Week 4: The Tampa Citizen Police Academy

Week 4: The Tampa Citizen Police Academy
The Mark & Carrie Experience
SWAT Team, Bomb Squad, Marine Unit
It was another interesting and exciting week at the academy. Mr Vegas law class also joined us.  Major Keith O’Conner started of this weeks class. He is in charge  of the special ops. This includes 12 + special units, squads & teams. The 4 main ones are SWAT, Hostage, Bomb & Marine Divers.
Sergeant Richard Mills is in charge of the SWAT Team.  This is the very top 2% of the police force and is very hard to get into. All the members are volunteers who also work full time positions with the police. These volunteers are on call an impressive 24/7. The best discriptions is “They are the Cop, that Cops call when then need Help!!” The SWAT team did demonstration for us. A police chase cars with a hostatage take over. It all ended up with officers jumping of the top of building and rescuting the hostage. WOW
The Tampa Bomb Squad is one of the very best in the country. They train with the FBI and Army. Each officer goes thru a 6 week class costing $120,000 each.  The squad cover 6 counties and has 250-270 calls per year. The bomb suits cost $19,500 and can only be worn for 30 minutes due to the heat. The Robotscost an average of $160,000 each.  We then watched a video rates “FOUO” For Official Use only. WOW did we feel special. After the film it was out side to see 4 bomb explosions!!! The truck was way cool too. Tampa is one of only 4 in the USA to have a bomb container.
The rain started as the Marine Unit pulled up with one of their boast. There are 6 full time officers  who maintain & operate the Tampa fleat of 6 boast.  These boats are left in position thrupught Tampa Bay. they work together with the US Coast Guard, Tampa Fire and Stets of FL. beside regular operations they also escote cruise ships and chemmical ships in the harbor.
Next week is “Use of Force” Street Tactics, Simulations, Shoot don’t Shoot & traffic Stops.  Until then signing off…  Mark & Carrie

Out & About: VM Ybor House Tour

For the past 5 years the community just north of Ybor City has a planned house tour of rehabilitated and renovated time capsuled houses. The 12 stop historical tour is an annual charity drive for the The tour planning & work intertwines the community residents, the businesses re-building in the down trodden area, new investors and interested preservationists. This was a major growing part of the expansive building of Ybor City and the area was cut off with Ybor by the I-4 project in the 1960’s.
The eclectic mix of cigar worker homes, bungalows, dilapidated businesses, cigar factories and transformed historic buildings starting anew. The old Centro Austriano Hospital was rightly around the corner for the medical care for all the cigar workers on 21st Ave. Tampa’s early leaders recognized the need for recreational facilities. That is demonstrated by the huge 6 acres Cuscaden Park with all the baseball fields, walking gazebo areas and the famous decorated above ground Cuscaden swimming pool that has historical recognition. The park was named after Ohio transplant to Tampa, Arthur Cuscaden. He planted one of the first orange orchards and donated the grove to the city.
Starting off at the benefit to the community registration area was the Academy Prep Center in Tampa. Built in 1908, the school was one of the first public schools in the Ybor City area and was also known as the “English School” teaching the children of Cuban, Spanish and Italian immigrant workers children to learn English. The restoration of all the wood is beautifully restored. The school had been closed from 1971 til the restoration and re-opening in 2003.
Other great stops included the JC Newman Cigar Factory, Tampa’s renovated Fires Station # 2 and a dozen private beautifully rehabbed homes that opened there doors for review. The old homes is a preservationists and  Gay mecca of old historical building renaissance of a new upcoming charge and thriving part of old Tampa.
Thank You to all the VM Ybor volunteers for putting on the remarkable 2013 historical house tour.

You Can Not make this Up.

There are many fun memories of the Suncoast Resort. In front of our store facing the breezeway, above out main windows were 2 speakers. cross the street was a very large commercial building sitting in its own park. On the north side were 3 houses. The owner of the second park was always calling the police for to loud music. We were always getting in trouble with the police for music too loud. then the police realized it was not us but the 2 huge main bars. On Sundays we would open our store at 10 am and play Cajun. Then the bars took over at 12 noon. One October morning we changed the music to Polka. people started to dance the Polka and were having a great time. Then the police pulled up. The officers walked up to the dancers.  We looked surprised and said “We know why your here the music is to loud…..Right?” The officers started to laugh & said “No it’s not to loud. They are complaining the music is so awful bad… Please make them STOP!!!”
