Dishing with Mark & Carrie 6-11-14

Gay Day’s or World Without Walt?
I was thinking, what would the world be like today if there wasn’t a man, Walt Disney? I put that question out to each and everyone of you. This inquiry comes about because of the annual Gay Days in Orlando that happened this past weekend. With 10’s of millions of park goers annually around the globe what would the world be without that creative genius?
This past weekend had over 350,000+ estimated GLBT tourists at Disney World, Epcot, MGM Movie Studios, Sea World, Universal Studios in Orlando’s tourist areas alone. That didn’t include the infamous Gay Icon Parliament House events! Other Gay events are also held around the world on Disney properties in Tokyo Japan, Paris France and in Buena Vista, California. .
Walt was a remarkable pioneer, visionary, artist, screenwriter and genius ” Entertainment Market-eer.”   Promoting and expanding ones imagination, young or old, and sharing youthful ideas from older stories and his animated created films. Now the 54 billion dollar corp is a common name worldwide with theme parks in Tokyo Japan, Paris France, Hong Kong China and the major theme parks here in California and Florida.
Headquarters for the empire and motion picture  studios are located in Buena Vista, California. More about the mouse man in his Wikepedia biography. But one thing is for certain we love the enchanted glimmering centerpiece Cinderella’s Castle, trips thru Tomorrow Land and the old Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.
As a child most all of us had seen a Walt Disney movie, been entranced with being a happy Disney Mousketeer, wanting to explore a fantasy land of unimaginable sorts and sing the many favorite movie songs from “Lion King”, “Frozen”, “Mary Poppins”, “Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs” song, ‘Hi Ho Hi-Ho Off To Work We Go’. Mark watches “Mary Poppin’s” at least once a year!
Yes, the kids come in groves to the theme parks and they are of all ages. They come and smile, laugh, experience and share a rekindling of fun times when they were growing  up. I just couldn’t imagine todays world without one man named… Walt Disney.
Gay Days Orlando at 24 Year Old, Expo Version
Things have really changed in Orlando and Disney World Theme Parks since 1990 but so have we. We know because we were there at the beginnings of Gay Days too! This year the Gay Days Expo was held again at the beautifully landscaped Double Tree Resort near Sea World and was wilder than ever. The parking lots at the resort were overflowing and we were sent to satellite lots and transferred by hotel carts. A ride at the beginning adventure i said to myself. All the 3 pools were in party use for 2 party events/ day & night including the Gay Days Sponsors Pool Party were we met up with many Tampa partiers.  The outrageously gorgeous suntanned P-Town Boys cladly advertised the northern P-Town, Mass Gay summer escape. The other pool party sites were the Women’s Pool Party with live music echoing the area and the humongous crowd at the Bear Pool Party where we ran into What’s Happening Magazine editor Pedro A., members of the Flamingo Car Club (Lambda Auto Group) , St. Pete Flamingo Resort owners Ed & Sammy, St Pete’s 2014 Grand Marshall Jay Aller and a RV show sponsored by Central Florida Gay RV’ng Club.
The inside exhibition halls were packed with mid day attendees visiting leather shops, wine companies, travel groups, Pride stores, insurance companies, non profits, (ie)  a full expo showcase of GLBT businesses.
I went to meet up for a luncheon with the owners and staff of Hotspots Magazine. Peter Clark- owner and Publisher, Scott Holland– Assistant Publisher and Mike Halterman, Editor all were greeting clients and put on a very nice array of food and drinks.
Attending were leaders for the new upcoming Gay Days across the country. A new Gay Days Las Vegas is set for this coming Labor Day Weekend and a new Gay Days Ft Lauderdale is set for Ft Lauderdale for this Nov 25th.

Genealogy

I just love www.Ancestry.com and the Internet today! This week I discovered 2 fun things. On Ancestry.com I found a person who was the descendant of my Great Grand Aunt. There were photos of her!!! How very cool was that!!! Then on Facebook at “Romanian Genealogy Society” I asked a question about a food called “Coliva”. Up popped recipes on how to make it but there was also an interesting story to go with it. This is known as the food of the dead. It is a traditional desert served after the service. It is made by the dead persons family. A big platter is served at the service then it is put into tea cups and sent home with family & close friends. You do not return the tea cups but keep them in remembrance of the person.  Suddenly a light bulb went off in my head!!!! My Grandmother had a kitchen cupboard full of mismatched tea cups and saucers. When as kids we would ask her about the cups she would smile and say they were gifts from friends. What a beautiful way to remember your friends & family. Today on Amazon.com I ordered “wheat berries” and will try to make coliva and remember my Grandmother.

You Can Not Make this Up.

We have this friend who is very loud. Especially when he is having cocktails. One day I was bartending and he was having a great time. After several drinks he closed his tab. Then decides to stay for just one more. Thank goodness he was not driving. I ran his credit card again for $5.00. He signed the bottom of the ticket then shoved it back  and says “You fill in the tip. Give yourself what you think your worth!” Tea Cup calmly smiled and started to write a $2.00 but instead wrote $2,000.00. Then wrote $2,000 tip on his copy and handed it back with out saying anything. (He actually rally charged $2 on the credit card) The next day he calls Tea Cup’s cell phone. & says “Uh I was just looking at my receipts from yesterday” before he could say anougher word tea Cup cut him off and said “Sorry I can’t talk right now I’m busy buying a new TV.” Then hung up.  We still laugh about this. LOL LOL

American Stage Theatre, 163 3rd Street North, downtown St. Petersburg

Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project is celebrating Saint Pete Pride Week by presenting an original comedy by T. Scott Wooten with musical selections by Michael Raabe.  The madcap pairing of Wooten and Raabe recently created local audience favorite productions of WIZARD OF OZ and BLOWN BY THE WIND.  This fun-filled evening will not only bring a smile to your lips but bring awareness and support to People who are suffering with HIV/AIDS.  All monies raised will benefit Metro Charities PWA (People With AIDS) programs and all performers are donating their time and talents to this good cause.

ALL ABOUT STEVE is based on the Bette Davis film, All About Eve where a star, at the height of her career is idolized by a younger actor, Steve (Scott Daniel) who gets to know her as her adoring assistant.  But something sinister is afoot(!) and the fellow show people are all egomaniacs who drift in and out of Margo Channing’s (Matt McGee) life. Can Steve be trusted?  Is Margo in love and enjoying her theatre success?  Who are these other people and what do they want from Margo?  And what’s all that singing about?  You don’t want to miss what happens next… especially with local all-star Matthew McGee at the helm!

Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization whose mission is to raise awareness, provide assistance, and perpetuate a life of dignity for those affected and infected by HIV and AIDS.
