FEATURE SPECIAL STORY : Ybor Lore & Ghost Stories 2011

Talking with people about the historic Ybor City District reveals more and more ghost tales. Most recently, 3 weeks ago in fact at JJ’s Cafe, we met up with former proprietor of the Lower Red Bar on 16th Street, Annie. Annie was with her boyfriend, Jay and one thing led to another. We made mention of the infamous Ybor gangsters and murdered gambling profiteer, Charlie Wall. “This was one of his hangouts we understood.” I said. A ghostly trail of many lore and characters and who knows what in the earlier days of Ybor City. Gambling, prostitution, ethnic turf wars and bootlegging! Well, Ybor City is more than diverse!

What a crazy fun, unbelievably day we had at MC Film. We had been talking on line with Bryan from www.TampaChanging.com about the history of the building MC Film is located in. The building was the former home to “King Greco Hardware”. It was Tampa Mayor Dick Greco’s parents store.  Into our store walked Bryan with this photo he had found at the Tampa History Museum in a store about the 1921 hurricane!  We had a great visit about the history in Ybor City. If any of you have any old photos please contact Bryan at Bryan@TampaChaning.com. Shortly after Bryan lest our good friend & owner of the building Diana stopped by. She had not seen the photos & was excited too.  Now your not going to believe this but…. 2 Hours later a lady, her brother & 2 kids all came into MC Film.  She told me that she was from North Carolina & her great grandfather had a hardware store here. We said “WOW so your a Greco?” She said “No, we are the King family who sold our store to the Greco’s!”  What unbelievable timing it this!!! Now squint your eyes and look at the sign above the door at the very top next to the roof…. The Pride of Ybor City! Hummmm  so looks like there has always been PRIDE in this store. Today it’s LGBT PRIDE!!!
