Tampa City Council District 5
Special Election
Early Vote Open
Today starts Early Voting in the Tampa City Council District 5 Special Election due to the untimely death of Councilwoman Gwen Henderson. Sites will be open daily from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm through this Sunday, September 7.
We encourage everyone who is registered to vote in that district to make sure that you get out to vote at one of the early vote locations or on Election Day, September 9! If you have already cast your vote by mail, thank you!
Due to the plethora of excellent candidates and the high likelihood of a runoff, our members voted to not make an endorsement at this time. However, we would like to highlight the candidates who participated in our endorsement process by filling out a questionnaire and participating in our forum on August 17th:
Albert Cooke
Thomas DeGeorge Jr
Fran Tate
Carroll “Carrie” West
Jose Vazquez
Naya Young
We thank these candidates for their support of the LGBTQ+ community, for taking part in our endorsement process, and wish them all well on Sept 9!
Congratulations Jesse Joseph & Luis Daniel Monterrey Sánchez.

Residents, the Historic East Ybor and Gary Neighborhood Association (HEYGNA) has received notice of hearings in front of the Hillsborough County Planning Commission and city of Tampa City council to hear a proposed change of land use, initiated by a private party, for parcels located in South East Ybor and one located outside our boundary located just East of Ikea. The proposed change would change the use of the parcels from light industrial LI and general Mixed use M24 to Urban Mixed Use 60 or UMU-60 and in one of the to community Commercial 35 (CC-35). Please see dates of hearings and ways to participate in the pictures attached. The planning commission found the proposed changes inconsistent with the current plan.
The new rabbit ears TV antennas are not like your Grandparents! Today they are digital and incredible. We have a back up set on our main TV and it brings in over 100+ stations. When the power goes out with a small generator you can still watch TV and see what is going on in your neighborhood with out the cable.
OBITUARY
Vincent LoScalzo
From Tampa Mafia Tours
Vincent LoScalzo, longtime Tampa bar owner, businessman, and the last reported boss of the Tampa Mafia, died yesterday at age 88.
One of the last links to the Trafficante era, Vince was born on May 6, 1937, in Alessandria Della Rocca, Sicily. He was a successful businessman and owned and operated several bars in Tampa, including Rumors Lounge, Imperial Liquors, and the legendary Brothers Lounge. His father, Angelo “the Hammer” LoScalzo, was also a member of the Tampa Mafia.
According to local, state, and federal law enforcement, as well as numerous underworld figures, LoScalzo succeeded Santo Trafficante Jr. when Santo died in March 1987. LoScalzo had a few brushes with the law, but was retired and inactive for many years.
