The Must Do Event this Weekend.
Hamburger Mary’s GaYBOR Turn-a-bout
.
Out & About, Downtown Tampa
The fun starts in seeing the changing downtown Tampa skyline. Changes from a just few years ago. Now there is ice downtown Tampa? We don’t mean at the St Pete Times Forum either. The “ Downtown on Ice” rink set up for holiday skating is open week days every night and weekends opening at noon. It is a party and challenging feat for the newcomers on the ice rinks. It feels like you are really up north and not in 80 degree weather we are presently having.
December is a very busy time and a great time to show off our great city to visiting relatives and friends during the holiday season.
Coming up this weekend is the lighting in the Annual Tampa Christmas Tree Ceremony with Mayor Bob Buckhorn doing the honors of flicking the magical switch! This free event is set for Friday night at 6pm in the Curtis Hixon Water Front Park. Bonuses include entertainment, Magic 94.9 radio personalities, the Downtown Farmers Market being open and the Downtown on Ice rink open for novice and professional skaters. The crazy zany holiday classic movie, ” Christmas Vacation” will be shown outside!
I-4 To Selmon Connector to Open… YES!
The long last changing truck route that has run through Ybor City is finally opening the beginning of January. The new Toll Road is going to be taking thousands of the truck traffic from I-4 to the Port of Tampa on a new roadway. More than 10 years in the planning the final work and touches are presently going on.
It is about 1 year over the scheduled opening because of tricky maneuvering around CSX tracks and unexpected bad ground occurrences for the cement pillars.
FDOT will be re-landscaping the trees, scrubs and bushes. A total reconfigure of traffic, parking, walk crossings and bicycle traffic on the old beaten up 21st & 22nd roads in Ybor City. The major changes are from Adamo Drive up to MLK Blvd. and all from the FDOT budget, Local Community leaders, YCDC Board Members and FDOT directors had work shops and worked on the planning of the new road improvements.
What a great promising change in Historic Ybor City. Less noise, less dirt, less big tractors and trailers and hopefully smoother roads with less pot holes.
From the ground view above, it looks gorgeous and a compliment to our area in road construction.
SPECIAL NOTE: Do you want to run on the new connector Toll road before it opens to traffic?
A 5K Connector Race is being sponsored by the Port of Tampa and the FDOT at 9:30 am, Dec 28th. Runner registration and info is at www.RunTheConnector5K.com

Santa Speedo Run
The running of the 2nd AnnualSanta Speedo Run in Ybor City had hundreds on board to help ASAP’s Pediatric Children with AIDS/HIV in Tampa Bay. Heading up the 200 plus red Santa Speedo Runners annual charity run was Jay Aller, A.S.A.P. Project Director and his many volunteers who did another scholarly promotion with a great attendance of on lookers.
The bright red suited guys & girl runners ran the 1 mile race on Sunday, “World Aids Day” in GaYBOR/ Ybor City.
There was a great turn out of national and area runners. A salute to all! Participating was a reindeer team of runners connected together in red speedo reindeer attire, above MC FILM store running architect Elliott Wheeler, Hamburger Mary’s partner John, local businessman Bill Kanouf who ran after loosing a leg in a car accident, a lot of local GLBT bartenders and a special salute of gratitude to county employee EMS friend Brandon who ran the race with his buddy… ‘Wheelchair’ along side…”just in case, but I did it!” he said! He crossed the Finish Line exhausted but in high spirits with a very loud on looker applause.
Congratulations to this GaYBOR Member Non-Profit Charity on another community awareness event and the efforts of bringing forth Pediatrics AIDS/HIV commitment and help.
MC FILM is proud to be a continuing A.S.A.P. Sponsor.

Michael Shaw
Michael is one of the hardest working guys in GaYBOR. Even working several jobs he always has a big smile on his face. Stop by Hamburger Mary’s this week to say hi.
You Can Not make this Up.
There are so many crazy things that have happened at The SunCoast Resort. The soda lines in the TiKi bar were cut one day. Later that week they were cut again. Owner Lester Wolf was very upset and had cameras installed. To everybody surprise the bad guys were not guys at all… They were squirrels chewing the lines. Lester was very upset and grabbed his riffle. Looking like Elmer Fudd he was hunting squirrels in the courtyard. The management went crazy and took his gun away. Lester returned with a squirrel cage to trap the animals. With a big smile while pounding his chest Lester returned with a caught squirrel. When asked what he was going to do with it he said “I’m going to toss the cage into the pool, OFCOURSE!!!” One of the employees over heard this and release the poor squirrel!!! Lester returned the next day and caught another squirrel. When asked what he was going to do with it today, Lester said “I’m taking it to a nice park and release it.” With that he put the cage into his Rolls Royce and drove off. I guess we will never know if the squirrel every made it to the “Nice Park?”
