Then down sized but didn’t get rid of anything!!!  So when invite to his birthday we couldn’t think of what to get him…. Then it hit us. He was having a fancy Birthday Party at his home so….. We had a head shot of a famous porn star that had just been in the are. We took the photo and autographed it. “To Mike, Thanks for the best sex ever! Next time it’s free! Love, Colt” Then we put it into a Elegant Silver picture frame and during the party left it on the back of the toilet in the guest bathroom. The next day Mike called faking he was upset & said “Only you bitches would do that!!!” We all laugher and the photo is still there years later. LOL LOL. Must have been the best every birthday gift….just say ‘n

“Corpus Christi”, Coming to Tampa
    The Movie & the play, ” Corpus Christi” is coming Fri, Oct 19th to  MCC Tampa. A benefit for MCC & the Metro Wellness and Community Center. Corpus Christi is a passion play by St. Pete born gay playwright Terrence McNally dramatizing the story of Jesus and the Apostles. Written in 1997 and first staged in New York in 1998, it depicts Jesus and the Apostles as gay men living in modern-day Texas. It utilizes modern devices like television with anachronisms like Roman occupation. Judas betrays Jesus because of sexual jealousy. Jesus administers gay marriage between two apostles.

I am writing to you to announce a two-day event coming to Tampa Bay called “Corpus Christi: Playing with Redemption”, on October 19 & 20, 2012.  Please see attached press release for compete details.

Corpus Christi, written by Terrence McNally, is a retelling of the passion story with a Jesus like character portrayed as a gay man growing up in the 1950’s, in Corpus Christi, Texas. It does not set out to blaspheme or put down the bible. It casts Jesus as a man who is at odds with himself, but overcomes those odds and in learning to love himself he is able to love all men, including his enemies.

In a feature documentary, anti-gay religious groups meet “the gay Jesus play.” The film follows the troupe, playwright, and audiences across the U.S. and around the world, on a 5-year journey of Terrence McNally’s passion play, where voices of protest and support collide on one of the central issues facing the LGBT community – religion based bias. Challenging issues of civil rights, marriage equality and separation of church and state, this production has become a remarkable vehicle of positive change for a community struggling to find its voice. Meanwhile, the company of actors finds itself on a journey that would forever change their lives.

Halloween GaYBOR Style
    The Annual All Hallows Ball invites are out and this year 6,000 potential crazy over-the top revelers in costumes will be partying in downtown then heading to GaYBOR/ Ybor City for the outrageous & newly changed Guavaween ” Musical “ event. Florida’s largest Private Gay Party “The All Hallows Ball” is at the Tampa Convention Center coinciding with the Annual Ybor “Gauava” Halloween Night Fest October 27th.. Ybor’s Trolley car passenger exists that night will be ….very whimsical & colorful.
    This year there isn’t a gate cover charge nor will there be a fenced in area or the traditional Mama Guava Parade!  There will be clubs with a multiple wristband entry for $30.00.
     The GaYBOR clubs, restaurants and bars will all be having great “Guava” events. Costume contests, bands, special VJ/DJ’s playing in clubs, and the Ybor streets will be totally bizarre. Definitely a great time to party in GaYBOR/ Ybor City.

    We noticed an ad sent to us about a change with a hotel chain in New Port Richey. It was changing to becoming a new destiny “gay resort.” We didn’t know how to take the pictures that they had sent to us and the”ad”??? The Quality Inn in New Port Ritchy.    In the ad they criticized the old Suncoast Resort Hotel & the Flamingo Hotel in St. Pete!?!?!??    Strategists, economists, political thinkers and researchers are still putting figures together in regards to the RNC economic impact for Tampa Bay last month. It looks like we had very high accolades in friendliness and in hotel stays for August which is usually dismal! But where did they eat at? Speaking of great places to eat, the Laughing Cat Restaurant has started its fall buffet. More variety of fish dishes, salads and other new menu items for the weekday spread. Open 11-2 PM Monday – Friday.

Gay, ND Football & Kissing?
    I went to a college in North Dakota and I really was taken back by the this weeks college football story. First it involves 3 things that I enjoy! Being gay,college football and a good kiss! Well, here goes last weeks event.
    Jamie Kuntz, a gay 18 year old freshman on a football scholarship at ND State College of Sciences in Wahpeton, ND, the border town between ND & Minnesota, was kicked off the college football team.
    He was at the football game but on injured status in Pueblo, Co playing Snow College taping the game for the team. At the end of the game his older boyfriend, who was in the press box with Jamie gave him a kiss. A team member told the coach and what he saw and Kuntz was dismissed from the team. Not for being gay but lying the head coach.
    Kuntz told the coach that he had been kissed by his grandfather which really was his 63 year old lover

Elton John Glasses
    This week two Laughing Cat Restaurants managers came into MC Film and said that they were going to the Elton John Concert. They were excited to see the flashy sparkling glasses in the store and both purchased a pair for that nights concert. Just after midnight the pair were back at MC Film with an over the top story.
    Walking into the newly remodeled million dollar USF Sun Dome they were approached by Elton John’s(Not knowing) promoter in a white suit. The guy said he liked their glasses and would they like to be upgraded for their tickets. To their surprise they were upgraded to front row seats!!!. After one song Elton pointed at the guys glasses & gave them a thumbs up. One of the guys took his glasses off and gave them to Elton John. Then to everybody surprise, Elton pulled out a marker and signed the glasses, then returned them!!!! They were congratulated and envied about there luck all night!

Walking down 7th Ave this morning you knew it was fall. The dry crisp air and the light eastern breeze sent you an uplifting roasting aroma from the Naviera Coffee Co. down the street. A small pleasantry to the mornings. Did you know where ‘Naviera Coffee”name came from? When Carlos Menendez immigrated to Florida from Spain, he named the coffee company he founded in 1921 after the shipping line he came over on. We saw Crowbar co-owner, Bonnie P at her Ybor condo. She had the misfortune of falling and broken her arm 4 different places. Yes, it is painful. She has been out of commission and is being rescued by family, Ybor friends and patrons to cook and take her to therapy twice a week because she can’t drive. The doctors said she will be unavailable to do anything for another 2 months! Keep her in your thoughts.
A small front end loader is working inside the old “Shine Club” on 7th Ave.. Demolition & remodeling is underway as Buffalo Chicken Wings makes plans to open the beginning of November. The new Ybor Youth Clinic on 7th is having its ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Bob Buckhorn this Friday at 4:00, the same time GaYBOR District Coalition is having its monthly meeting next door at the Hampton Inn & Suites.
    Great Kudos to Ybor City’s Hillsborough Community College. President Shawn Robinson said, “The college enrollment was down by 2% but ended in being off in student predicted numbers by 1% this semester.” New business partnership opening in Ybor City above MC FILM is Elliott Wheeler Architect and interior designer, Carla Atkinson Designs. GLBT Participation Soars at Democratic Convention

The Democratic National Convention featured a record number of openly GLBT convention delegates, key speaking roles for out elected officials and the adoption of a party platform supporting marriage equality. “I have certainly never attended a convention where visibility is as significant as it has been at this convention. There is amazing progress to celebrate,” said Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., a candidate for the U.S. Senate who was given a prime time speaking role Thursday night. Other out convention speakers included Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., and Andrew Tobias, treasurer of the Democratic National Committee.
    Local GLBT members attending included Sally Phillips, partner Ercilia Albistu, Marilyn Cappiello, Alan Clendenin, Gayle Morgan, Rick Boylan, Lillian Lewis and Ella Coffee.

Obituary
Ryan M. Fujiki-Hasting,
 34 years old   1978 – 9-8-12,  A loving Father, Husband and Friend! Ryan worked 8 years at Laughing Cat Restaurant in Ybor City.
Ybor City & the Tampa Music Community loss of a Great Person & Musucian.

The Tampa music community suffered a staggering loss on Saturday, September 8th, when Ryan Fujiki-Hastings died in a motorcycle accident in Ybor City, FL. TBO.com reports that Hastings, 34, was traveling north on 15th Street when he lost control of his Harley Davidson. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he died a few hours later. Ryan is survived by his wife, Tanya and their six-month old daughter, Anaïs, along with his extended family and a large community of friends.

Ryan’s most well known contribution to the arts community came through his role as drummer for one of the area’s most promising and enjoyable bands — Candy Bars — whose debut album, On Cutting Ti-Gers in Half and Understanding Narravation, was released by Tampa-based New Granada Records in May 2006. The LP was lauded by the likes of Magnet, Under The Radar, Stereogum and, the inimitable Pitchfork. But of course, Ryan was more, much much more… he struck a lasting chord with so many people. Already remembrances are popping up on the web including Julie Garisto’s remembrance posted on Creative Loafing, another from Thriller Magazine and from Lucas Jensen of Venice is Sinking on their blog.

Please keep the Fujiki-Hastings family in your thoughts through this very difficult time and listen to On Cutting Ti-Gers below or check out a video of Candy Bars playing at New World in August 2010.   OK this is a little naughty But so Funny!!!! ….. Mike a friend of ours back in the 1990’s owned this wonderful home. It was very modern and minimalist decorated. In every room was a huge TV on the wall and cameras were everywhere. Humm… can you say dude dorm??? A mutual friend of ours was Jim. He in his 30’s was/is a very nice guy who still lives with his parents. For work he will do odd jobs for friends. Let’s just say he would believe almost anything. Mike was off to Miami and Jim was watching the house. There was a hurricane coming so we called Jim to make sure he was OK. Jim said Yes everything was OK but something very strange has just happened.
    Jim went on and told us, “You know Mike has a very large DVD porn collection. Well, I found one that I wanted to watch. All the TV’s in the house are run from the closet in the hallway. In the closet I found a TV that would play. So I put the film on and was standing in the hallway enjoying the film when the phone rang. It was Mike & he said “Jim would you like to know how to turn on a big TV?”
    Jim said to us “What a coincident!!!”  We are still laughing!!!!
