NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the 1966 Sip-In at Julius’ Bar Building, one of the most significant sites in New York City’s LGBTQ+ history and an individual landmark, at 155–159 W. 10th St.

Located in the Greenwich Village Historic District, the building was the site of the pivotal 1966 demonstration when activists protested the closure of bars by city and state authorities simply for serving gay patrons. The protest, known as the “Sip-In,” became a defining event in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

LPC designated Julius’ Bar Building as an individual landmark in 2022, and today the site is recognized as an important monument to pre-Stonewall LGBTQ+ rights activism.

BREAKING🚨🏳️‍🌈 Coachella just SOLD OUT its queer fans to MAGA Republicans for $850,000 — and I have the RECEIPTS.

While tens of thousands of queer fans were dancing at Coachella this weekend — wearing rainbows, dancing to queer artists, and trying not to faint when Madonna showed up — Coachella’s billionaire owner Philip Anschutz was writing six-figure checks to anti-LGBTQ politicians and hate groups.

Here’s EXACTLY where your ticket money went:

💸 $250,000 to the Super PAC keeping Republicans in Senate control while they push dozens of anti-LGBTQ clauses into federal spending bills as I type this.

💸 $125,000 to the Republican Governors Association whose governors signed a record number of anti-trans laws last year and are blocking trans healthcare access for kids AND adults across the country.

💸 $100,000 to the Republican Attorneys General Association — the same group that SUED to strip LGBTQ+ student protections in schools, threatened Target for selling Pride merchandise, and helped install Pam Bondi, who spent her entire career as AG waging open war on trans people.

That’s NOT a coincidence.

In 2017, reporting EXPOSED Philip Anschutz’s foundation had donated to the vile ‘Alliance Defending Freedom’ — the group that has literally compared being LGBTQ to Incest — and the Family Research Council, a federally designated hate group. His response? He called it “fake news.” He said he stopped.

He DID NOT stop. He just got quieter about it. Now the checks are even bigger.

Here’s what makes this especially infuriating: the artists on those stages are fighting back!!!

Sabrina Carpenter — the HEADLINER — donates $1 per ticket to the Transgender Law Center and called Trump’s use of her music in ICE arrest videos “evil and disgusting.” Karol G spoke out about her Latino community being terrorized. These artists are doing the right thing. Then the profits go upstairs to a man who funds the machine terrorizing those same communities.

This is where the money goes. EVERY. YEAR.

I’m not here to shame anyone who went. Joy is resistance. Community matters. But we deserve to make decisions with our eyes open not under a fog of marketing designed to make us feel safe while the owner bankrolls our oppression.

So what do we do? We make it expensive to play both sides. We track the donations. We name the donors. We pressure the artists and sponsors to demand accountability. We make “Coachella” synonymous with corporate betrayal until Anschutz stops writing homophobic checks or stops pretending his festival is a “safe space” for us.
