Proud Uncles
Our niece Sarah married her partner, Jennifer several years ago. Now in our American Family we have a second niece and 2 great nephews.  They have a home in the Washington, D.C. area. When the Supreme Court handed down their Same- Sex Equal Marriage ruling we were all so exited.
Then later that night we received the following text & photo from our niece.
” Rainbow lights on the White House?!? What! Everybody out of bed, we’re taking a ride:) “
Here is that photo of an American Family.  We are so Proud.

St Pete Pride 2015, Parade
The largest GLBT Pride event in Florida, 13th Annual St Pete Pride had another great and successful event. An estimated diverse crowd of 150,000 for viewing the 130 unit night parade cheered the lit up decorated floats and walking groups. Large numbers came from across the state to be a part of the 2nd night parade festivities. A huge triumph right after the SCOTUS decision on the prior day, Friday morning, putting Same- Sex Equal Marriage legal in all 50 states. A Proud & Pride moment for everyone.
Grand Marshals of the 13th Annual St Pete Pride Parade were Larry Biddle from a vast number of business organizations he has headed including most recent Metro Wellness and Community Centers LGBT Welcome Center and as TIGLFF executive director. Ashley Brundage with PNC Bank and first transgender to head the Tampa Bay Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and other GLBT organizations is a very outspoken community activist and role model. Nick Janovsky the public relations director for Smith & Associates and founder & CEO of Strategic Campaigns, a political campaign think tank in Tampa Bay working on numerous local and statewide campaigns including Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner and St Petersburg City Council Darden Rice’s campaigns. The Grand Distinguished Organization was the Stonewall Democrats of Pinellas.
Except for the upper 90 degree heat that sunburning day, the evening air was a little refreshing. The evening dusk parade went off without any hitches. This year lights were lighting up the parade route all along the side streets of residents and inside businesses along Central Avenue.
On our way walking to the car with Judy B Goode, we had to do the annual stop at Lucky Star Lounge on Central Ave. to see bartenders Daniel Harris and others. We ran into former Central Bar owners of Detours Bar, Jim & Kris who now live an hour south of St. Pete on an island. What a great reunion place. The two guys who were on a float and got married during the parade also made their way into the little club along with 100’s of their best congratulating friends. You can imagine that with the numbers at the night parade everywhere you went, the places were packed wall to wall.
The new St Pete Pride logo of intertwining pavers were hanging from street lamps all along Central Avenues Grand Central District. Welcoming to visitors from all over the country and world. Congratulations St Pete Pride Board!

St. Pete Pride 2015, Festival

St. Pete Pride 2015, Festival
Thundering clouds in the morning washed the pavement for what then turned out to be a fabulous sunny Sunday for the Street Festival on Central Ave. Over 400 venders filled Central Ave. Music sponsored stages by Wells Fargo Bank and another stage by sponsored by Verizon FIOS had a great number of area acts performing. A 3 story zipline in the middle of the street festival had courageous attendees flying through the air with surrounding crowds on looking right on Central Avenues fair.
Local area businesses from banks, Insurance, newspapers, crafts, Non Profit organizations and a long block long area for a variety of tasty edibles. Don’t forget about all the Beer Gardens and all the open shops in the Grand Central District that had their doors open.
Musical DJ’s activities at Key West Bar & Grill and Queen’s Head had youthful crowds dancing in the parking lots. So many friends we knew were their displaying and working the happy mesmerized Pride crowd.
Misters and cold towels were being handed out by a great number of venders. Again, a typical hot humid day in St Pete but luckily no rain during the daytime festival.
A welcome greeting and Save the Date cards were traded with vendors letting them know of the I-4 Corridor of Prides upcoming TAMPA PRIDE 2016 Celebration coming next March 26th in Ybor City.
The next I-4 Corridor of Prides Celebrations will be in Orlando coming October 9-11th with Orlando’s Come Out With Pride Festival & Parade,Saturday, October 10.

Happy 4th of July
What are on your 4th of July plans? A friends cookout, day at Sunset Beach, home just relaxing, Fireworks at downtown St. Pete, Clearwater of Tampa? This year has changed in what the GLBT community have called a “Miracle decision from the Bench.”
It doesn’t matter of your feelings pro or con on Same-Sex Marriage but what does matter is that equality is equality! I remember groups marching and chants that were spontaneous at the old Suncoast Resort in St Pete. Prior to the evenings fireworks display and big name concert, it was always announced to remember our history to the 10-15,000 attendees.  2nd, that the 4th of July was Freedom’s Day for all Americans. It started by a time and place we all know and call “Stonewall.”
Well, I guess that tradition will be again chimed to the 10’s of millions GLBTA’s that now have the legal right to marry whom you love. Remember your NEW historic 4th of July Celebration.
We want to know, ” Where were you and what were you doing when you heard about the landmark SCOTUS, Same-Sex Equal Marriage decision? “
We will post your stories in the weeks to come. write us a line or 2, mcfilmfest@gmail.com, heading, “I Heard”.

TAMPA PRIDE Save-the Date Cards
Hold on folks. Getting ready for Pride 2016! The new TAMPA PRIDE Save-the Date cards are out on the streets. The next big TAMPA PRIDE event is March 26th, 2016! Make plans now or tell your corporate leaders and have them participate in the Diversity festival.

You Can Not Make this Up.

When we were going to USF there was a new apartment complex built. They were called “Garden Homes” and were pre fab single story units. We were at a party in one of those units when the host wanted to show us something.
There had been a fire in one bedroom and it burned a hole in the floor and scorched the inner walls. The guys living there didn’t want to tell the landlords. We thought that was one of the strangest things until last week.
We met two guys in their late 50’s. Asked how they met. The guys told us they have been together for about 5 years now. They were living next door to each other at an apartment complex here in Tampa. About a year into their relationship the guys took down the wall between the 2 apartments to make one big unit.
They told us with disbelief of management’s uproar and that the landlord actually got really mad. So in the middle of the night they moved out.
OMG…. They looked like nice intelligent guys. WOW

Dishing with Mark & Carrie 6-24-15

The Pride & Travel Issue
Don’t miss St. Pete Pride this Weekend.  http://www.stpetepride.com/

Travel: Our New Orleans Trip; Plantation Tours
Mark & Carrie hadn’t been to New Orleans for a long time. It was way before Hurricane Katrina and we wanted to revisit the “Big Easy” with all the great music, festivals and seafood foodstuffs in the French Quarter. Of course we had to revisit the many Gay bars on Bourbon Streets East End also. One thing never changes is the 90% hot humidity in NOLA.
You really can’t get the robust feeling of New Orleans outside of New Orleans. Yes, we live and work in Ybor City but the feeling, charm, assorted jazzy or blues music, architecture, spontaneous partying and food are all an eyeful of aromatic inner culinary absorption.
We had to take in the famous Gay clubs including Friendly Bar, oldest continuous operated gay bar Cafe LaFittes, Bourbon Parade, Oz, Eats and famed breakfast /sandwich corner, Clover Grill. There motto:Have character….don’t be one.

Everyone brings happiness into this business,

some when they come in, others when they leave.

Dancing in the aisles only, please keep off the tables.

No talking to yourself. Keep both hands on the table.

One never will forget the exploring of the historical French riverside city. The area have a mass assortment of 100’s tours accompanied by 100’s of tour companies. Obscure Cemetery Tours, Haunted Ghost Tours, Regional Home and Garden Tours,  Isolated River Swamp and Alligator tours and the huge sugar cane Plantation Tours that are approximately an hour away from the Quarter. Any will enrich your knowledge & expectation of the historic South’s French city.
We happened on the Plantation Tour of the 200 year old Alley Oaks Plantation and the Laura Plantation. Both were a welcoming wealth of Antebellum pre- Civil War era information. Both located on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. Both were enriched with being profitable Sugar Cane farms. One being American and very stiller with huge white 2 story pillars in the front of the 2 story, twenty-eight 300 year old oak tree lined shuttered white family mansion.
The Laura Plantation on the other hand was an 1800 Louisiana Creole built estate house and the difference was the bright colors of this house is of French influence. Both showed equal charm and the commitment to preserve the historic estate to be maintained after decades of neglect and the huge weathering storms.
The preserved historic tours envisioned you taking part in the huge lavish parties that were thrown on the landscaped gardens in the era. We took in the many buildings maintained including slave quarters, sugar refineries, outdoor kitchens, sheds, barns, worker’s structures and guests quarters away from the main house. The Alley Oaks had over 300 working slaves on the plantation in 1840’s.
A full day of witnessing southern history. Told that so many of these thousands of Southern mansions have been neglected and destroyed because of weather, land progress or being too expensive on restorations costs of the old plantation houses maintenance to be preserved.
Our trip in New Orleans took in a new captured landmark. Like Gasparilla is to Tampa, New Orleans’ Mardi Gras is Party time. A side trip lead us to the makings and processes of the popular Mardi Gras floats at Blain Kern’s Mardi Gras World right in the famous Garden District and Business area of New Orleans. How exciting to be on the floats in the many Tampa Bay parade events we have to offer but seeing them in the process of being made is an understatement. Step by step year round elaborate design work from a large group of talented committed artisans. Over 550 floats are in the huge float barns and the created characters and colorful hand made cartoonish characters and props are made out of huge sheets of Styrofoam, paper ma she’ or fiberglass. We saw so many characters from Marvel Cartoons, Wizard of Oz, Marilyn Monroe and 10,000’s of pure animated prismatic fantasy.
The new mammoth floats building location is close to the city center to where you can hop on the river front train to the floats buildings front door steps. Its old humongous warehouses were across the Mississippi River but have relocated in the past years to the New Orleans Riverside District.
Mark loves his ghostly tours and we chimed in on a 2 hour walking tour of the quarter. Our guide knew how to scare the bejeebers out of all the walkers. We walked the alleys, side streets and into buildings to hear all the mutter of deranged New Orleans residents. One particular haunted spot was at Delphine LaLaurie Mansion. Hundreds of experimental human torcher tests were done there.  Yes, the guide knew it was time to replenish us at a local watering hole for some refreshing adult beverages and more upcoming adventures. A few walkers actually had ghostly orbs appear on their digital cameras.
We indulged in the many popular cuisines, drank adult beverages under the stars, had assortment of Creole/ Cajun meals and explored the newest Frenchmen’s’ Street District with up and coming dozens of new jazz & blues clubs and eateries. It is located adjacent East of the main French Quarter.
We had a great time and when you go you will too.
