A stunning comedy about the redemptive power of friendship

Superior Donuts getting rave reviews!!!!!Rave reviews for Stageworks’ production of Superior Donuts, now through October 26.

A stellar cast leads us through an extraordinary journey, in this stunning new comedy from the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of August: Osage County.

Jim Wicker makes you cry, Richard Coppinger makes you laugh, and Blake High senior Travis Brown makes you sizzle with an electrifying performance that everyone is talking about.

This play takes every stereotype you know, and turns them upside down. You’ll root for timid police officer Roxanne Fay, her Trekkie partner Joshua Goff, and the wild homeless woman portrayed by Dawn Truax. Peter Konowicz and Michael Mekus are eerily compelling gangsters, and Tim Guerierri surprises as a guy who’s not your standard Russian goon. Letts’ provocative comedy turns up the heat on the challenges of embracing the past and the redemptive power of friendship.

Una Voce
Notes
October 2014

Greetings to you and yours!

I hope you spent a delightful summer getting together with family and friends.  The sweltering Tampa heat has not discouraged Una Voce from looking ahead to our Holiday 2014 concert, entitled Broadway Lights, Holiday Nights!  We’ve been preparing all summer, selecting music and writing the script, so that things were in place when our rehearsals started up again in August.  Singing, “Let It Snow” when it’s 95 degrees in the shade is certainly a little confusing, but that’s Florida!

After the run of the Broadway Lights, Holiday Nights performances, Una Voce will be saying good-bye to Artistic Director Justin Havard, I am sad to report.  The decision to leave the Chorale was Justin’s to make; we wish him the very best in his future musical endeavors.

Una Voce recently updated its mission statement to proudly declare: We Celebrate the Inherent Dignity of All People through Excellence in Men’s Choral Music. To that end, the Chorale welcomes talented, passionate individuals with creative vision and the leadership skills necessary to bring those visions to the stage to apply.

The full job description and application instructions can be found on our website

DISHING with Mark & Carrie 10-07-14

Road Trip with Mark & Carrie
Day 1: To Charleston, South Carolina
The car was packed with all the  essential road trip supplies big fluffy pillow, corn nuts, beef jerky & Gator Ade. Miss Amber was at her favorite Aunties home, Judy & Lee in St. Pete.. It was off to explore America’s infamous historic southern city, Charleston. The fun easy interstate 8 hours drive took us across the state of Florida thru the famous speed trap city of Waldo. Mark made sure lead foot Carrie slowed way down there.  Then it was right up I-95 to tonight’s destination of Charleston, SC.
Our quaint hotel, The Kings Courtyard Inn www.charminginns.com , was in the Historic Peninsula area right down town in Charleston. The Inn was an 1850 era inn full of welcoming southern hospitality and was charming & very well preserved. The room that we stayed was great with a large 3rd floor 2 bedroom suite with spacious view of the historic district, working fireplaces, wide planked floors and even a Charleston 4 poster lace canopy bed! It came with a step ladder to climb onto the bed. Very preserving antebellum southern hospitality.
After a quick refresh it was out to explore the central city historic Market Place for an early dinner. The hotel is on the cusp of all the new top selling national and boutique stores. We walked the very narrow streets to the historic market place. Plants of all sorts were in front of most all the businesses doorways. We felt proud to search out some of the most monumental sites in United States history.  We witnessed the very old 200 year old buildings, historic confederate grounds and passed great landmarks. The Daughters of the Confederacy Building was one of great interest at the beginnings of the often called the unofficial ‘Slave Market!’
We started with a great list of fine restaurants to try given to us by the hotels concierge. Yes, Mark had to have Southern Shrimp & Grits for dinner! Then we were off to Dudley’s Bar  http://www.dudleysonann.com . It is one of two LGBT bars in Charleston. The other is Pantheon Club, a large dance club and drag show bar open on weekends. Dudley’s was a very fun local bar hangout. The decor was art deco with an interesting back bar that was salvaged from a downtown cemetery.  There were 6 other people inside and a group outside at the sidewalk tables. It truly was a gorgeous night to be out walking. We were very lucky to meet bartender Toby, a local who grew up in Charleston moved away and now was back.  Charleston is the host to the states SC Annual LGBT  Pride Festival. With this in mind we were surprised of the lack of Gayness. Toby agreed and commented that with the “general acceptance of Gays & Lesbians comes a reduced feeling of community.”
I commented to Mark saying this early American city was, “A destiny quest of ambience for romance that enhances the heart, mind & Soul!”
A liberal cut crystal decanter of area Sherry and platter of assorted cheeses were provided to us which they say is a Charleston tradition nightcap and added the evenings final touch in visiting this early heritage landmark.
Day 2: Exploring Charleston
After a quick handmade breakfast it was off for a tour Southern Plantations and our choice was the famous Middleton Place Plantation www.MiddletonPlace,org .This is the oldest landscape gardens in America. They are a family of over 13 owned large plantations. The very wealthy Middleton family memebers were in all the American wars. After becoming a colony, Henry Middleton, President of the First Continental Congress signed the  Declaration of Independence. Years later Henry Middleton, (Jr) took the side of the South in the American Civil War. After the war their rice plantation home was burned down by the union soldiers. It is hard to believe that rice was once a billion dollar export industry in the Carolinas. The manicured lawns and landscaped gardens on the 200 acre plantation are exquisite.
Back into town for and afternoon horse carriage street tour of historic Charleston. Looking out over the water you can see Fort Sumter National Monument. www.nps.gov/fosu . This was the location & start of the American Civil War.  Where the first shots were fired. This was the inspiration for our national anthem.
At the time of the American Revolution, Charleston was the capital of Carolina. It’s boarders were to the north,  the Virginia River, to the south the Spanish Florida, and was east to west from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans.
The British said in the Revolutionary War that if Charleston would fall then the entire South would fall. We all know that didn’t turn out.
It was an early bright orange sky evening dinner at the world famous Hyman’s Seafood Restaurant www.hymanseafood.com . We sat were a hundred years of celebrities partook in the delicious fresh caught provisions.  In Charleston, the sidewalks are rolled up at 6 PM and there really wasn’t much to do at night. Charleston is one of those places fun to visit one time, but not again. There is a feel here that they are still fighting the Civil War and that they didn’t lose.
There was an awkward feeling here by us for the lack of African American’s visibility in the downtown’s busy working crowds.

Day 3: Savannah, Georgia Here We Come.

Just a two hour comfortable drive south is Savannah, GA. This was our main destination. Along the side roads we traveled we stopped at small roadside produce & gift stands. Have you ever tried homemade Peach Cider?
We have been here several times and always have a wonderful time. We were in town for our niece Meagan’s Wedding. More details to come on day 4. Our sister made reservations at the nationally famous award winning B&B,  1895 Inn  www.the1895inn.net , a Victorian Bed & Breakfast. Located with in walking distance to everything. The 4 story brick stone B&B is owned by a great gay personable couple, Bob & Ed and is over seen by their pet dog, Dudley the King of the Castle. The well adorned historic specific designed bedrooms are awesome and ours super  comfortable. Early morning handmade breakfast brunch & homemade condiments were divine. Baked stuffed Ricotta French Toast with generous amounts of freshly whipped cream & honey drizzled over 5 berries, southern hardwood smoked bacon & hand squeezed orange juice was plentiful. Each day a different set of china is used as well as one of the 20 patterns of silver. Most elegant. There isn’t any loss of great southern hospitality here, It was beyond excellent.
It is easy to see what it’s named as one of the top B&B in America. We recommend this be your 1st pick of a place to stay when visiting Savannah. After a walking tour past the home from the infamous movie, “In the Garden of Good & Evil” it was on to the Savannah’s historic famed River Walk for cocktails.
That night we had dinner with the Bride & Groom. We had made Bride’s SECURITY T-Shirts for the special night outing. LOL
See Day 4 in “You Can Not Make this Up!”

Day 5: Satellite Beach, FL

After a brunch with the family we headed south. Back on to I-95 south just 5 hours south is Satellite Beach Florida next to the Kennedy Space Center. We are lucky to have family here. My sisters favorite Greek restaurant is here, NIKI’S Rainbow Restaurant www.nikisrainbowrestaurant.com . If you are ever anywhere in the area this a must do. This is truly authentic Greek cooking destination.
We stayed up late into the night catching up on the family news.
Day 6: Home to Tampa.
The short drive of 2 1/2 hours and we were back home in Tampa.  1,024 miles behind us and memories that will live a life time.

Day 4: The Wedding
Our beautiful niece, Miss Meagan and her future military husband, Chris, met and live in Savannah, the proclaimed “Hostess City of the South.” They chose a Savannah River boat for their wedding. It was on the beautiful Georgia Queen paddle wheel boat http://www.savannahriverboat.com/ . The wedding theme was “1920’s Prohibition.” The guests all dressed in ’20’s period flapper” outfits. Our outfits came from La France  https://www.facebook.com/lafranceybor in GaYBOR of course!
The beautiful Southern Bride wore a traditional white wedding dress for the ceremony with handmade lace veil from Sheila in Minnesota. Later she then changed into a b/w flapper dress for the reception/dinner. We were asked to bring our gold frame for some fun photos.
Our new nephew Chris is an U.S. Army Ranger with a fun sense of humor. Our niece told us to be prepared for a Wild Wedding service but nothing could have prepared us for what happened next!!!!! The ceremony was performed by the army base Chaplin. In the service where he said “Does any body object to this marriage, speak now or forever hold your peace”, a, person in the audience stood up and said “Meagan you can do so much better than Chris….”
Just then the groom pulls out a gun from his tuxedo and shoots the guy! The family and friends were all in shock! We were docked next to the busy River Walk with the many hotels, restaurants on the shoreline. Fake blood shot out of his chest and back as he fell to the floor. The groomsmen dragged the guy out by his arms down the bridal center isle! The bride then pulled a flask from her garter belt, both toasted each other and took a drink. Then the wedding proceeded. LOL!!! ( The wedding couple had this all rehearsed &  filmed. We will be sure to share the video with our readers soon).
A cocktail hour followed the wedding then a dinner all onboard the boat. The Night of surprises was not over yet! The couple 1st dance started. The groom walked down one side and the bride down the other side. They stopped and met in the center of the boats dance floor. The bride unwrapped her rose bridal bouquet then roses all fell on the floor. The groom picked up one rose as they danced the Tango!!! Later, we were told that they were at dance classes practicing for months. Encore… Encore!
It was like a scene out of a movie!!!  Who knew they could dance so well together. Under a sky full of stars the boat re-docked with the Savannah River Walk as a back drop. It was truly one of most beautiful and fun wedding we have ever been to.
Congratulation to the new niece/nephew married couple Meagan & Chris!!!
