THANK YOU!!!! Mark & Carrie VOTED as St. Pete Pride Promenade Grand Marshals

A great crowd went to the Bert Smith BMW car dealership to find out who was going to be this years 2013 St Pete Pride Promenade Grand Marshals set for Saturday, June 29th in St. Pete. This is the largest Gay Pride event in Florida and the line up for Grand Marshals was fierce. The food furnished by Orange Blossom Caters was delish! The conversations with friends was “Dishy.”
This year the St Pete Pride group headed by newly appointed Executive Director, Eric Skains set up a friendly voting competition in 3 categories; Female, Male and Organizations.
Dishing’s Mark & Carrie just want to Thank all those who voted for us as the St Pete Pride Male Grand Marshal winners. Others included Michael Keeffe and Steve Blanchard of Watermark.
Women Nominees were TIGLFF’s Renee Cossette, Sharon Herman and winning vote count went to Susan McGrath.
Organization nominees were AIDS Service Association of Pinellas, PFLAG of Tampa and winner was Metro Wellness and Community Centers.
Carrie remarked and recalled to the audience the beginnings and formation of St Pete Pride.
” A meeting was set up to have Tampa Pride leaders talk to St. Pete business leaders in March to help in a financial crisis and was held at Grand Central Station on Central Ave. About 20 people were there to hear a proposal. Along with us, Mark & Carrie was Judy B. Goode, Kris & Jim from Grand Central, Dan Fiorini, Brian Longstreth and brother Jim, owners of Pig Boy Leather, Balls of Steel, Mgr Glenn & Joan from Suncoast Resort, Ed Gonzalez from Georgie’s Alibi, Carl Kuttler III, Jay Allar & Chip plus a few others.”
It was decided that St. Pete GLBT leaders could start there own Pride since a lot of the Tampa Bay GLBT momentum was now in St. Pete.

Jinkx Monsoon, Not Fooled!

A star is a star! The antics of Jinkx Monsoon made her (or him) a celebrity and a star. Jinkx is the winner of season 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Hundreds of area fans wanted to meet and have their pictures taken with the new limelight Sunday at Hamburger Mary’s Ybor City. If there was time another sold out show would have been in the cards. Two scheduled shows were both sold out to the wall! Jinkx was dynamic, personable, inviting, yet inquisitively movie star charmed.
Jinkx Monsoon is Jerick Hoffer under the guise. Jerick has a theater degree from the northwest Cornish College in Seattle. Performing and singing live, the long lashed blonde bombshell belted out fabulous music and delivered a sober message. “I pay taxes, the government takes my money and I believe every state should have equality and have same sex marriages just like Washington State has. They also have something more that passed.” she quipped referring to the passage of legalizing marihuana also in Washington.
Also starring and warming up the large audience for Jinkz was weekly performing Hamburger Mary’s stars Stephanie Shippae, Summer Alexander, Jocelyn Summers and Divinity Everlasting.
Jinkx is going to be a very well known name in the GLBT plus community! We hope to see you in a return visit to GaYBOR/ Historic Ybor City.

Outing and Adventures

On the banks of Tampa Bay beaches on Davis Islands the GLBT group headed by travel guru, Robert Geller, Outings & Adventures (O&A) had a paddle surfing session Sunday morning. This is one of many diverse activities the Tampa Bay group initiates and particpates. The group was taught basics of standing and paddle boarding with test runs. Then the group headed around the Davis Islands exploring and challenging their own wits. A great adventurous group to meet up and try new things.
The group have gone horseback riding, traveled to Costa Rica, deep sea dived and have occasional cooking sessions at different cooking schools. Hundreds of planned activities for GLBT and friends community

Broken Tusk

It is always fun for us to visit St. Petersburg. We asked on facebook what is must see newest in St. Pete. Several people told us to visit the Broken Tusk located at 4685 28th St. N in St. Pete. We love clubs that are Proud to be Gay & the Broken Tusk is definitely one of those. We heard it is a GLBT and stressed the T part establishmnet.
There is a large outside patio with fresh luscious tropical plants. Inside you will find a fun & friendly staff. They even have the Rainbow flag hanging correctly!!! (one of our pet peaves LOL) We had just missed owner Levi and Judah Love the General mgrs. With Music, Pool, Darts & friendly people this is one place you must check out. We suggest you become their facebook friends today so you don’t miss anything!

Disappointing Mural

The art work was very good but the message was confusing & disapointing. There was so much talk about the Adamo Drive Mural Project on Adamo Drive in south Ybor City. It was said over & over again that the mural would celebrate the History & Diversity of Ybor City past, present & future. GaYBOR was asked to help get the message out about the rusted buildings beautification project.   GaYBOR had mural leaders speak and give input to the local mural. Surveys, money and volunteerism input! So we were happy to look forward to a more diverse promising historic Ybor beautification! With that being said, there is NOTHING Gay, Lesbian or even Drag on this mural. And that was a very important part of Ybor’s past and present.
On the corner of 7th Ave & 15th Street there is an official Historical marker which talks about Teddy Roosevelt & his Gay horsemen. In the 80’s it was common to find former Tampa Mayor Dick Greco entertaining government & state VIP’s at the El Goya Night Club Drag Shows. In 2007, the year GaYBOR started, there were 44 empty store fronts on 7th Ave. alone and was not very pretty! Today thanks to the help of the LGBTA community, Ybor City is once again coming back alive with new life, high safety standards and a Tampa Bay destination for visitors and tourists.
As a proud open LGBT person this mural doesn’t represent anything from our community. All we asked for was a little something. Sometimes it is very difficult to tolerate close minded people. Especially the ones wearing horse eye blinders. With out the formation of the GaYBOR District Coalition there would have been no mural.
