Bradley’s on 7th’s Charitable Turn-A-Bout

A fun annual Sunday night of clever disguise and make-up had the capacity crowd explode both in laughter and generosity. The Bradley’s on 7th bartenders and staff held a turn-a-bout cross dressing to the other side charity event. The 2 charitable recipients were A.S.A.P. (AIDS Services Association Pinellas) and Metro Wellness & Community Centers in Tampa Bay.
Starting out the night was one of GaYBOR/ Ybor City’s most recognized bartender, Mama who crossed over to do the outrageous singing leather icon, MEATLOAF.
The pre-hours of make-up, fittings, paddings and dressing had some of the customers guessing who was who. The high heals on the amateur masculine bartending guys were …. respectable!
Great Kudos on a great fun Benevolent Goodwill GLBT event, Bradley & staff!

People R Talking

It seems that residents and some area businessmen in Ybor City are more than a little upset with the new Hillsborough County Sheriffs office plans for 2 new parks to be located in Ybor City. The historic Ybor City district’s  Barrio Latino Commission voted 5-1 rejecting the added parks to the historic Ybor City district. More input was needed. The 1st new to be created park is for  9/11 Victims Park and 2nd park/ memorial for officers that have fallen in the line of law enforcement duty. The parks are right next to the newly relocated & approved local baseball legend Al Lopez  House for a National Baseball League Museum and 2nd house that was relocated for a newly created Sheriffs Dept Law Enforcement Museum on 19th Street and 9th Ave across from Centennial Park. Both buildings were recently moved to empty lot’s next to Centennial Park & the H.C. Sheriffs Dept. Operations office in Ybor City. It was a shock for sure from the Sheriffs office administrators.
“They were trying to fix an eyesore of a parking lot!” we were told.by a business owner on 7th Ave. There is more to come as the issue comes in front of Tampa City Council shortly…
Sheraton Hotel Riverwalk Sales manager, Paul Sparks celebrated a week long Blurrrthday. Happy wishes Paul. The overflow of the monthly Bear Soup Party will be relocating from the Social to Honey Pot on the 2nd Saturday each month. The over capacity popular Bear crowd forced the new move.
Not 1 or 2 but 3 film crews and production companies are shooting major movies and series TV shows in Ybor City this week and next 2 weeks thereafter. Our signed confidentiality statement says we can’t say anything until September 1! The word is out!!! A call for extras in shots will be on Craig’s List!  Boy, the food Sunday night we sampled by the caterers was awesome.
Remember the ‘Ybor Tree Murders’ from last November? 120 trees were cut down! Now without explanation it seems that a lot of the Palms in and around Ybor City and downtown have a wilt killing the palms that line many of our busy streets.
Lastly congrats to Ybor’s own Cuban Sandwich Winner 2 years in a row, Michele Faedo. She will be taking her crew to Las Vegas this November for the Sandwich Playoff. She was selected by Food.TV Network to be one of the celebrity chef sandwich contestants. What they don’t know is she makes the Best Stuffed Deviled Crab in America!

Obituary

Wayne Palmer, Owner of DT’s Bar in St. Pete
Dallas “Wayne” Palmer passed this week. The very first day I bartended at Grand Central Station on Central Ave in St. Petersburg Wayne walked in. He ordered a beer and then told me he has a “Permanent $1.00 key on the cash register.”
OMG He really did!!! Wayne told me that he had been coming to this bar for many years. When it came up for sale he purchased the club. Wayne named the bar DT’s. This stood for Dallas (his real first name)  & Turn. Thus DT’s was Dallas’s Turn to own the club. When Wayne sold the club to Grand Central Station there was a $1.00 beer clause in the contract. He left a special statement to be released after his death by his son Dave. . Here it is….
If you don’t already know, my father and friend, Dallas “Wayne” Palmer passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2013. He was 75 years old and had struggled to breathe for quite some time. He left some final words with instructions for me to send everybody. Here they are:

By the time you read this, I will be gone from this world.  Please do not grieve for me – I’d much rather you celebrate my long and enjoyable life by having a good time of your own making.  I just wanted you to know that I really enjoyed your company — some of you for longer than others – and wanted to thank you sincerely for your time spent with and for me.
We plan to honor his wishes on Saturday, July 27, 2013:
Hospice South County Community Service Center
3050 1st Avenue South
St. Petersburg, FL 33712
The service starts at 10:00 am and will be followed by a brunch. Dad was a long time volunteer so in lieu of flowers, please donate generously to: AIDS Service Association of Pinellas (ASAP).
Hope to see you Saturday,
Dave Palmer

You Can Not make This Up.

    The Bird Whisper’er of GaYBOR
We have all heard many stories about Ybor’s Bud & his birds. Many people say that chickens walk up to him as if to be talking with Bud.  His other half Jeffy says that many times Bud comes home with a chicken under his arm.  The birds sitting on his porch talking to all hours of the day with him. Some times Bud takes them into his bedroom and in the morning the birds are still there watching him. One day we were all sitting inside the Crow Bar in Ybor yakking with bartender/owner Bonnie.  The afternoon crowd had grown to a couple of dozen people chatting and enjoying a hot Ybor afternoon. A colorful pigeon flew into the bar thru an open door. The bird then tried to fly out but went into a closet by mistake. The next thing we know there is Bud with the bird in his hands. He said, “the poor little bird is scared because there is no sky above her.”
The bird actually looked like it was talking with Bud. Then Bud put the bird on his shoulder and together walked out the door! You just can not make this up!!
