You Just Can Not make This Up

Being creatures of habit, sometimes we get stuck in a rut and go the same restaurants over & over. This week we were on Hillsborough and decide to try a different Asian buffet.  It was much smaller than our favorite at Britton Plaza. Its was very good. We were sitting right next to the buffet. A lady walks up to the buffet…… and pulls out a fork. She actually started to walk around the buffet tasting everything!!! The servers ran up to her with a plate and said “Please take a plate and take small bit of everything.” She pushed the girl out of the way and preceded to eat off the buffet. We passed on seconds and left.

Our friends in the transgender community do have a tough time. Luckily that many have a great sense of humor to get thru the day. One of our close friends came to us laughing and shared this story. She was working in a restaurant as a server. A lady guest pulled her aside and in a shy voiced ask if she could ask her a question. Our friend said sure. Then the lady said it was a very personal question. Our friend thought to herself OK here comes the questions; Are your boob real? What plastic surgery did you do? Is that a wig? Who dose your makeup? etc, etc, etc. Our friend just smiled and said “Sure darling you can ask me any question.” The lady in a very soft voice then said……..”Can I borrow a tampon?”  Our friend was taken totally by surprise and said “I’ll check my purse but I think I just ran out”

PROUD UNCLES
Our niece Natalie married Ryan about 2 years ago. The classic wedding was held at the Rocking H Ranch in Lakeland. This past week the wedding was featured in Weddings Illustrated. The title was REAL FLORIDA WEDDING. One funny moment in the wedding was… The DJ was a friend of ours. He didn’t know that Natalie was our niece. We walked up to him and said HI. With a look of surprise he told us this was a fancy private wedding and we couldn’t be there. He actually thought we were party crashers. LOL   Here is the link to the story and photos.

Time for a new car? Years ago on Hillsborough Ave in Tampa there was a large famous car dealership. You would drive onto their lot. The salesmen would ask if they could start your car to hear how it runs, before making a trade in offer. The buyers would hand over their car keys. The the car salesperson would actual…. Throw your keys onto the dealership roof!!! There now you have to test drive a new car to get home!!! This happened 100’s of times. When one day the police got tired of coming out and closed the dealership down!

Back in the 1980’s Mark was bartending while attending school at a then national large restaurant chain on Fowler Ave. The General Manager called a big meeting of all the staff. Exciting!
At the meeting was the national sales manager. He was all entrenched about a new regional sales competition that we were all in. He went on in details to explain that the person with the highest daily sales average over the next 6 weeks would actually win…..Ready… A gold ( maybe plated) restaurant key chain!!!
This restaurant has moved out of Tampa Bay. Humm do you think the key chain incentive worked??? LOL

One of our favorite Holiday stories. This happened in the 1990’s. there was a young lady working for us. She was very beautiful and can we say not the brightest crayon in the box. She told us all excitedly that she was done with her family Christmas shopping for the year. We all applauded.
She was so excited in telling her holiday trials in shopping.  This year she got a new electric stove for her Grandmother, a new washer and large electric dryer for her parents, a big 36″” TV for her younger brother and a new stacked stereo system for her high school sister.
We surprisingly asked, “WOW that must have cost you a fortune! Did you win the lottery?”
She said with a straight face…… “Oh no it only cost $5.00. I went to the rental center and they were having a sale. Just $1.00 for the first week. Then my family can take it from there.”

Last week we wrote an article about the Village Inn Restaurant on Dale Mabry in Tampa. They are famous for Free Pie Wednesday. The founder Dow Sherwood was quite the colorful character. We posted the story on facebook. The replies back at us took us totally by surprise. WOW what history! Here is one reply….
Jim R wrote….

I met Mr. Sherwood several times in the ’70’s. I would go there after church & one of my church friends knew him. I also heard that the Village Inn on Dale Mabry was the site of sit-ins in the 1960’s. A member of First United Church of Tampa (UCC) told me she was a member of the ‘PIE’ Ladies (People for Integrated Eating). Black & White women would sit together at tables at the Village Inn. While they were served coffee, the restaurant refused to serve the PIE Ladies food.

Last weeks story….

Village Inn
Over the past 30+ years we have seen the Village Inn on Dale Mabry go thru many changes. It has just been re decorated and renovated to a retro 1960’s looks. All freshly decorated in new tones, orange & browns with chrome accents.

Talk about a full circle. I love the pancakes there!
Years ago the owner, Dow Sherwood would walk up to tables and tell very racy jokes. He really was a very personable man. The first time on a visit there, he did this. We thought who is that old guy?
Who else have memorable experiences with Mr. Dow?

One night I was walking past Carne’s Sidewalk Restaurant at about 11PM. A Grandmother jumped up and excitedly yelled “LOOK WHO IT IS!!!” She then started to give me a big hug .I just smiled.
Then she says….“I just LOVE You Jimmy Buffett!” I laughed and said, “Well, I love you too!”
Her grandson looked embarrassed and told me, “When Grandma gets cocktailed she thinks every guy in a Hawaiian shirt is Jimmy Buffett.”

The Cruise Ship Season has just began again. This week we were driving thru Channelside as a ship was loading. There was a family boarding and  dragging their luggage and 4 cases of soda. LOL  This reminded me of a time last year. It was a busy Sunday afternoon. A couple came to the balcony and were upset over the loud music inside. I smiled and said that the overture to the Show and is a little loud. They asked what show. I said our G rated Sunday Funday Dray show. They asked “WHAT SHOW!!” I said a drag show, then they asked what kind of show that is 2 or 3 more times. Trying to be PC I answered several times than said “men in dresses.” They were shocked and yelled we want nothing to do with that.  I was very polite giving them great service and found out they were going on a cruise (BFD). They had a coupon from a magazine and I applied that. The couple paid in cash, thanked me then left. I walked over to the table and there was a 30 cent tip…OK?? But the best part was…  they actually took the ketchup and mustard off the table!! Though to myself… poor couple must be their first cruise and they didn’t think there would be ketchup and mustard onboard. LMAO

You Just Can Not make This Up

One night an upset lady waked up to the bar and said that she was very disappointed. I asked why? She told me that she had come to see a drag show and we had a real woman on stage instead. I smiled and told her that was a drag queen. She then insisted that it could not be because she had big real bobbies. Once again I smiled and said those are implants she got them at the BOGO SALE. Buy One and Get One. She didn’t smile but actually said…. “Now I’m really confused. If they are fake boobies then why are they sagging so much?”   I smiled….Gravidity????
