Dear Ybor City Community Advisory Council Members:
On Thursday, June 5th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. the Ybor City Campus President’s Community Advisory Council will hold its summer meeting in the Performing Arts Building’s Studio Theatre. There will be short performances by students in our Drama and Dance programs.
The Council is designed to enhance open dialogue between the campus administration and the community-at-large and will focus on how the campus can support the community and how the community can support the campus. The meeting will include a tour of the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Buildings. An agenda will follow closer to the meeting date as well as parking information.

Green Fest & Sunny Spring Skies
Friends of Plant Park’s “Annual GreenFest” had a tremendous turnout of professional and weekend landscapes. Hundreds of landscaping vendors showcased there new hybrid plants, natural Florida native plants, vegetable seedling plants and great landscaping tips for all level of outdoor landscapers . The annual spring event drew thousands to University of Tampa’s Plant Park, again did a great job of educating and selling to outdoor homeowners.
The line-up of guest speakers included Hillsborough County Extension Services plant experts and regional Master Gardeners. Included were presentations and classes by Master Landscapers; Dooryard Fruit by Jim Hark, Butterfly Gardening with Nicole Pinson, Caladium by Cynthia Glover and Rain Barrels by Lynn Barber were a few of the noted guest speakers.
The spacious UT grounds had vendors selling sharpening garden tools, worm gardens, Butterfly shrubs, water falls for backyards and the many orchid growers. The bright plant colors and the plant assortments had novice landscapers pull wagons full of trees, plants and shrubs heading to their new homes. www.friendsofplantpark.com
George Sheldon , Florida Attorney General Campaign
Greeting new potential voters at King Corona’s Meet & Greet in Ybor City was George Sheldon running for Florida’s top spot as Attorney General. He is off and running to compete in defeating Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Sheldon’s political career began in 1969, when he was a legislative aide for state senator and future governor Reubin Askew. Sheldon was a state representative in the Tampa area from 1974 to 1982, before running against Congressman Michael Bilirakis. Sheldon would serve in private practice until 1999, when he became Deputy Attorney General for Central Florida under Attorney General Bob Butterworth. In 2003, he assumed the post of Associate Dean at St Thomas Law School; and in 2008, Sheldon became the Secretary of the Florida Department of Children and Families under governor Charlie Christ. While at Florida DCF, Sheldon played a key role in relief efforts for refugees from Haiti’s 2010 earthquake. He was also recognized by a national child welfare coalition as leading the “largest transformation of an American child welfare system in recent decades, turning Florida from the national example of failure into, relatively speaking, a leader in doing child welfare right.” Sheldon would later become the Acting Assistant Secretary for the federal Administration for Children and Families in the United States Department of Health and Human Services from 2011 to 2013.
Talking with a group of us at the get together, stated that he is and has been in favor of Florida Equal Marriage and Gay Adoption Rights. While a member of the Florida House, he stood up against the crusading Anita Bryant shenanigans about Gay Adoption in the 1970’s.
Hillsborough Comm College’s International Festival Day
For the past 16 years HCC Ybor City Campus has celebrated International Festival Day. This day is special for the students, staff and faculty members from all over the world. Each participating country flag holder is from their native land. A crowded courtyard of students and faculty watched the 30 country flag procession.
The courtyard at the Student Services Building staged a great performance. A sampling of the native dishes of some of the countries was also provided. National culinary menu for the day included Chicken, Black Beans & Yellow Rice, Chicken Kabobs and from India “Naan” bread.
Accompanying the festive international outdoor flair was members of HCC student band playing a variety of the countries ethnic music.
Femmes & Follies, Femmes For a Cause Show
The monthly humorous re-incarnated burlesque show, Femmes For A Cause at the Social on Sunday had the girls helping out Hillsborough area pets. The large 1920 dressed crowd witnessed 1920’s follies and adult entertainment with the first class all girlie production. Featuring the mischievous Katie James, sexy Ivy Les Vixens, singing sensation Mary Contrary and naughty girl & pyro-maniac Mayven Misbehavin. Musical stylings by Von Garden.
The music was prohibition era, the setting was candle light sheik and the specialty drinks were intoxicating. This months benefit charity venue was for mans best friend, Pets! The Suncoast Animal League.

‘2014 Entertainer of the Year’ Competition
The Regional pageant for the nationwide 2014 Entertainer of the Year Competition had a wide variety of talent and charm. The 2 divisions had class action Illusion Drag Talent and the Boys Competition. The Honey Pot hosted the fierce regional competition with winners competing in the National Entertainer of the Year and the Mr. Entertainer of the Year in Louisville, Ky.
The funny stylish clothed performing characters had the crowd standing with laughter and essence. Some of the outfits were pure stunning and very original with great props!
The winning Tampa Bay regional stars that won the regional EOY was Miss Trinity Taylor & Winning Mr, Entertainer of the Year from Washington, D.C. was Matthew Kelly.

Dr. Ben Carson, U.S. Conservative’s Presidential Choice?
Dr. Ben Carson, neurosurgeon at famed John Hopkins University maybe a future name to recon with. Unfamiliar with the name? His name has come up for being a high contender on the 2016 upcoming Conservative Tea Party Presidential ballot. A strong speaker with his moral judgement stating ” homosexuality.
On the Fox TV Network’s, Sean Hannity Show he compared “homosexuality with pedophilia and bestiality.” So what is new in the ol’ GOP Party these days? Super conservative PAC’s have a campaign coffer of over $3 million start for him to run for president in 2016.
He also recently said, “it seems God is calling me to run.” And at the recent CPAC meeting in March stated, “Gays…don’t get extra rights.”
Maybe a conservative contender or maybe not? Just wanting to keep you informed……
You Can Not Make this Up.
For many years we have the pleasure of knowing and working with’ Miss Stephanie Shippae’. Every time we are with her she will do something that cracks everybody up laughing. One Sunday afternoon Stephanie had just finished an afternoon show at Hamburger Mary’s GaYBOR. Out on the balcony on a beautiful day she was trying to unwind a little. When all of a sudden she noticed there was a big crowd starting to form on the sidewalk below. Dressed in a beautiful blue rhinestone dress with a cut that went down past her belly button and jewelry to match. In classic form Stephanie let out her signature saying… “HEY EVERYBODY!!!” and gave the crowd a big 180 degree wave.
One spunky blue hair senior citizen hit her clueless husband and pointed up to the balcony. Stephanie cracked a big and said, “I bet you can’t see this at Ruth Eckard Hall!!”
A group of young people all dressed alike were waving at Stephanie. The next thing we now they are all on the HM balcony having photos taken with Shephanie…… HEY EVERYBODY!!!
