Remembering Ybor City Early 1980’s

Remembering Ybor City Early 1980’s
Last Saturday, I was taken back in time at the documentary film showing of “Living in America: 100 Years of Ybor” at HCC Performing Art Center. Why? The documentary filming by Gayla Jamison was the same time period as when we had just moved to Tampa in early 1980’s. Ybor City was a very different place then! A snapshot in time.
A multi- ethnic hometown suburban community made up of Cubans, Spanish, Italians, Sicilians, and Germans that was changed by the new I-4 corridor, demise of cigar companies, non interest in social clubs and a new open mindedness to America’s changing lifestyles. A mammoth attitude and residential change into where to live, work and to raise children. The growing older cigar rolling industry residents that resided here for generations stayed but the younger generation moved elsewhere. Across town, to newer suburbs and a loft left the cigar famous area. We recall boxing rinks on 7th Ave., a small fish market and sidewalk cafes. Coffee roasting was like an ambrosia to the nose. Small bodegas (shops) where still common in the 1980’s Ybor, where you went to get fresh Cuban bread, meat, sausages and produce. It was a continuance of European small boutique shopping.
David Audett, The Cuban Sandwich Event creator had a panel of locals and talked about the changes that they encountered over the years and what they remember growing up in Ybor City.
Today the recognizable buildings were the Columbian Restaurant, La Tropicana and the infamous El Goya Night Club (now Czar’s). Take in this private invested & city sponsored classic art exhibition. Thank You to the month long Art Event, The Cuban Sandwich Show.

You Can Not Make This Up!!

‘Don’t ask any question we have to get out side right now!!!!”
(13)
We have two very good Tampa friends Louis & Bob. We could write a book about them. Louis thinks out of the box like us. When they first moved to Tampa Louis was out at a club. He got to thinking and realized he had no idea how to get back to their new home. So he called a cab and gave the driver his new address. then pre paid the cab and said “You drive and I will follow you in my car!” LOL LOL One early morning Louis was up early. He pull the linens off the bed and popped them into the front loading washing machine on the second floor of their town home. Then he heard a noise coming from the washer. Quickly Louis said to Bob ‘Don’t ask any question we have to get out side right now!!!!” When Louis took the sheets off the bed he accidentally picked up the loaded revolver under his pillow is the bedroom. Don’t ask me why. The gun went thru the entire wash!!! Clean but needed much attention to. We promise to bring you more Louis & Bob stories soon.

BUY-Cott Not Boycott
Wednesday we were sitting at KFC on Kennedy Blvd. enjoying our chicken dinner. We looked around the room and there were many other GLBT people doing the same. We were not boycotting Chick-full-of-hate. We were buy-cotting at KFC who serves chicken with out hate. Several years ago when ronda storm’s hate took way our GLBT rights in Hillsborough County, there was a buy-cott started. We think it’s time to start one again!!! There are 2 great organizations to start buying at. The Tampa Bay Business Guild FMI  www.TBBG.Org and The GaYBOR District Coalition who’s membership is listed on www.GaYBOR.com.
This week local radio station  93.3 WFLZ has called for “Hamburger Mary’s Appreciation Day“! Awesome! Come on out and enjoy one of the “Hate-Free” Chicken Sandwiches (a portion of the proceeds go to an equality cause). This is GREAT!! We think it’s time for the GLBT Community to do this everyday! The next time you’re at a business without a GaYBOR Sticker or not a member of the TBBG ask them WHY NOT?
There is an old definition. What’s the definition of a Fag,/ Dyke?”  It’s that nice homosexual person who just walked out the door. Judging by the lines of people at Chic-full-of-hate this is more true here than we want to admit to.
Vacations & Family Reunions
One thing about August is that it is time to get away for a break after a long hard hot summer. And of course family get together’s and family reunions. I like so many went to Wisconsin to join my West’s Family members in our family reunion. I was greeted by being introduced to 6 newborn nephew and nieces. Thing at old family homesteads are funny and you sometimes notice how things have changed since you have been away. The the city, the food and people are different than where you presently  live in Florida (unless you are from Florida).
It was definitely hot with high 90’s in the daytime and cool low 50’s at night time. I was met up with 55 other family members for the long week long planned event. A trip tubing down the Crystal River with 3000 plus others, boat rides up and down the Wisconsin River, touring beer breweries and of course great super 3′ fresh salmon and smoked dinners we had caught from Lake Michigan.
We hope that your summer getaway was as good as ours.

A USF Snapshot Video
We are very disappointed in Judy Genshaft, USF President. Yesterday ABC 28 Action News caught her eating at chick-fil-H8. When asked why she was eating there her reply was the chicken salads are only 150 calories. I think this is very insensitive to GLBT students, staff, instructors & alumni. I think she should lead by example.

Visit GaYBOR/Ybor During the RNC
We have sat in dozens and dozens of meeting about the upcoming GOP Republican National Convention in Tampa. One thing that many have talked about it the economic impact on the community. In hosts cities before across America many of the small businesses close to the convention have reported very disappointing sales. In fact many even reported sales were below normal. How can this be you might ask yourself? The big problem is that the regulars stay away because of the perceived super large crowds. In reality the conventioneers will be bussed in and out of the Tampa downtown convention area. All the host hotels will have huge party’s and dining events.
The chances are that GaYBOR/Ybor City will be as busy as a parade night. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to say you were there. See you in GaYBOR/Ybor City!!!
.
Break Out of Your Box!
One of the funniest, wildest, unusual things we have ever done in a Gay Bar was going to a Professional Wrestling match at Bradley’s on 7th!!!! At first we were very reserved then in 10 minutes we were shouting and involved with the surroundings crowds!!! They actually install a full complete wrestling stage completely covering the dance floor!!! Everybody loves Mohamed, the door person at Bradley’s. On wrestling night he will become “BONECRUSHER MOHAMED STUDD”. A little bird told us that Carrie might be in the ring this time too!!! “Oh!!! MY!!!”. Treat yourself to a fun filled night this Tuesday, Aug, 14, 9 PM at Bradley’s on 7th.
