GaYBOR Mayor’s Luncheon
The “State of GaYBOR” in Historic Ybor City is very high spirited and upbeat. The enthusiasm and direction that GaYBOR District Coalition’s 6 year history has, is truly remarkable and unprecedented. A whole new slate of officers under new president, Mark Eary are carrying on GaYBOR District’s traditions and adding new endeavors.
Thursday, 11:30 at Hamburger Mary’s in Centro Ybor, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn will dine amongst the coalitions membership at the semi casual informative luncheon. What the friendly GLBT Tampa mayor will speak about will definitely be heard across the Tampa Bay waters. Tickets are limited and still available.
“GaYBOR at the start has always had a great relationship with the Tampa mayors office and downtown leadership.” said Carrie West, now President Emeritus of the organization. “Tampa’s Mayor Bob will be speaking at the Annual GaYBOR Luncheon Thursday morning and will be in the St. Pete Pride Parade! What more can you say about our Tampa Bay Mayor?”
Mayor Bob Buckhorn was asked to attend and participate in the parade by St Pete Pride planning officials. He accepted their invitation making him the highest official to be in the 11 year old GLBT Pride event. A part of the cross the bay decision was do to the positive economic growth and development of Tampa’s GLBT’s GaYBOR District Coalition in Historic Ybor City. Mark & Carrie, officers of GaYBOR District are this years 2013 St Pete Pride Grand Marshals.
Luncheon Tickets are available at Hamburger Mary’s,Ybor City Wine Bar and MC FILM.

Holiday Spirit in Historic Ybor City

Large and small events are planned fund raisers to help put on one of Tampa’s best and Festive events, Holiday Spirit in Historic Ybor City Parade. A full month of planned November and Christmas holiday events include the lighting of the 40′ Christmas Tree Lighting in Centro Ybor, decorating up 7th Ave, GaYBOR Holiday Decorating Contest and the blocks long snow falling Holiday Spirit Parade along 7th Ave which is always a Miracle on 7th!
Last year over 40,000 attended the new tradition parade.
Small dinners and other events are being held around Tampa with the proceeds going towards the holiday parade spectacular. Sunday, Mathieu and crew had a Polynesian Dinner with 30 guests over looking 7th Ave enjoying Polly Punches and wine. Starting out with homemade Pot Sticker appetizers and home brewed Sangria then onto a great prepared island dinner feast of pineapple/ pork shish kabobs over jasmine rice.
More charitable themed dinner engagements are in the works. All the donations help out the expenses in putting on the holiday event.

People R Talking, 7-11 to Opening in GaYBOR

Hillsborough County has just gone through its own NYC Stonewall of sorts with the rescinding of the Hillsborough County ban on Gay Pride in the county. Now it is PRIDE Week throughout Tampa Bay and word is that another try for Domestic Partner Registry is being planned on the Commissioners docket for August. All would not be applicable if the DOMA and Prop 8 comes down from the U.S. Supreme Court this week in our favor.
A great singing star and first in late night TV infomercial’s was born right here in Tampa. Otis Dewey ‘Slim’ Whitman, Jr.  He was a regular music playing celebrity on local Tampa  TV early morning shows. A man with a yodel in his throat and a song in his heart, passed away this week at age 90. He sold more albums than the Beatles and toured in the 1950’s with Elvis Presley. An entertainer & music icon!
A new 7-11 Convenience Store is in the works to take over La Ultramar Building, the old jewelry store at 7th Ave. and 16th St. in Ybor City. Not all residents are pleased with the corporate’s store move to the historic district. Parking changes, permitting, beer sales all affect local Ybor business. The new concept urban stores are more aimed at the inner city market place with fresh produce, meat and fruit then the classic style 7-11 stores with gas pumps. Hey did you notice the new steel canopy that was built over the Prana Night Club entrance? The 4th of July looks like it will be a big firecracker of events with top name entertainment performing at many clubs and restaurants in GaYBOR.
We hear that a new restaurant (NOT Hamburger Mary’s) and a dance studio are moving into the old Detours Bar on Central Ave. A new parade route had been talked about for St. Pete PRIDE this year. Glad it was voted down!!!

Carne’s Chop House Jazz Brunch

Continuing on the Sunday Ybor City tradition is Carne’s Chop House Jazz Sunday Brunch. Tampa jazz band tradition played to the packed house of customers in the historic chophouse building setting. Different themed Sunday Brunches are planned all summer at the Carne’s Chophouse and Bernini Restaurants in Ybor.
Carne Chophouse owner, Jason Fernandez, had chef staffed Prime Rib carving stations and a whole array of New Orleans style dishes to sooth the hungry palate. Playing to ones nose and tasty senses was Make Your Own Bloody Mary’s Bar and Champagne Mimosas station. People chattering among their groups and laughter in the air.
Carne’s Chop House & Bernini’s Sunday Brunch in Ybor makes for a Special Day to go out, eat  and of course be with friends. Make plans to attend their upcoming Sunday Delectable Themed Brunches.

Congratulations to the Bad Monkey!

One Year Anniversary to the General Dave & staff. Congratulations to a successful 7th Ave bar business in historic Ybor City.

You Can Not Make This Up.

 2 St. Pete Pride Stories
The second St. Pete Pride was in 2003. It was an over cast day with storm could all around us. Just as the parade started it started to rain. Cancel the Parade? Absolutely not! Just as the parade turned onto Central Ave the rain stopped. Mark jumped out of our car, “H.R.H. Princess Priscilla” then with ‘ PRIDE WALKED’ down Central Ave.,  10 blocks on his STILTS!!!
Fast forward to 2013. We were at the Stonewall kick off party at the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts for the ST Pete Pride VIP Party.  2 people walked up to Mark & said, “We know you. You were our waiter at Hamburger Mary’s!” Mark smiled and said, “Yes, I was, Good to see you again.” Then they said, “It’s good to see you’re working at our Pride event tonight!” OMG Mark smiles and said, “Meet my better half of 35 years, Carrie. I’m not working here. We are the honored Grand Marshals of St. Pete Pride Parade this year.”
Then and….. YOU CAN NOT MAKE THIS UP!!!! A man reached out to shake our hands saying, “Mark & Carrie I read your ‘Dishing with Mark & Carrie’ column every week! It’s good to meet you!!!” He was the St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster who was at the VIP event!!! Carrie said, “WOW you read our column?”  The mayor nodded and responded, “Of course everybody reads it.”
Tampa Bay issues on the new high speed ferry service, rapid transit train service for the area and GLBT issues were discussed as well of the economic impact that Pride brings to the city of St. Pete coffers.
Mark then wanted to personally thank the mayor for hosting St. Pete Pride adding,” St Pete Pride brings millions to GaYBOR District & Tampa too!”

Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project Presents:

“JEFFREY”

a comedy by Paul Rudnick

Starring ERIC DAVIS, CHRIS CRAWFORD, MATT MCGEE, SCOTT DANIEL and more!

Benefitting Metro Charities  HIV/AIDS programs.

Monday, July 1st, 7:30pm

freeFall Theatre, 6099 Central Avenue St. Petersburg

Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project is celebrating its 11-Year Anniversary with their Annual “Prelude to Pride” salute with a staged play reading of Paul Rudnick’s romantic comedy, “JEFFREY”. Whether catering a ditzy socialite’s “Hoe-down for AIDS” or cruising at the gym or at the annual Gay Pride Parade,  Jeffrey finds the pursuit of love and just plain old physical gratification to be the number-one preoccupation of his times—and the source of plenty of hilarity. Just after he’s reconciled himself to celibacy, Jeffrey meets the man of his dreams, who also happens to be HIV-positive. What follows is an audacious and moving romantic comedy with a difference—one in which the quest for love and where unflagging humor prevails even when tragedy might be just around the corner.

‘”Love is an adventure when one of you is sure … and the other positive”

“Wildly funny…Just the sort of play Oscar Wilde might have written had he lived in 1990s Manhattan” ~ NY Times

“JEFFREY” stars Eric Davis as Steve, Chris Crawford as Jeffrey, Matthew McGee, as Sterling, Scott Daniel as Darius, Drew Decaro, Sara DelBeato , Daniel Harris, Jason Ellis, and Susan Haldeman,. All performers are donating their time and talents for this production.

This performance will benefit PWA (People with AIDS) programs at Metropolitan Charities of Pinellas .
Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization whose mission is to raise awareness, provide assistance, and perpetuate a life of dignity for those affected and infected by HIV and AIDS.
