One of the most famous people in Ybor City is Dr. Ferdie Pacheco. He is an awarded artist, author, poet and was also a medical Doctor. Ferdie became a doctor at the local tobacco workers & family’s Mutual Aid Society, Trellis Clinic in Ybor City. Today this clinic is the Ybor Resort & Spa.
In the 1960’s Ferdie became the private doctor to the boxing great Cassius Clay who later changed his name to Muhammad Ali.
Visit Ferdie’s web site to see all the photos of them together at http://ferdiepacheco.com/ .
The next time you are walking down 7th Ave in Ybor City look down. The tobacco leafs in the stone all have Ferdie’s quotes etched in them. Also the artists has original paintings in Tampa City Hall, the Tampa Construction Services Building and many inside Carne’s Steak House in Centro Ybor.
Today Ferdie & his family are retired and living in Miami.
Gay Days Expo & Huge Party Events
Taking our time at the Big Mouse Day Party for the GLBTA community in Orlando. Thousands came to visit and take in the big Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Universal Studios or as we did the Expo  with 100’s of vendors at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton near Sea World. The fabulous 28 acre complex resort have parties going on at the three large pool areas. The Annual Women’s Pool Party was taken over by the Bear Party event and was relocated to another hotel.
The weeklong GLBT Disney Orlando events started in 1990 and Mark & Carrie are glad to be part of the founding and volunteering the beginning 8 years of this International acclaimed Gay event with the then pioneering computer group, Digital Queers! Red shirts and all.
Gay Days is always the first weekend in June. Why? Back at the start was the end of Florida Residents Days at Walt Disney World. It was the last weekend Disney special before summer rates and at a cost of $29 for a days entry.
The 2 big Pool Parties had hunks in speedos and beautiful bodied guys all in the newest skimpy swimming attire trends. Bears Party had the loudest bang for the splash! The pool was bouncing to both the sounds and the drag queen performers tossing beach balls into the pool and waterfall.
What a time especially with singer Judy B Goode and I going through the high energy music pool events.
Besides the expo and getting away from the 200,000 week event gay attendees, the host resort complex had 2 packed pool parties a day (costing $45 ea), the Miss Gay Days Pageant and reunion of friends.
By the way Miss Gay Days 2016 is also our Miss TAMPA PRIDE 2016 Alexis Mateo. Congratulations.

You Just Can Not Make This Up

FinishingSchoolH2

In the 1970’s I lived in a upscale high rise condo building in Minneapolis. I had a gay friend there who’s names was Mike. I will not tell you his last name. He was from a very famous and well to do family. Mike loved to go in drag and his drag name was Monica.  Every Wednesday Mike’s Grandmother would arrive in her chauffeur driven Rolls Royce.  Mike and Grandmother would go to a private club on top of a skyscraper for lunch and cocktails.
Then Mike started to do what he called day time drag and asked us to call him by his drag name all the time now. After about 6 month Monica announced that she was going to be in drag the rest of her life. Grandmother knew about Monica but not the day time version. So Wednesday came and Monica asked grandmother to come up to the apartment and talk first….  Monica explained that for the rest of her life she was going to dress as a woman.
Grandmother just smiled and said, “From now on I will call you my Granddaughter Countess Monica! Let’s go to the club for martinis.”
Their Wednesday date continued on until grandmothers passing. Monica fell in love with a man and his 2 young children. Together they raised the children. Monica and her grandmother opened a finishing school for young girls called, “Countess Monica’s Finishing School for Proper Young Girls.”
Today Monica is a Grandmother herself.

Wood Window Make Over

As many of you already know we are in the process of restoring a Historical Southern Plantation home in Gary Town. Located just East of Ybor City. Located inside the home were 2 original Hillsborough County Courthouse windows. They were in bad shape with water and termite damage. Our friends at Wood Window Makeover did an unbelievable job restoring them. We highly recommend them for all your restoration projects. Located across the street from Schiller’s in North Hyde Park.

Obituary; David Karst

12565367_1111545418870338_40550726904031863_n

David Karst, Suncoast Project coordinator passed away this past week. He was the face for ASAP, AIDS Services Association of Pinellas and was the beginnings of the Suncoast Project, a the small CDC funded AIDS outreach  as the coordinator that started at the Suncoast Resort & Hotel complex in South St. Pete in late 1990s. The gay health project grew into a large facility at the famed gay resort, testing, counseling and handing out information about the silent deadly virus.

David worked hard bringing funding into a taboo health subject in the gay world, HIV. As coordinator he had teams and health staff counselors handing out information and testing stations all over St Petersburg at events, festivals and gay bars in the ASAP mobile  unit used for testing clients discretely for HIV.

David wore the smiling grin on his face most all the time. He had the most pleasant demeanor about himself and about life. He needed it for the empathy and sympathy the tests brought to the tested clients. Sometimes good and heartfelt and other times reality check and sad.

FREE TESTING signs were visible on the mobile van and thousands of men knew that they had to be tested. The quick test was convenience for the possibly infected but not knowing individual.

As times changed and the Suncoast Resort closed, David brought the mobile testing unit to the newly formed gay area in Tampa in the  GaYBOR District in historic Ybor City for Free testing every Friday night.

Immediately David had ASAP join the gay friendly changing organization district group. He furthered the cause by going setting up the colorful mobile unit to the gay encompassed large outdoor campground, the Sawmill Campground in Dade City.

The Flamingo Resort opened and so did the return of staple offices for the Suncoast Project.

Top fun associated events that showed the fun side of awareness was the Miss ASAP Pageant, and Dine Out For Life fundraising events for the community to get involved in. David was the start and in the center of the activities.

Your work will long be remembered. Your generosity was always seen. Your love of human spirit showed.

A Day of Celebration of Life for David Karst is in the plans by his so many loved friends. We will keep you informed.
