Dear salvation army,
Instead of worrying about putting Christ back into Christmas, maybe you should worry about putting Christ back into Christianity.

OH, La Cage Aux Folles!

Edouard Molinaro dead             La Cage aux Folles (1978)

Edouard Molinaro, nominated for an Oscar for directing “La Cage aux Folles,” a French farce about a gay couple that struck a chord with a broad range of audiences, has died at 85.

French President Francois Hollande’s office confirmed the death in a statement of condolence Saturday, praising Molinaro as “great, appealing and original” and a director who “conquered the public and the admiration of his peers at the same time.”

Molinaro’s career spanned six decades, including crime films and historical adaptations. He was best known for 1978’s “La Cage aux Folles,” which was nominated for several Oscars. The movie, about two men with a transvestite club in St. Tropez who try to temporarily pretend they’re straight, was remade as “The Birdcage” in 1996.

This was a favorite movie that we shared with countless friends. It was one of the first positive and humorous GLBT movies to go mainstream across the country. A representation of our lifestyle so many of our straight friends couldn’t understand. We first saw the movie in Elkhart, IN in 1978.

Wow,  what a great movie to revisit and watch!

Mary’s Turn-A-Bout Benefit.

This years charity event at Hamburger Mary’s Ybor City had all the staff changing to a gender bender! All in a benefit for Mary Care’s Charity. Can you recognize the staff in their gender change benefit roll? Many special guests included co-owner Katrina (Kurt King), It was a very uplifting holiday anniversary show generating $1000 for many local children’s charities.
Congrats Mary’s Guys & Gals for a wonderful show!

Ybor City’s Molly Ferrara Historical Dedication.

I was told that Molly would of really liked us. Molly Ferrara was elected Alcaldesa (Spanish Municipal Magistrate) of Ybor City in 1954. She was a proud Yborite business woman and political activist and spokesperson for over 40 years. She passed away in 1979.
The Distinguished Dedication Historical Marker is in Centro Ybor on 7th Ave. Her lists of accomplishments were brought to the Hillsborough County Historical Advisory Council by family members, in which I am a board member back in August. She is the first woman to have this historic distinction on a marker in Tampa. She was Tampa’s first woman tax collector besides running her 40 year old Columbia Music & Appliance Store which was next to Czar’s on 7th is on her list of achievements.
Ybor City Chamber of  Commerce’s  Anna Ramos told us that she had worked all through high school for Molly Ferrara at the Music store. ” She was a very good friend and boss.” she said.   Stop by and read all of her Ybor City initiatives.
In attendance and speaking was  a very impressive line-up of Tampa leaders speaking. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, Attorney Barry Cohen, retired Appellate Judge E.J. Salcines, YCDC Manager Vince Pardo, retired Tampa Tribune Photographer Tony Zappone (who also took the famous pictures of President John F. Kennedy in Tampa November, 1963), Tampa City Council Woman Mary Mulhern, Tampa City Clerk & HCHAC Chair Shirley Foxx-Knowles and family members.
I love historic preservation and she was truly a historic preservationist, community friend and Tampa Bay leader.

Annual GaYBOR Chili Cook-Off

The 3rd Annual GaYBOR Chili Cook-Off Contest had 13 entries vying for Tampa Bay bragging rights. The assortment of chili’s entered had chocolate, coffee, hot and spicy and had the packed Bradley’s on 7th customers be the judges. Chili chief GaYBOR comrads Mike Olds, Mark Eary, Scott W and Rich Kerin had the task of moving the taster crowd along.
Winners were Jane, Jake Zils, and Brad Hadfield. And Thanks to the other 10 inspired contestants.

Holiday Party in GaYBOR/Ybor City

It is always fun seeing the holiday activities and parties. Architect Elliott Wheeler and Interior Designer Karla Atkinson had a special soiree for friends and clients above us at MC FILM!
As we ask of everyone…. Party & Safety First!!!

You Can Not Make This Up.

In 1980 it was our first Christmas in Florida & we were students at USF. Carrie was working in the pharmacy at the VA Hospital. Mark was the photographer at the Sears Portrait Studio in University Square Mall and was a bartender across the street at Casa Gallardo Mexican Restaurant. Just out side the mall entrance to Sears was a Walden’s Book Store. There on this $1.00 table wanting “just us to have” was an “Ideals Christmas Cookbook” (Ideals Publishing Corporation 602-1).
We took the book home and spent many hours planning out the Christmas Eve party. We gave a open invitation to everybody at Casa Gallardo Mexican Restaurant. To our surprise over 50 people showed up. Most were students like us and had no place to go. It was one of the best Christmas Eves ever.
That $1.00 book became our favorite cook book over the years. Now every Holiday we turn to this book, which is full of other recipes stuffed into it too. There was one favorite recipe that we have made every year since. We actually make it for every Thanksgiving & Christmas too. It is our annual for 30 years,  “Pickled Shrimp” family recipe.  Here is a copy from the now brown page book complete with a gold star from Carrie!
Enjoy  What is your favorite holiday recipe? Write and tell us and we will share to the world!.

From the MC Film Mail Bag…

The Ybor Youth Clinic has entered into a formal partnership with the Lazy Days Homeless Youth Program of Camelot Community Care.  Through this partnership patients who are identified as being homeless or unstably housed are able to access housing services on site during certain days of the week.  This partnership enables us to continue meeting all the needs of the youth we serve, while leveraging existing resources in the community.  Details are still being finalized, but a case manager will be on site one day a week to provide services and youth may come in to complete the intake process and schedule an appointment for these services on any day the clinic is open.  Here at the clinic we believe that housing is health care.  This is just one more great opportunity to truly live into our mission; provide high quality, innovative, compassionate and non judgemental health care to ALL youth, in an environment tailored to their specific and unique needs.  If anyone would like more information or is seeking services they are encouraged to visit our website at http://YborYouthClinic.health.usf.edu or call us at 813.396.9021.

You can also include my information, if you think it’s appropriate.  I am dong the bulk of intakes at this point and scheduling all the follow-ups with Lazydays.

There is also a great way to support this partnership, and I’ve put the details below:

On Saturday, December 21st, Urban Body Clothing at 711 South Howard Avenue will be hosting their annual clothing drive to benefit the Ybor Youth Clinic and the Lazy Days Homeless Youth Program.  For this event customers are encouraged to bring their gently used, unwanted clothes for donation and they will receive $10 off their purchase.  Clothing that is appropriate for an interview is encouraged, but anything is appreciated.  In addition to the customer donations, Urban Body will be donating almost $10,00 worth of brand new clothing!  Everyone is encouraged to bring some clothes they don’t wear anymore and finish up their holiday shopping December 21st between 11 am and 6 pm!

Thanks for all your support!
