Cuban Sandwich Show Festival

This years 3rd Annual Cuban Sandwich Festival has changed to the “National Cuban Sandwich Festival.” Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn has declared in a proclamation the month of March as ‘Cuban Sandwich Month.’

The tasty Cuban invented sandwich’ was re-invented to popular demand in a culinary cultural traditional festival by Tampa’s David Audett. This enrichment of classic Ybor City sandwich has its roots right here in the Tampa bay area and is on stage to being a national competition!.

The now 2 day event had a packed Centennial park with live music including a special performance from a cultural exchange musical Cuban/ U.S. arts exchange the musical talents of Soly & Son, Food Truck Rally, the prized Traditional & Non traditional Cuban Sandwich Contest. Centennial Park was packed with festival

Lat year I had the privilege to partake as a judge in this highly competitive North Florida – South Florida war of the “Best Cuban Sandwich Award”. A future competition in 2015 for Best National Cuban Sandwich will have a variety of cities putting on the Ritz for this Top Notch special award.

The attendance level tripled over previous years and is growing. Among the top VIP Celebrity judges this year included Tampa City Council members Yolie Capin, Mike Suarez, and Harry Cohen HCC President Dr. Shawn Robinson, Columbian Restaurateur Casey Gonzmart, the local ABC Action 28 News Team, La Gazetta publisher Patrick Mantiega, YCDC Manager Vince Pardo, Political Publicist Anna Cruz, Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor and a dozen other VIP’s participated.

One thing at the festival, no one left hungary!

The GaYBOR T-Dance

A great turnout for the first GaYBOR T-Dance in GaYBOR/ Ybor City. The tuned networking afternoon party was held at Cristino’s Italian Restaurant. Over 100 attendees enjoyed the music by DJ/VJ Charles with great appetizers by the famed coal oven pizzeria. The passing TECO Streetcar, people meeting up with friends and a specially nice outdoor spring day made for a rewarding time at the Italian establishment. Owner Lenny Cristino was very pleased with the turnout and the number of people partaking in the festive monthly bash.

The GaYBOR District Coalition is 7 year old business organization with over 250 business members. www.gaybor.com

Dilemma ???

What to do when your best friend Jayme Kosar is having a Birthday. We know she loves seafood and she is the owner of the famed Ybor City Wine Bar. What do you do? The seafood part was easy… do a fantastic old fashion Louisiana seafood boil. Not leaving out the crawfishBut the wine part was the harder issue. Then a light bulb went off!!! Trader Joe’s has just opened in South Tampa. They are famous for a line of great inexpensive ($2.97 per bottle) wines. So we purchased 9 different ones and had a Trade Joe Wine Tasting Flight!

The Sommelier of the evening was Drew Drotleff. He took us thru whites to reds describing and critique along the way. The wines were actually good! Then we took it one step farther and all the appetizers came from Trader Joe’s and used Trader Joe’s reusable bags for place mat’s. At the end of the night everybody took home a goodie bag in the place mats. Happy Birthday Lady Jayme!!! Treat yourself to a must visit at the new Tampa’s Trade Joe’s Grocery store today.

You Can Not Make this Up.

Mathieu Stanoch is the set designer for Florida Entertainment. He is the creative genius behind the window decorations and huge club theme events. Mathieu was busy taking down this years St. Patrick’s Day Window display at the Honey Pot. Putting things away in the back of the club he heard a strange voice coming from the dance floor. There in the middle of the floor was a homeless woman with one leg in a wheel chair. She was pretending that she couldn’t speak and was asking for money.

Mathieu said many times “No and you need to leave.” Finally Mathieu said, ” Look this is how this is going to work either I call the cops or here (handing her a box of Lucky Charms from the tore window display) now leave.”

The homeless person was suddenly cured and could speak saying, “WOW!!!! Lucky Charms are my favorite!!”

As she rolled off down 7th Ave eating her Lucky Charms out of the box Mathieu thought…. Only in Ybor. LOL
