"Barbarella Lounge" Soft Opening in YBOR

A positive direction for the 1920 East 7th Ave area of Ybor City with the opening of Barbarella’s Lounge (in the old Fuel Bar). Just 3 weeks earlier Hoffman Porges Art Gallery had a re-opening with new owners retired Gen. Dave Scott and wife, Jill Scott and now a new lounge on the same block. The soft opening prior to Thanksgiving had a green light for its success! A lot of local bar and business owners took in the redo of the old blighted club. A lot of work had been done to the interior and a whole lot of cleaning was witnessed. It is a very large bar to fill. A new inside video dance club, outside very large performance stage and upstairs a 2nd level bar with chairs & couches in divided portals. The balcony view of downtown Tampa is gorgeous. Different night themes include Indy 80’s Night, Mac & Cheese, Wave, Grits and Gravy and Indy College Nights.
“A lot more work to do but the opening tonight is great with more people here than we anticipated.” said owner Micky Gannett. Partners in business Micky Gannett and John Gardner said more new events are planned from their other clubs. John is a connoisseur  of all types of music from 60’s through today. The new club will add to Ybor City a new dimension for music lovers taste. Some new and some old. They also are owners/partners with Independent Bar in Orlando and Barabarella Lounge in Austin, Tx.

House Colleagues Laud Frank’s Leadership
Openly gay and lesbian U.S. Reps. Tammy Baldwin, Jared Polis and David Cicilline praised their colleague, U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., following his announcement that his current term in Congress will be his last. “Barney Frank was a groundbreaking pioneer and one of the most insightful, knowledgeable and humorous people ever to grace the halls of Congress,” said Polis, a Democrat from Colorado.
But on the local level, Rep. Barney Frank is a friend that took his time out last winter and called me to see how my Tampa City Council campaign was going. I know every congressman has a lot on their plate and to take time out to call someone he barely knows. “Thank You!”.
Barney complimented my efforts and said, “Keep up the good work!”
Top Marine Says Service Embracing Gay Ban Repeal
Since the lifting two months ago of a longstanding U.S. ban on gays serving openly in the military, U.S. Marines across the globe have adapted smoothly and embraced the change, says their top officer, Gen. James F. Amos, who previously had argued against repealing the ban during wartime. “I’m very pleased with how it has gone,” Amos said in an Associated Press interview during a week-long trip that included four days in Afghanistan, where he held more than a dozen town hall-style meetings with Marines of virtually every rank. He was asked about a wide range of issues, from his view of the Marine Corps’ future to more mundane matters such as why he recently decided to stop allowing Marines to wear their uniform with the sleeves rolled up.  www.Biggaynews.com

The second Saturday of every month the YAA hosts a themed art exhibition that not only promotes their member artists, but promotes the needs of the community and charity organizations in the area. From “Ta’-Ta’s for Ybor” an art show/breast cancer fundraiser for American Cancer Society to “Art is Cooler” an art challenge for the “Coolest” art on stainless steel mini-fridges provided by Red Bull, the YAA strives to be on the fore front of creating one of a kind events that help (re)introduce the local art scene to the public.

With the holiday season in full swing, the YAA focused on creating an event for December that encourages shoppers to support local arts and retailers.  Joining efforts for the day with Hart Streetcar Holiday Connection – $0.25 rides, Centro Ybor Holiday Spirit, Parks and Recreations 2nd Annual juried art show “Arts in the Park” and Saturday Market in Centennial Park, “Deck the Walls – Art Under $100” compliments the day long holiday festivities throughout the historic district and offers holiday shoppers an affordable artistic alternative to mall shopping. From fine artists to sculptors, arts and crafts to hand-made jewelry, this holiday art crawl gives people the opportunity to share the gift of art, support local artists and retailers and rediscover to the treasures of Ybor City.
