Deborah Cox to Perform at St. Pete Pride!

On June 30, 2012 St. Pete Pride will celebrate its 10th Anniversary in the Grand Central District of St. Petersburg, Fla. The event which started in 2003 has grown to become the largest Pride Celebration in the state and one of the largest in the country.

This year’s event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the streets of St. Petersburg between 21st and 28th streets along Central Avenue. Two stages will present live entertainment all day with a variety of musicians, vocalists, drag performers and deejays from around the region.

Headlining this year’s event will be the multi-platinum selling and a multi-talented entertainer, Deborah Cox. “We are overjoyed to have Ms. Cox at St. Pete Pride this year,” said Executive Director Chris Rudisill. “Her on-stage energy and beautiful presence will only highlight our 10th anniversary celebration this year.”

Cox has earned three Juno Awards, conquered the R&B and pop charts, including six top-20 Billboard R&B singles, an impressive ten #1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart and the lead role in Elton John and Tim Rice’s Broadway musical, Aida. Deborah will be returning to Broadway in 2012 where she will portray the legendary Josephine Baker in Josephine.

While singing with Celine Dion, Cox was discovered by the infamous Clive Davis and instantly signed to Arista Records. Her platinum selling debut album Deborah Cox was released in 1995 and garnered her first JUNO award for Best R&B Soul Recording.  In 1998 she followed up with the release of her second CD One Wish.  From this CD came the double platinum “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here” which held the record for being the longest running #1 R&B Single for 14 consecutive weeks. She earned her third JUNO, a Lady of Soul and a Soul Train Award. Her second single “We Can’t Be Friends” also went to #1 on Billboard’s singles chart and sold over 500,000 copies. “Things Just Ain’t The Same” and “It’s Over Now” followed.  In 2000 Deborah recorded the duet “Same Script Different Cast” with Whitney Houston. The Morning After was released in 2002 with “Up & Down (In & Out)” co-written with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
In addition to roles in both film and television, Deborah also released a Grammy Award nominated tribute album to the legendary Dinah Washington in 2007 (Universal) as well as an independent R&B album release of The Promise (Deco Recording Group) in 2008 where she earned her 10th #1 spot on the Billboard Dance Chart with the international hit “Beautiful U R”. Behind the scenes, Deborah has recorded singles for several film soundtracks including Akeelah and the Bee, Hotel Rwanda, Kingdom Come, Money Talks, A Good Man is Hard To Find and most recently Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns.”

In 2010 Deborah was invited by Andrea Bocelli to sing three duets with him at the O2 in London. She also Toured with David Foster on his Foster & Friends Tour.

Deborah Cox will headline the Jagermeister PLAY 98.7 Main Stage located near the corner 21st Street and Central Avenue during the Pride festival. St. Pete Pride is expected to draw an estimated 90,000-100,000 people this year and has a plethora of events occurring throughout the month of June leading up to the official St. Pete Pride Street Festival & Promenade.

Top Under Rated Gay City Destinations… So Get Ready To Explore!

by About.com columnist Andrew Collins

Cities like Detroit and Sacramento may not register as high on your gaydar as Boston or San Francisco, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have plenty to offer gay travelers. Many of us end up passing through smaller or less glamorous cities, perhaps on business, visiting friends or relatives, or enjoying a quick weekend getaway. It’s always a pleasant surprise to discover that a destination you had modest hopes for fosters a vibrant gay social scene. Here are some of my favorite underrated cities.

Ohio’s largest city has two of the components that make for a great gay scene: it has a major collegiate presence (Ohio State University), and it’s a center of government (being the state capital). An extremely high number of gays and lesbians live here, and enjoy its lively downtown neighborhoods (such as the gay-popular Short North and German Village areas). Columbus has one of the Midwest’s best culinary reputations, a high number of art galleries, numerous gay sports clubs, and a youthful but unpretentious gay club scene. What more could a worldly traveler ask for?

2. Albuquerque, New Mexico

Sometimes unfairly dismissed as a mere gateway to Santa Fe and Taos, the nation’s hot-air ballooning capital has enough going for it to merit at least a three-day visit. Many lesbians and gay men call the “Duke City” home. You can explore up-and-coming downtown’s and historic Old Town’s galleries and museums, Nob Hill and Route 66’s trendy restaurants and handful of gay clubs, and the dramatic, 10,600-foot Sandia Mountains that fringe town – visit them via the aerial tramway (the world’s longest). Best of all, hotel rates here are about half what you’ll pay in Santa Fe, and Albuquerque has several gay-friendly B&Bs.

3. Providence, Rhode Island

Just 45 minutes from Boston and one of the largest cities in America with an openly gay mayor, Providence has long been a tolerant, erudite, and progressive community. Artsy, left-leaning colleges like Brown, Rhode Island School of Design, and Johnson & Wales bring in a steady stream of gay students and academics. Superb restaurants, a vibrant Little Italy, restored historic neighborhoods, and a moderate cost of living (by Northeastern standards) are further draws to Rhode Island’s state capital. Providence is also the only city in New England with any gay bathhouses, which makes it something of a draw for guys on the make.

4. Kansas City, Missouri

Near the nation’s geographic center, Kansas City is nevertheless often overlooked by gay and lesbian travelers. It’s a shame, because this surprisingly hilly and leafy metropolis on the Missouri River possesses considerable charms, and although the gay scene is comparatively discreet, it’s still active and sizable. K.C. has plenty of gay-friendly bars and eateries, plus a super snazzy retail and dining district, Country Club Plaza, famous for its elaborate Spanish-style architecture. First-rate art museums, a respectable theater scene, and mouthwatering barbecue offer further enticements to come and stay for a while.

5. Salt Lake City, Utah

Nestled in the shadows of the spectacular Wasatch Mountains, which offer some of the world’s best skiing as well as the annual (and very gay) Sundance Film Festival (held in nearby Park City), Salt Lake City has a conservative reputation owing to its Mormon heritage and Utah’s decidedly red-state status. But Salt Lake is an eclectic city with plenty of outdoorsy, environmentally minded, socially liberal residents, and the handful of gay nightclubs here are wildly fun, much to the surprise of first-time visitors. There are several gay-friendly B&Bs in town as well as the gay-popular Hotel Monaco.

6. Indianapolis, Indiana

America’s 13th-largest city, Indianapolis has experienced ups and downs over the past half-century, but it’s definitely in an “up” mood of late, with ambitious redevelopments of downtown neighborhoods; outstanding museums, theaters, and sports venues; and an increasingly visible gay and lesbian community. A beautiful canal-walk along the White River extends from downtown and passes by several notable museums, and the gay-popular Mass Ave Arts District abounds with cool places to eat and drink. You can cycle along a scenic bike trail north from Mass Ave Arts to the city’s hip Broad Ripple River neighborhood, where you’ll find another hotbed of great dining and entertainment. The city’s gay nightlife scene is friendly and diverse, too.

7. New Haven, Connecticut

Famous for Yale University, New Haven has enjoyed one of the Northeast’s most stunning renaissances in recent years, following decades of urban ills. It’s the most liberal city in a state that recently legalized same-sex civil unions, and gays make up a big chunk of the social fabric here. Yale operates some outstanding museums, and the surrounding neighborhood has a dynamic, eclectic retail and dining scene that you’d expect of a much larger city. Theater buffs watch top-notch plays and musicals at the city’s three highly respected performing arts venues. Did we mention Jodie Foster and Larry Kramer are Yale alums?

8. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

With a hilly, scenic setting at the confluence of three major rivers, the Steel City has gradually shed its image as a gruff blue-collar town, as new high-tech industries have moved in, and fans of arts and culture have become more familiar with such attractions as the fabulous Andy Warhol Museum, the provocative Mattress Factory modern art museum, and many museums associated with Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh. The U.S. version of the TV show Queer As Folk was set in Pittsburgh (although filmed in Toronto), which has helped increase the city’s queer visibility.

California’s state capital is as desirable for what it’s near as for what it is – within a two-hour drive are San Francisco, Tahoe, Napa and Sonoma, and Yosemite National Park. But this laid-back, attractive river city has its own charms as well, including a dynamic downtown shaded by leafy trees and packed with historic Victorian and Arts and Crafts homes, not to mention a number of stellar restaurants and convivial, gay-popular coffeehouses. Sacramento also has a handful of gay bars and gay-owned accommodations, making it a friendly, relaxed alternative to some of California’s bigger and pricier urban destinations.

10. Detroit, Michigan

One of America’s largest cities, Detroit hardly lacks name recognition. Unfortunately, since the decline of the auto industry and the urban exodus of the mid-20th-century, Motor City has battled with image problems. The highly pronounced gay population here lives and plays mostly in the nearby towns of Ferndale and Royal Oak, but downtown Detroit itself has among the nation’s most vaunted cultural treasures: historic theaters and performance halls, the estimable Detroit Institute of the Arts, and such outlying attractions as the Henry Ford Museum and Cranbrook Art Museum. This is a city whose star is rising.

11. Fort Worth, Texas

Nearby Dallas may have more gay bars and a ritzier reputation, but this self-proclaimed Cow Town of about 500,000 people has the far more impressive cultural heritage, including such renowned institutions as the Kimbell Art Museum, Amon Carter Museum, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and Bass Performance Hall. The city also has a number of first-rate restaurants, the infectiously fun if honky-tonk Stockyards district, and a handful of down-home friendly gay bars. And the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame has developed something of a lesbian following since it opened in 2002.

GET YOURS & OUR Message Heard……
GetEQUALFL.org
My brothers and sisters in peace–
As you may have heard, following momentum created around the Executive Order–which would prohibit companies that do business with the government from discriminating against their employees based on sexual orientation or gender identity–Obama Administration staffers hurriedly called a meeting of several LGBT organizations about the Executive Order… only to tell those groups that the President wouldn’t sign the Executive Order.
Since then, GetEQUAL organizers across the country have been participating in inspiring actions at Obama for America campaign offices, asking campaign staff and volunteers to ask President Obama to stand up for workplace fairness. As Heather, GetEQUAL’s managing director, so perfectly stated in her previous e-mail, “This is about President Obama keeping promises to the LGBT community, and taking action whenever and wherever he can to make LGBT Americans more equal. This is about whether the President will stand up for workplace fairness, rather than political maneuvering. This is about whether the President will embrace full dignity and humanity for LGBT Americans, rather than clinging to the outdated mindset that standing up for equality is a political liability.”
So, as part of our efforts in Florida to keep the pressure on and make sure our voice is loud and clear…
Film a short video of yourself (ideally under three minutes) asking the President to sign the Executive Order and explaining why we just cannot afford to wait. Feel free to keep it simple or get as creative as you’d like! As long as it’s from the heart, it’s right. Once your video is all done, you can upload it by visitinghttp://www.dropitto.me/getequalfl and entering the password “equality.” Encourage family and friends to do the same. I’ll then compile the videos onto our page/website. Our message is clear: we can’t wait!
Keep an eye out for another e-mail on some on-the-ground action planning we’ll be doing. Thank you so much for being a force for equality; I am looking forward to seeing all of your videos!
Onward!
In peace and solidarity,
Caterina Victoria

Road trip to Lakeland
A short 30 minutes east of Tampa is Lakeland. On a Monday afternoon we didn’t expect much but WOW were we wrong! Our first stop was a late lunch early dinner at The Texas Longhorn just off the Florida Ave exit on I-4. 6 tables of blue hairs and 3 tables of Gays. Of course we knew the Gay guys LOL. Next we were eager to check out Karma Bar & Lounge https://www.facebook.com/KarmaBarAndLounge . Located inside the Regal Grand Hotel on Memorial Blvd. This club is full of great surprises inside! We were greeted by new owner Jay and given a full tour. The club is located just off the private outside pool and adjacent to a very large convention room that has a gigantic stage perfect for pageants!  The club has an upbeat atmosphere and great energy. At 5 in the afternoon on a Monday there was actually DJ Travis spinning!!! Rooms start at just $39.00!!! So why drink & drive??? No trip to Lakeland is complete without paying homage to the Green Parrot now called Pulse Lakeland https://www.facebook.com/lakeland.pulse Quick history lesson here…. The Green Parrot is the 2nd oldest Gay Bar in Florida, the oldest Gay Bar in Florida is the KIKIKI but it has moved 3 times. The Oldest Gay bar in the same location with the same name is The Pro Shop in Clearwater.
Anyway it is always a treat to stop at Pulse Lakeland. We were greeted by Bartenders Extraordinare  Dustin & Shaelah and friend Matt. With very little cooing we got Dustin & Matt to show off their new UNICO Underwear. Which they purchased from MC Film.  Hmmm… I wonder where the suggestion for road trip came from LOL???? The club was sparkling clean. The Lounge area, stage & outdoor patio had all been updated. With a great staff & club house feel it’s easy to why Pulse is so very popular. Both stops told us we should also check out the Tuesday GLBT Night at Alligator Alley. If your looking for fun friendly people we suggest you definitely check out Lakeland. On our next trip we will try staying at the Regal Grand.

Tampa Moves Ahead with Domestic Partnership
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn with Tampa City Councilwoman Yvonne “Yolie” Capin, who introduced the ordinance to Tampa City Council members 6 weeks ago, watched the signing of this historic Tampa Domestic Partnership  Registry Ordinance legislation into Tampa law. Mayor Buckhorn, in his chambers, signed with several pens. After the signing the first pen was given to Carrie West, President of the GaYBOR District Coalition. Before the signing Carrie joked with the staff and tried to change the pen to a bright pink GaYBOR District pen. ” This goes right to heart of who we are as a community and how we treat people.” Mayor Buckhorn commented. “For me this is a great chance to level the playing field for a lot of folks who are in relationships that may not look like my marriage, but should be treated accordingly.” added Mayor Buckhorn  to the crowded room packed with media representatives. He also added that this is a great discussion point when talking to the companies that want to relocate to Tampa.
Carrie West commented, “ This isn’t a gay or straight issue. It is an equality and fairness community ordinance benefiting all of Tampa’s residents. Now, lets have the Hillsborough County Commissioners take note!”
Also present for the signing were Rich Kerin, treasurer of GaYBOR, Mark Bias co- secretary of GaYBOR and 3 representatives from Equality Florida, Ed Lally, Phil Dinkins & Brian Winfield. After the signing the Mayor & Tampa City Council members were off for a meeting with President Obama at the Port of Tampa.  Tampa is now one of many other cities including most recently Orlando, Gainesville, Ft Lauderdale, Miami and Key West that have the Domestic Partnership law on their books!
That same day at 4PM Councilwoman Yvonne “Yolie” Capin was the guest speaker at the GaYBOR District Coalition monthly meeting.

Councilwoman Yvonne “Yolie” Capin , Guest @ GaYBOR Meeting
A lot of new business members, members and local friends came to Bradley’s on 7th for the monthly GaYBOR District Coalition meeting. The guest speaker was Tampa City Councilwoman Yvonne “Yolie” Capin who had a very busy day by being with Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn earlier to sign into law the Tampa Domestic Partner Registry ordinance, had lunch and a meeting with President Barack Obama at the Port of Tampa and then onto the GaYBOR meeting all in the 6 hour window!
‘I felt that it was a right thing to do.” Yolie said. ” I wasn’t approached by any organization or individuals about this Domestic Partner Registry issue. I just said to myself that this would be a great legacy for my grandson who was born February 29th!” Thank You Tampa City Councilwoman Yvonne “Yolie” Capin for living by your conscience!
Upcoming agenda and events in historic Ybor City included: new GaYBOR maps 10,000 given out in 6 weeks, GaYBOR Days events will be held during Memorial Day Weekend this year, Orlando Gay Days June  1-4th and St. Pete Pride coming June 30th. The group Welcomed 12 new businesses to GDC.

Big Ybor City Welcome to President Obama
We are sure that President Obama did not miss the HUGE Flag flying over Ybor City during his recent visit to the Port of Tampa. The State of Florida re-election campaign headquarters will again be located in Ybor City.  Humm, So the Obama flag will be flying high over the Republican Safe Zone during the convention????  This is going to be great!
Will the REAL Cuban Sandwich Please Stand Up!
It seems that there is a real feud going on about who made the first “cubano” or “Cuban Sandwich?” Miami claims that the honor goes to them while of course Ybor City brags that no!  We made it first and even  ‘named it!” In fact it was so original the name could have been “the Cigar Workers Sandwich.” It was said that the diversity of the community, both Cuban immigrants and newly settled Italians that came to be cigar rolling workers created this great ‘mixto’ sandwich’ masterpiece.
Of course it has to be on fresh crisp Cuban bread, then a layer of glazed ham, next layer mojo cooked roast pork, a layer of Genoa salami with Swiss cheese, pickles and a smear  spread  of yellow mustard. Mayo was omitted and would have spoiled back then! Put in a press and that is an “Original Turn of the Century Ybor City Cuban Sandwich”! Added later years were tomatoes and lettuce.
Miami has the base right. Cuban bread, roast pork, ham, a question on which cheese to use, pickles and yes yellow mustard!  What luck the Latino Times is having a competition to see which “cubano” is better in the upcoming Cuban Sandwich Festival, May 26th. in Tampa.
In any event we know that artist and creator of the Cuban Sandwich Show, David Audett, will artfully mastermind the famous Cuban Sandwich Show  and will be there!

Miss REAL Trailer Trash
The most unusual Miss Trailer Trash Drag Pageant was held at Gaspar’s Grotto with a fair number of well, … very specially adorned eye catching characters! The charity event proceeds went to Metro Wellness & Community Center. Contestants had people rolling or slipping off their seats. Many couldn’t enter because they didn’t qualify for not having any teeth. There was a 1 tooth minimum we heard to enter! The emcee was Miss Melanie Minyon (when she wasn’t barking at passerby’s from the middle of the street) who introduced the colorful contestants and was helped by the Tampa Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. It was a blast and congratulations for having a fun afternoon event. The Airstream trailer sponsored by Sailor Jerry Rum offered goodies and games.

2 New Gay Clubs in GaYBOR/Ybor City
Over  the past couple of months two new LGBT Clubs have opened in GaYBOR both raising the entertainment bars to new levels!!!
The GaYBOR T-Dance at Barbarella’s is now 1 month old and packing them in every Sunday. This “One of A Kind” Club has fun indoor and outdoor bars the upstairs is a huge roof top open air club. Every Sunday there are fantastic DJ’s, Hunky Dancers, Drag Queens, Celebrity Hosts/ Entertainers and sun worshipping dancers. It is sooo much fun in the sun! Directly behind the club is FREE Sunday Parking in the  1/2 block city lot!!! The doors open at 5 PM every Sunday with Great Drink prices.
Liquid Tampa should have been called the ever changing experiencing bar. Opening daily at 4 PM it is a fun neighborhood Happy Hour with a most interesting view of 7th Ave. As the sun sets the Hot men come out & loose their clothes. Manny of these guys also bare it all at “The Men of Liquid @ SKIN” once a month. The all star cast of DJ’s reads as the Who’s Who in the music world. On Fri, Sat & Sunday Nights there are Special Event Parties that have been WOW!!!  Toss in Drag Queens, Club Kids & Local celebrities with a mixture of all ages and you have a Great Time!!!
Add these two new clubs together with the 9 others already open in GaYBOR/Ybor City and suddenly the Ybor City City slogan takes on a whole new mean. “Flavored to suit any Taste.” & “Taste the may Flavors of Ybor City.”
R-Bar Opens in GaYBOR/Ybor City
The owners of the Row Boat Mediterranean Cusine on the corner of 8th ave & 15th street have opened next door “The R- Bar”. The bar is divided into two sections. In the font is a long welcoming full liquor main bar. Thru the large arch into the back section where there are small intimate tables and a fun stage area that will be hosting bands and entertainers.  On many nights in the adjoining Row Boat Restaurant there are exotic belly dancers. We are sure they will have a lot of samba and creativity with the new stage.
$2 Shot & Beer Specials nightly the R-Bar will hoppin!

Retailer and Cigar Connoisseur… Don Barco
Don Barco is the owner of “King Corona Cigars” in Ybor City. He was also a founding member of the GaYBOR District Coalition! King Corona is our favorite place for Cuban cafe’ con leche’ & town gossip! Don and his wife, Brenda had a small cigar shop in the old Ybor Square Cigar Factory for many years before moving to the 7th Ave shop. Involved in all Ybor City boards and local city politics, most all political candidates have a forum or event at King Corona. Many of our small GaYBOR meetings are also held here in this friendly welcoming environment. With a large outside cafe patio, you can enjoy people watching while in the great outdoors. When the Hillsborough County Commissioners did not sign the GaYBOR Proclamation, Don was one of the first to stand up and say that’s not right!
As board member Richard said, ” I just love Don! He is a Straight, Gay Freedom Fighter!!” Stop by King Corona today for a sandwich, lunch, fine handmade cigar, variety of coffees, assorted fine wines, unique books & a good time!!!
