Gary Mormino to Discuss the history of Tampa Food during Ybor City Event
Gary Mormino, a founder of the Florida Studies Program at USF St. Petersburg, will participate in a panel discussion on the history of Tampa food Saturday, Aug. 11 in Ybor City as part of the Cuban Sandwich Show.
Mormino, the Frank E.Duckwall Professor of History, will discuss change and continuity in Tampa food. He will be joined by E.J.Salcines, retired judge of the Second District Court of Appeal and local historian; Andrew Huse, author of the history of the Columbia Restaurant and an instructor in the USF Honors Program; Tampa City Council member Yvonne Yolie Capin, who led efforts to declare the Cuban sandwich the historical sandwich of Tampa; and Michelle Faedo, whose Cuban sandwiches and devil crabs are considered among the best in the city. Tom Scherberger, director of communications at USFSP and a former food writer for theTampa Bay Times, will moderate.
The panel discussion is a centerpiece of a day devoted to Tampa cuisine, including a 1:30 p.m. screening and panel discussionof “Living in America – 100 years of Ybor, and a 3:30 performance of “I am a Cuban Sanwich by Richard DePietra. All events arefree and open to the public.
“We are excited to have a distinguished panel to discuss a topic that has been in the news lately – Tampa food and how it hasevolved,’’ said David Audet, the organizer of the Cuban Sandwich Show, which is a creation of the Artists and Writers Group, Inc.
The 10 a.m. panel discussion will be at the Main Stage Theater at the Ybor City Campus of Hillsborough Community College. It will be preceded by Cuban coffee and pastries in the lobby of the theater from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The theater is at 2204 N. 15 th Street (corner of Palm Avenue and North 14th Street).
The Cuban Sandwich Show: All Art, All Tampa features myriad events and runs through Aug. 23.

THE SHOWCASE REPERTORY COMPANY TO PERFORM ORIGINAL COMEDY,
“DINNER FOR SIX” – a play in two acts
On August 16-17, 2012, ShowcaseArtsFoundation, Inc. (SAFI) will present an original play, Dinner for Six, at the Stageworks Theatre in Tampa. An additional performance will be August 18, 2012 at the SAFI Theater in Clearwater, which will be a dinner show.
Cost for Stageworks performances will be $10 with show time at 8 p.m. and doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Cost for the dinner show at SAFI will be $20 advance, $25 at the door with dinner at 7 p.m. and show time at 8 p.m. (Ticket price includes dinner and one complimentary glass of wine.) Dinner for Six is written and directed by Lil Barcaski, President and Founding Member of SAFI. Lil has written several full-length and one-act plays and is a member of StageWrights, the play-writing arm of the Stage Works Theater.

As the result of too much wine at a dinner party, a group of friends decide to produce a play that two of them saw while on a trip to New York with their high school drama club twenty five years earlier. The play had a profound impact on them and in their memories was “the greatest play ever”. Once they are knee-deep in the commitment to do the play, they realize that their perceptions as teens may have been a bit off. To add even more twists, the young man they hire to fill the lead role will change their lives forever.
Dinner for Six will take you on a journey of friendships and laughter. Don’t miss this hilarious, twisted comedy that explores sexual identity and the parameters of relationships.
ShowcaseArtsFoundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit ensemble theater company located in Clearwater, Florida. Troupes perform throughout the Tampa Bay area. SAFI cultivates awareness of the arts in the community, including theater, dramatic and comedic improv, film, and writing.

TEMPUS PROJECTS invites you to submit artwork for consideration in an upcoming exhibition The Elephant in the Room to be held at Creative Loafing in Tampa, Florida during the RNC. This exhibition is scheduled to open on Friday August 24, 2012 and run through August 31, 2012. Reception time and date TBA.
ENTRY DETAILS
ELIGIBILITY – The call for submissions is open to all artists, working in any media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, performance, video, film, audio and digital/graphic art are eligible for review. All works must be politically themed.
SUBMISSION FORMAT –
Email Submissions – All images should be submitted digitally to tempusprojects.art@gmail.com with a submission form. Entry fees should be sent via Pay Pal to the same email address. To ensure that your submission is sorted properly and reviewed please included “ELEPHANT / your name” in the subject line of the email. The submission deadline for images and submissions fees is: Monday August 13, 2012 6:00 PM.
NOTIFICATION – Artists will be notified of acceptance or decline no later than Wednesday August 15, 2012. Notification will be made via e-mail. Accepted works must be received by Monday August 20, 2012. Accepted artists will be contacted with details for art work delivery.
COMMISSION – There will be a 40% commission on any sales made during this exhibition or from the TEMPUS PROJECTS website.
ENTRY FEE – There is non-refundable $10 entry fee for three digital image files; $5 for each additional file. Submit as many works as you wish. Send your submission fee via pay-pal to tempusprojects.art@gmail.com.
