Will the last LGBTQIA+ person leaving South Tampa, Please bring the Rainbow Flag!!!
Last week was a very said day for Tampa and our South Tampa LGBTQIA+ Community. Kurt’s Place formally known as City Side, formally The Jungle, formally The Wet Spot, formally The Cove…CLOSED. The last LGBTQIA+ club has now left South Tampa.
This was known as the Gay Epicenter Tampa Neighborhood since the 1940’s. At one time on Kennedy Blvd was; The Old Plantation then Village Station, KIKIKI 3, The Annex, Margie’s, Metropolis, BJ’s, The Sahara, Rene’s, Cucujo’s, Jimmy Whites, Cabaret Club, The Gay Denny’s, Moodys Restaurant, and the original Tomes and Treasures. Our original PRIDE stores (the 1st of 11 stores over the last 30 years) MC Film next to UT, later 2nd one on Kennedy Blvd & Himes, across the street from the Metropolis.
Just South of Kennedy Blvd was; 421 Salon, Angel’s, Male Room, Baxter’s Lounge 1, 2 & 3, Carousel Club, Moody’s Restaurant & Bar, Tropic’s Restaurant, Annex Bar, Red Apple, Features Costumes, The Rainbow Room, Mike’s Pub, Rumors, the 2nd & 3rd Tomes and Treasures, Chuck & George’s LGBT Card Shop, Metropolitan Community Church of Tampa, the Tampa GLBT Community Center.
TODAY, Sorry but they are now all gone!
The closing of Kurt’s Place was surrounded by a lot of questions and drama being played out on Facebook. I am sure there was a lot of stress on all sides. I have worked for many years for Tampa LGBTQIA+ entrepreneur Kurt King.
One time I counted over 1,500+ shifts. I have been a part-time bartender most all of my life and have always said that all club owners are crazy. They need to be crazy to be in the Gay club business. Kurt was partner/owner in many Tampa clubs: including Baxter’s, Angels, Blue Jeans, The Copa 1 & 2, Chambers, Babylon, 5 Hamburger Mary’s & more.
Kurt was the very first owner to pay me on the clock. Before you always worked for $20 shift pay or tips only. Over the years I saw Kurt donate to everyone- personal & privately and all non-profits who asked. Kurt helped 100’s of people with rent, bills, and even paid for funerals. Then Mary’s BINGO started to raise many more than $1,000’s for events and charities. Employing 1,000’s people, DJ’s, staff, waiters, chefs, and entertainers. We wish Kurt nothing but the best in the future. Many others and I in our community, owe Kurt King a huge gratitude of THANK YOU!!!
Treat Yourself to a good laugh today! That Midwestern Mom will not only make you smile but her food looks sooooo good! In real life she is an opera singer who speaks 3 languages. AND has a Gay Son too. Don’t ya know!!!!
This has got to be one of the worst AI photos ever!!! The building is in the middle of the river, with building moved all over. People are saying it looks like a bowling trophy. LMAO
North Ybor area…joined VM Neighborhood association since it was hard getting this neighborhood together…Have to say there is a building focus in this area …changing so the city may have to focus here more. Well see
After almost a year away at the Gomaco Trolley Company for a major rebuild, Streetcar #430 has officially rolled back into Tampa—looking fresher than ever. The car will go through some testing/configuration over the next few weeks to get it ready to ride.
Let’s give #430 a warm welcome back!
