Jackson Rooming House

The old historic Jackson Rooming  House sat by itself with the hot Florida sun beating on the plastic covers of its make shift roof.  I was going to the National Train Day events at renovated Tampa Union Station. I knew it would not be long that this famous Tampa housing landmark would be standing. Broken windows, doors ajar, ceilings falling and plastic covers on the roof. It was going to take more than a prayer to save this building. Since being a preservationists and on a  number of county and city boards, I could see $$$ that weren’t going to be coming in time to save this ol’ dame. Or maybe??? Turn around and you see the newly built Encore project with the huge famed ELLA Housing unit one block north away. She stayed in this rooming house.

    Here is a little History from Wikepedia.

The Jackson Rooming House, also known as Jackson House, is a historic building constructed in 1901 as a boarding house in the city of Tampa, in the U.S. state of Florida. It provided accommodations to African-Americans and other travelers of African descent during the era of racial segregation. It is located on the north end of downtown at 851 Zack Street, approximately one block west of Tampa Union Station. On March 7, 2007, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

The Jackson Rooming House was one of the only places in Tampa where black travelers could find lodging, as they were not accepted in standard hotels of the day. The 24-room establishment began as a six-room cottage built by Moses and Sarah Jackson in 1901. Soon after, they added bedrooms and a second story in order to operate the rooming house, which remained in business until 1989. The Jacksons’ children inherited the business and the home remains in the possession of one of the Jacksons’ grandchildren.

During its time the Jackson House played host to several prominent entertainers, including Count BasieCab CallowayJames BrownElla Fitzgerald, and Ray Charles. Acts such as these would come to play the nightclubs of Tampa’s black business district, which thrived nearby along Central Avenue until the 1960s.

During the urban renewal of the 1970s most of the neighborhood surrounding the house was razed. By 2007, when the house was added to the NRHP, the Jackson House was believed to be the last free-standing residential dwelling in downtown Tampa.

In 2013, the Jackson House was deemed too damaged to be restored and faced likely demolition. In 2013, efforts were being made to save the historic Rooming House from demolition by the City of Tampa . As of January 13, 2014, Bubba the Love Sponge will own this property and will begin the restoration of the house.Soon after he withdrew plans blaming mayor Bob Buckhorn and city officials.

You Can Not Make This Up

Not Typical Party
    It was a quite Friday when I noticed from the balcony of Hamburger Mary’s, a long dark limo had pulled up. It was about 2pm. 5 guys jumped out. 4 of them were wearing matching T shirts that said, “I dig homeless chicks.” The 5th guy’s shirt said, “Give me yo panties!” It was a beginnings of a wild bachelor party.
     I yelled from the balcony, “Hey guys come up and do a shot!” The guys came up to the 2nd floor balcony and told me they liked my style.  The 5 of them were all college buddies from Chicago, now in their mid 30’s. They ordered drinks and hamburgers. Then they tell me that the night before they were kicked out of a fine restaurant, then a topless Girly Club. Then at a beach bar they told the guys to go home & to bed at 11PM.
    Jokingly they asked me, “What time did I think I would kick them out?” I guessed to myself, ‘about 4pm’!
    The guys sendoff party was in full force when a husband & wife couple walked in. After their second drink then went to the restroom telling me they would be right back. When they came back the woman had taken her panties off and gave them to the groom. Everybody laughed…. then the husband handed them his underwear!!!
    The shots started they guys then started to write on the grooms body????? 4PM came and they started to squirt ketchup off the balcony. I walked up to the leader and said, “I win it’s 4PM and time to move this party on. LOL LOL!”
    The guys agreed paying the bill and leaving a great tip. They asked me when to go next??? Hum….. I sent them to Covert Carol at the Green Iguana down the street.  A few days later I saw Carol. She thanked me for sending the guys. They were big tippers there too. She asked them to leave when they started to ask Grandmothers for sexual advice on how to satisfy their girlfriends. LOL LOL
    The strange things some straight people do. LOL LOL

TRAINING: DEVELOPING HOUSING for
HOMELESS PERSONS AND FAMILIES

All of you know how critical affordable housing is to exiting homelessness.   But do you know there is funding specifically for providing housing for people experiencing homelessness?  Most of the funding over the past 13 years has gone to Miami-Dade because organizations there applied for it.

It’s time for Hillsborough to get some of this funding.  To get involved, begin by attending this workshop.

Maria Pellerin Barcus, CEO

Increasing the supply of affordable rental housing is a critical piece in ending homelessness, but what does it take to be a developer? How does the financing come together and how far in advance do you need to start? Do you need an experienced co-developer and what are the risk and rewards of developing this housing? This training will cover these topics and more including:

* The organizational and financial capacity needed to be a developer
* How the various funding sources are structured
* Property management
* The roles of service providers
* Asset management

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn more about adding rental housing development to your organization’s business lines to provide housing for people experiencing homelessness.

Dishing with Mark & Carrie 4-30-2014

Tampa Domestic Registry, 2 Years Old
    In a very smart move from Tampa Councilwoman Yvonne “Yolie” Capin back in April 2012 to approve a Domestic Partnership Registry in Tampa. The covenant law allowed healthcare decisions, healthcare visitation,  educational sharing, funeral arrangements and more for GLBT couples.
    This measure went on to the Tampa City Council and passed then Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn signed the new Tampa law into effect. Now over hundreds of couples have utilized the right to be a recognized domestic couple in Tampa.
    It was very exciting for Mark & myself being in the Mayor’s conference room when Mayor Buckhorn signed the new historical law. He gave us the city pen he used to sign the new equality law.
    Enjoy your rights by going to Tampa City Hall and getting your Domestic Partnership Registry. It is another one of your rights in Tampa. Maybe, we will see in the near future a positive change in Hillsborough County Commissioners on their stand on passing the Hillsborough County Domestic Partnership Registry.

Miss GaYBOR 2014, Miss Dena Cass
    The reserved tables were decorated with colorful flowers and take home goodies. This years Miss GaYBOR Pageant theme was ” All that Shines!” The chatter and bustle of the 9 contestants and many  personal entourages of hair stylists and dressing gown outfitters were bustling on Honey Pot’s third floor. Mirrors and wardrobes were abound with bright flattering makeup lighting.  Makeup, dress layouts, props set and the bouffant wig hairdos all in order and clustered! Again, the GaYBOR District Coalition should be proud put’n on the Ritz!!
    At the helm of this years gorgeous pageantry was “Sheriff Mike” Wilson with assistants Prada, Walter Gio, Paul Hannah, Rich Kerin and GaYBOR President Mark Eary. The designed winning GaYBOR bling crown was exquisite in sparkles and appearance!
    This years winning GaYBOR  title goes to deserving local artist, Miss Dena Cass. She will be doing many guest appearance bookings across Tampa Bay and around the state. Nikki Monet retired her years reign on a very special nights performance.
    Congratulations to all contestants and to our newly crowned 2014 Miss GaYBOR, Miss Dena Cass!
