The New Must See Movie
We just saw the movie “The Butler” I think we just found a new best favorite movie! Thinking back my very first favorite was “The Wizard of Oz” it was so Gay! (We just went to the limited release of the new 3-D version and it is the BEST EVER!!!) Then I fell in love with “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. We dressed and went over 100’s times!!!
On one of our first dates with Carrie we went and saw the french film, “La Cage Aux Folles”. part 2 & 3 were favorites too. Then came Bette Midler in “The Rose”. Who can forget the line “HIT Ouiser” in Steel Magnolias. We fell back in love with Brad Pitt in “Seven Years in Tibet”.
Every time Carrie drives the car he says, “Driving Miss Daisy!” Now comes a new favorite “The Butler” Many parts of it correctly describe what it’s also like growing up LGBT. Especially how older people remember what it was like. Sadly, what it really still is like to.
Once you see the film you will understand what “THE FACE” is. How very true today. If you do only one thing this weekend go & see “the Butler” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1327773/
Out & About Places
This week we went out to the former historic Fort Homer Hesterly Armory on Howard Ave. where the future Tampa Jewish Community Center & Federation South Campus is preparing for major renovations and expansion. It has a great structural history building rich in celebrity, musician, NWA wrestling matches, weddings, school graduations and National Presidential event.
Some of the many performing groups included half-naked Jim Morrison & The Doors, REO Speedwagon, Blue Oyster Cult, Pink Floyd, Nat King Cole, legendary Slim Whitman and infamous ‘King of Rock & Roll’, Elvis Presley sang at the armory 5 times! Not withstanding in Nov.1963, 4 days before being assassinated, President John F. Kennedy gave the keynote address at the Florida Chamber of Commerce Convention. The late Rev Martin Luther King had also given a speech at the magnificent historic military building.
The former Florida State Armory was re-named and dedicated Ft Homer Hesterly Armory the day after Pearl Harbor in 1941. Hesterly was another famed military officer and businessman from Tampa. The Florida National Guard & U.S. Army Reserves units relocated from this esteem military fort in 2004.
The Jewish Community Center is starting a $16 mil capital campaign in early 2014. In the works for the renovated art deco building is a portion leased by City of Tampa for an Arts & Visual Arts Center replacing the old Hyde Park Art Studios. Also a collaboration with USF and Tampa General Hospital are planning a 5,000 s/f Medical & Wellness Center. New additions will include an outdoor aquatic center, fitness center and new restaurant with plenty of parking.
The newly renovated center has a proposed opening date in mid 2015.
Bears On 2 Levels
A huge Bear Night Out Party Saturday used both levels at The Social Club to hold the overwhelming number of guys that came from as far away as Miami, Orlando and Atlanta to the event! The packed club quarters and had to stay in line crowd weren’t anything in a hibernating state. They were out for the fun and adventure.
Another Great Bear Getaway in Tampa is in the planning stages for a future date. The super friendly Bear guys get togethers always put a smile on your face.
BTW: Orlando’s Bear Bash starts this Thursday and runs thru Sept 29th. The annual event attracts Bears from around the world to party down, intermingle with new vendors and just have fun.
NEW Tampa Baseball Museum Gets Deed
In a very overcast skies, the Dept of Transportation Monday gave the deed of the famed Al Lopez House to the City of Tampa that then transferred to the Ybor City Museum Society. Al Lopez was a famous Tampa & Yborite who was the first Tampa native to be signed into the Major Baseball League and was also the first Hall of Fame player from Tampa.
The new Tampa Baseball Museum is next to Centennial Park and also the future Law Enforcement Museum which will be housed in a bungalow house next door to the Al Lopez house on 19th Street in Ybor City.
The many exhibits will be featuring exhibits and articles from The National Baseball League. Also artifacts, clothing and articles from past Tampa baseball teams, including Major Leagues teams, area Semi-Pro teams, Cigar Factory Baseball teams, the Negro Baseball League, High Schools and College teams from Tampa Bay!
The ceremony on Monday soon had pouring rain clouds. Attending were a number of local officials including Tampa City Councilman Charlie Miranda, County Commissioner Kevin Beckner, former Councilwoman Mary Alvarez and husband banker Manny, Ybor City Manager Vince Pardo and Y.C. Museum Society President Chantal Hevia.
“May the construction begin was heard throughout the crowd!”
A spring date is tentative for the new Tampa Baseball Museums opening.
You Can Not Make This Up.
We are very lucky to have good friends in Ybor that have been here for many years. One of the fun stories we were told was about the former building that was next to the Honey Pot today. It was a famous photo studio and the home of the “Burgert Brothers Photography”. Many of their photos live on today in the historic archives including the special collection at USF and the Tampa Bay History Museum.
Any way back to the building. After the Burgert Brother moved out, the building remained empty for many years. The building on the other side had been torn down. The dilapidated Burgert buildings roof collapsed and started to lean very badly. It became the joke of may locals. There was even a pool betting on when it would fall down. Then on Sunday at 2 AM the building started to fall over. The phones started to ring out all over Ybor City, the building was falling down!!! At this time antique bricks were very valuable.
People came with wheel borrows, trucks & pickups to pick up the bricks. By noon that day the building was almost gone. Every brick was stolen!! In the photo on the right side you will notice the windows of the Honey Pot today.
