Indiana Launches Gay License Plate
Indiana has launched a gay licence plate complete with rainbow logo aimed at young drivers. The state’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles had originally turned down an application for the plate from the Indiana Youth Group, a gay, lesbian and transgender group for people aged 12 to 21. They claimed it did not have statewide appeal and said the group could not ensure profits from the sale of plates would not be used for salaries.
Gay “Honor Killing” Movie Shakes Turkey Up
On a hot summer’s day in 2008, 26-year-old physics student Ahmet Yildiz was shot dead when he popped out from his Istanbul apartment to buy ice cream. The main suspect in the killing, a fugitive still wanted by Turkish police, is Yildiz’s father, who could not accept that his only son was in a homosexual relationship. The case, widely believed to be Turkey’s first gay “honor killing”, has inspired a movie “Zenne”, which opened on January 13 and explores gay sexual identity and prejudice in overwhelmingly Muslim Turkey. UK Muslims Convicted in Landmark Gay Hatred Case
Three British Muslim men were found guilty on Friday of stirring up hatred by distributing leaflets calling for the death of homosexuals in what prosecutors said was a landmark case. The men, from Derby, had posted and handed out pamphlets near their local mosque with the title “Death Penalty?” featuring a mannequin hanging from a noose and saying gay people would to go to hell. The leaflets were part of a protest by a group of Muslim men against a forthcoming Gay Pride parade in the city.
ON The Docket
Hey Carrie – I wanted to share a link to my show last week that the community would find useful… I tackled subjects of teens/violence and the bullying epidemic with USF Criminology Professor Dr. Kathleen Heide. In the context of bullying I focused on the Tyler Clementi case from New Jersey and a 15 year old girl who threw herself in front of a bus on Staten Island last week. Dr. Heide and I covered many issues about how teens can cope with coming out and parents can do the same, how gay teens can deal with bullying and the responsibility that needs to fall on our schools to curb the problem. Her full interview starts at 12 minutes in. We are also moving into our new HD studios in Ybor in the next two weeks, so I would love to have you come back on our show when your available. Hope to see you soon!

St. Petersburg College’s historic Palladium Theatre, in downtown St. Petersburg, will be the new location for the “Floridiana Festival & Highwaymen Artist Show,” being held on Sunday, January 29th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
The focus of the January 29th “winter show” remains on early Florida tourist memorabilia, but will also see a return to the eclectic offerings of earlier Floridiana Festivals, as well as incorporating a touch of Hawaiiana. Attendees will find everything for sale from fun Florida travel ephemera and tacky tourist treasures like alligator handbags and flamingo figurines, to vintage Florida photographic art, and citrus and cigar box labels. Discover small furnishings and lighting made of Cypress knee woods, vintage wall mirrors with flamingo images, ceramic statues of tropical birds, and old Florida art. Decorators will especially enjoy the tropical backclothpillows. One of the largest collections of vintage Florida license plates will be available for sale as well.
Several Florida authors will be participating. Larry Roberts, author of “Florida’s Golden Age of Souvenirs: 1890 to 1930” and considered by many to be the “guru” of collecting old Florida memorabilia will be exhibiting and selling, as well as Ken Breslauer, author of “Roadside Paradise — the Golden Age of Florida’s Tourist Attractions 1929-71” and Wayne Ayers, author of numerous Florida history books, including “Tampa Bay’s Gulf Beaches: Fabulous 1950’s and 1960’s” and “St. Petersburg: The Sunshine City.”
The Florida Highwaymen are an important part of Florida’s cultural legacy, and the January 29th show is a wonderful opportunity to meet and mingle with these artists, who will be selling their beautiful Florida sea and landscape paintings. Meet James Gibson, Issac Knight, R.L. Lewis, Roy McLendon Sr. and Carnell Smith at the show.
Complimentary valuations of vintage Florida paintings – including that of the Highwaymen – will be available at the show by an appraiser and expert in the field. If you’re not sure what your old Florida art is worth, or who the artist may be, bring it with you to the show.
Special features are the lecture and slide presentations. At 11:30 am, Dr. Gary Mosswill discuss “The Culture of Aloha Shirts.” His collection of vintage Aloha shirts is featured in the Schiffer book “Hawaiian Shirts: Dress Right for Paradise,” and has also been exhibited at the American Textile History Museum. This interesting talk will cover the history of Aloha shirts, what makes them collectible, and how to recognize if your shirt is valuable. Wear or carry your vintage Aloha shirts to receive a free appraisal of age and value. Several exhibitors will have vintage Aloha shirts, including “The Aloha Shirt” folks, who will have hundreds of shirts for sale at the show.
Attendees can also enjoy the lecture “Taking a Textile Trip Back in Time…to the Era of Barkcloth” by Brian Walsh, aka the “King of Barkcloth” at 1:00 pm. Brian is a textile archeologist of sorts, having spent over two decades searching for the very best of barkcloth designs. Covered in Brian’s talk will be a discussion of an era gone and the impact barkcloth had on the designs of the time, how to differentiate new from old barkcloths and what are the most collectible patterns and colorways, plus tips on collecting and caring for vintage fabrics.

Some of you have asked why we are no longer using the St. Petersburg Coliseum for this special event.
The Board took many things into consideration before we made the decision to change venues, including the feedback we have had from you over the last few years.
As good stewards of the funds generated by these charitable events, we can no longer justify the cost of the Coliseum.
The Sweetheart Dance no longer has 1200 women in attendance due to the economy, fewer young women attending, and the loss of many of our dear friends and supporters who have passed away.
We have also had an increasing number of incidents where our guests were approached outside the Coliseum by panhandlers and others who have caused discomfort and the need for security to respond.
After taking all these things into consideration, the Board of the Sonia Plotnick Health Fund is very excited to welcome you to The Largo Community Center which we fell in love with at first sight!
Going to the Sweetheart dance?

For the first time ever, in Tampa there was a totally nude men’s show!!! The creatively artistic unclothed men were from Liquid Lounge. The event was hosted at the Adamo Drive strip spot, SKIN Tampa, in Ybor City at 1621 2nd Ave. To the delight of everybody there it offered the bare essentials. The ‘au naturel’ shows were Very Classy and non stop from 7pm to 4 AM! Hundreds from around the area and state packed SKIN for the event. We must say that for a strip club SKIN was very 1st class, clean, very friendly & totally a bare blast of FUN!!! We are sure you all want to see the photos but we have something even better…… We went with the guys to learn their 1st stripper pole techniques & stayed for the finals. National Convention GOP’rs visiting, we now have another alternative for you. Here is the video… http://youtu.be/fkuqNKQJs3M
It was so cold last week that “Hell Must Have Frozen Over!”Carrie actually bought a new cell phone!!! When we walked into the Verizon Store at 714 S. Dale Mabry, Tampa, to our delight there was smiling and ‘cowboy line dancing’ Mike Sklarz behind the counter!!! Many of us remember that this was the location of the original Baxter’s Lounge in the 1980’s! Then it became a fast food chicken place, then verizon wireless. Mike was beyond FANTASTIC and was FABULOUS!! He took his time to explain the new phones then, with the patience of a Saint, Mike had us working our new 4G phone like professionals in no time. Now is a great time to upgrade your phone! Give Mike a call today at 813-597-4000 or email at Michael.Sklaz@verizonwireless.comhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=501346981

This new Florida Fantasy Make Believe Political Game is just like NFL Fantasy Football League or the NBA Fantasy Basketball League except with local & national hot political characters. Wow you can have a team of many different professional politicians all wanting to get to the top of the board as they work to become President of the United States.
How the Internet game works; You get a chance to pick any local political leader, 2 state legislators (any state), 1 governor, 2 PAC lobbyist groups, 2 aspiring Congressional Members and 1 U.S. Senator. No presidential choices, that is where your leader has to win to become the president. You choose 3 topics that you would fantasize you want passed by your state and 3 topics then go on to the national congressional floor for discussion. 3 discussions get to the Congressional floor and win…. You win!!! A great way to play and not listen to needs of the constituents and you are fighting against high profile online political powerhouses.
Beware of the included 20 radical right and left wing constituent Wild Cards who work against anything that you would imagine would be great for the people and of course yourself! 4 Independent constituents work always in your favor and trump anything against your fantasy political team. The winner of 3 state topics goes onto the next level of national fantasy importance. Remember PACs can’t talk to any elected official (wink wink) but can get your topic to the different legislative floors (state & national) through Independents or constituents or by paying off other top leaders. Your fantasy mission is to have your team win the make believe presidency by having your leader win. (All the rules & kinks of the game of course are not all worked out).
TAMPA, FL, January 4, 2012 – Community Stepping Stones, a nonprofit creative learning center in Sulphur Springs, announces the launch of an innovative adult arts education program: “Inside The Creative Studio.” The 20+ teaching artists who are offering classes are among some of Hillsborough County’s best known and loved professionals. There will be an Open House to meet the artists from 2-4pm on Sunday, January 15 at Community Stepping Stones (1101 E. River Cove St. in Sulphur Springs.)
Planned as a distinctive departure from the standard “how to” art class, these workshops are designed to inspire participants to view art as a chance to practice thinking as much as acquiring a skill. Class sizes are small, mostly 10 or less.
Workshop offerings include popular watercolorist, Taylor Ikin teaching “Is Yupo for You”; Dominique Martinez, the creator of those intriguing metal rooftop dragons with “Creative Welding”; and jewelry makers Brenda Gregory and Audrey Parramore. Nationally-acclaimed portrait photographer, Pepito, features his talents; but if your preference is more towards animals, Dianne Blyer offers pet photography. Elizabeth Mitchell teaches silk painting; Joyce Lazzara shares the joy of oils and Terry Klaaren offers rain barrel and plein air classes. There will also be storytelling, script-writing, basket-making, ceramics, creative thought and papermaking. Historic preservationist, Linda Saul-Sena, will even guide architectural walking tours of the city.
Aside from their format, what makes these workshops unique is the artists are working as part of a social enterprise to support Community Stepping Stones – a creative learning center that helps at-risk teens become successful adults. Half of the registration fees helps the center support art programs for these youth.
Many workshops are held (not surprisingly) inside the creative artist’s studios. Others will take place on the tranquil, wooded campus of Community Stepping Stones, along the Hillsborough River.Classes begin in mid-January and run continually.
Just before Christmas I spoke to about 100 homeless at Heaven’s Kitchen at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church on Waters Avenue. I don’t get that far north very often.
You know me, I am more likely to be in SOHO than at a church in North Tampa.
I recognized one guest, but couldn’t place from where. I will call her Mabel.
She spoke to me afterwards, Mabel is a lady in her 70’s that lives in a condo on Bayshore Blvd. I have known her for years. She asked me not to let anyone know she was there. She told me she has meals at several churches a month because it is her only way to have enough money to pay her electric bill. Mabel owns her Bayshore condo but can’t sell it in today’s market and is upside down in the value anyway.
Mabel has been able to find some help by eating a few times a week at some of the churches and meal providers.
Our purpose is to help people to help themselves by creating their own small business of newspaper distribution.
It is working.
We put together a 300 person vendor sales force of Tampa area homeless and near homeless in less than 60 days that has made over 20,000 sales.
Mitch Perry at Creative Loafing tells you all about it in this week’s issue here.
Why ? Because we had the capability to do it and because it was the right thing to do.
On average a vendor receives about $2 for each paper they sell. With 20,000 papers sold in 60 days it means we have put about $40,000 in the hands of the homeless and near homeless.
And of course that means money being spent at local businesses.
It takes us $30 to equip a vendor with his first batch of papers, a safety vest, a photo id, sign, carry bag, and supervision and training.
We are overwhelmed with the response and urgenly in need of your help. Please help by sponsoring a vendor or placing an ad in our February issue. You can get information and sponsor a vendor online at TampaEpoch.com.
Why ?
Tampa Epoch is near to becoming a self sustaining entity and because it is the right thing to do.
Please help now by sponsoring a vendor online here. It is only $25 but can mean a life change for someone like Mabel.
