Blind Artist Brings Artistic Vision to Tampa

Artist Stephen Handschu is not your typical sculptor. Born 95% blind, his parents encouraged their young son to do what was in his heart. Against much adversity, they fought against the machine that would label their son “disabled” and in doing so, molded a self-made, determined man that has achieved more in his lifetime than most able bodied individuals. Adeptly skilled with tools most sighted people would find daunting, Handschu uses his hands, blades and power tools to bring his visions to life.
Currently, Handschu can be found sharing his love of the art of sculpture with students, young and old at the Tampa Jewish Community Center. Nurturing inspiration first through a clay model, then step by step instruction on carving in alabaster, Handschu helps open a window of creative inspiration in every students being.
Classes begin October 12, 2015 (Monday and Friday 10AM-12PM)
8 (2-hour sessions) $80 for Members/$95 for Non-Members (plus $35 per stone used)

Small Art, BIG Cause and Rosenquist at FIVE by FIVE

FIVE by FIVE 2015 returns for its fourth year and takes over the first floor of the Tampa Museum of Art on Oct. 16. Nearly 600 pieces of 5”x5” art donated by 395 artists in 17 states and eight other countries will fill the main atrium. During the evening live performances in music, dance, theatre and spoken word will take place in the first floor pop-up club. NEW this year is a limited edition raffle for a signed James Rosenquist work.
Tampa, FL – FIVE by FIVE 2015, a multi-dimensional celebration of the arts, returns to the Tampa Museum of Art on Friday, Oct. 16, 8-11 pm. The fourth annual event, presented by the Arts Council of Hillsborough County, includes dynamic performances by professional musicians, actors, poets and dancers throughout the evening, as well as an international exhibition of artwork. It is the largest single night event held at the museum, attracting more than 900 art enthusiasts last year.
New this year is a limited edition raffle for a signed James Rosenquist print, The Meteor Hits Picasso’s Bed. The work is #12 of only 28 artist proofs and was donated by the artist in support of the Arts Council’s programs that assist professional and emerging artists. Tickets are available on the night of the event only. Proceeds benefit the Arts Council’s work with individual artists.
Performances will again be in the event’s pop-up club where acoustics are better and audiences have a more intimate experience with area performers. Among the performers in the Oct. 16 evening are the Kuumba Dancers & Drummers, Lucha Libro Tampa Bay, Monday Monday tribute band, writer Sasenarine Persaud, dancers from Shoes at the Door, SoHo Indigo jazz and Yellowish Blue. Nearly 600 pieces of art will be in the exhibition and include painting, drawing, etching, wood sculpture, metal sculpture, clay, mosaic, glass, metal, photography, fabric, mixed media and more. In addition to the contributions of work from hundreds of Bay area artists, artwork this year came from the Republic of Armenia, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Lithuania, Malta, Spain and the UK, as well as from 17 states across the nation.
Buyers of art pick work, which are displayed without attribution, for $25 each — gambling on getting a piece by an established artist or just a cool collectible. The artist’s names are kept secret and revealed to the buyer when purchased. Proceeds from art sales support programs for individual artists from the Arts Council.
Admission tickets can be purchased before the event through the Tampa Museum of Art. The $10 admission benefits the museum. Museum members are admitted free. FIVE by FIVE 2015 attendees may also visit the museum’s XTO+J-C: Christo and Jeanne-Claude featuring works from the bequest of David C. Copley and organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

Fall has Arrived !!
Another GLBT Break Thru; Brevard County’s 1st GLBT Parade
On any type of event planning it takes a commitment to achieve the goal. The first Space Coast Pride GLBT Parade in Melbourne had president Lexi Wright going in all directions. Her group of more than a dozen exceeded her dreams.
They included a Pride Vendor Festival, starting a Gay Pride Parade which included Grand Marshals in politics, gay former U.S. Congressman Barney Frank, co-counsel to Florida’s marriage equality lawsuit attorney Mary Meeks, her partner and award winning documentary filmmaker Vicki Nantz and United States Alliance shuttle engineer, Sabrina Taraboletti, a transgender woman who testified about discrimination before the U.S. Congress. The day long event had thousands attending and taking in entertainment on 2 stages in the Eau Gallie Arts District. The previous Friday night had a Kick Off VIP reception on the beach bar and restaurant. At the event a handful of protesters were marching along side the streets.
The parade was covered by a lot of the area and Orlando media. The huge honored flag was presented on the street in a majestic, precision moment. Over 60 people carried the 100′ section through the mile long parade. Tears were flowing by the inner proudness of the carrying volunteer crew. An honor guard and drum corp preceded the 8 colored Gay flag that has been to over 142 countries. Flying filming drones were sharing the camera spotlights from an overhead view.
Tampa Pride Board members John & Nancy Desmond were in the inaugural parade right in front of the historic Key West Rainbow Pride Flag. Carrie West manned the festival booth with niece Natalie and was touched by all the hundreds of people stopping by the festival booth and said they attended Tampa’s Re kindled Gay Pride Parade and Festival last spring.
” This is a new partner of the I-4 Corridor of Prides,” said Carrie. “They include St. Pete Pride, Tampa Pride, Lakeland Pride, COWP Orlando and Space Coast Pride in Melbourne.”
After the parade was over and the festival was slowing down, the former gay activist Grand Marshal Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank came over to the Tampa Pride booth and sat down and had a few refreshments. He was greeted by hundreds of afternoon festival goers. The event was so busy that the many vendors ran out of soda and water.
” Oh yes he talked politics to one and all in a gratifying voice.” Carrie commented. “Barney has a very distinguished happy laugh.” During his 45 minute stay he was genuinely wonderful to each and everyone.
The day was a proud GLBT moment to Florida, Florida’s East Coast and to the Board of Space Coast Pride. Space Coast Pride had a great 3 day Festival event. Watch out for next years event! www.spacecoastpride.org

Congratulations to the Ritz Ybor & Big City Events. The Sushi Battle was over the top FUN!!! 12 local Sushi Restaurants battled it out for the title. The Judges Choice winner was “Pisces Sushi and Global Bistro.” The Peoples Choice winner’s was “Rain Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar.”
The place was packed with reverend sushiers! Old and young the night was all about great eye candy Sushi and its surrounding nexus. There were over a dozen Saki distributors in the front bar areas giving out samplings. They were all delicious. Who would think of a watermelon /citrus saki?
The variety of music components that entertained the group was addictive. A super variety of charming expenditure and placement to the far east.

Today’s Gay Bars
Recently there has been talk that the “Gay Bars” are now a thing of the past! That with acceptance into the inclusion of everyday bars, they will all soon to be gone. We have a question…. Are the US Military welcomed in every mainstream bar & club in the US? Of course the answer is YES. So why then in every town are there “VFW” and “American Legions”?
People with similar things in common like to stick together for many reasons. When our Vets want to fund raise for their cause, the first place they go is to their clubs. When the LGBT Community was to fundraise, it’s the LGBT Clubs they go to first.
There will always be LGBT Clubs in American. Just say’n.

You Just Can Not Make This Up
One hot Saturday night there was a group of High School teenagers up to no good in Central Ybor in Ybor City. The mischievous group approached the wrong Grandmother there. They aggressively asked her for money. After repeatedly saying NO, the grandmother had enough of this nonsense. She calmly reached into her huge purse and pulled out….. a can of Bear Mace.
She then preceded to mace them all aggressively in the face. The kids ran to the local convenience store and started to pour milk into their eyes making quite the commotion. The police came and arrested all of them.
We guess they will not mess with a Grandmother again!!!!

“Tampa International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival”
Tampa’s 16th Annual International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival has been bringing in record crowds to the Tampa Theatre and Hyde Park’s Sunrise Cinema. At the Premier Gala, Performances by America’s singing Dragapella Group, the Kinsey Sicks frocked the crowd in the Outdoors Plaza! The few *#+* demonstrators around the street corners with the bullhorns didn’t damper any spirits what so ever. If anything it showed the cohesiveness needed in our community. All the films are wonderful and Florida Premiere showings include “Fish Can’t Fly”,” Adam & Steve”, ” A Year Without Love” & ” The Nomi Song.”
