GLSEN Conference

The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network held a weekend conference in Tampa last weekend. The opening ceremony guest speaker was Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner. A round table of educators, social workers and students from around mid Florida gathered and broke up into responsive education GLBT issue forums.

Educator, local GLSEN official and former teacher, Frank Roder helped in getting the conference together with area social & health organizations, PFLAG, TAMPA PRIDE, the City of Tampa, Hillsborough County and Metro Wellness & Community Centers.

The organizations mission is to recognize, fight and end anti-gay bulling in the K-12 school systems across America.

9 daylong topics of discussion included transgender awareness led by Ashley Brundage, the higher rate of STD’s/ HIV, Human/ children sex trafficking by Hillsborough Sheriffs Dept, drug awareness in social groups, social media and more all informing educators and social workers of GLBT concerns.

Saturday Night

On Saturday May 14th, Liquid Lounge will be hosting the official after party and Meet & Greet for the Tampa Bay International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (TIGLFF) where 50% of all door proceeds will go to support TIGLFF. Director Rob Williams and some of the film cast will be joining us for the US SNEAK PREVIEW of Shared Rooms. The film is a new romantic comedy feature film that brings together three interrelated tales of gay men seeking family, love and sex during the holiday season.

SHARED ROOMS explores the meaning of home and family through three interrelated stories of gay men finding connections during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day – a married couple who take in a teenage relative who was kicked out of his home after his parents discovered he was gay; a pair of roommates forced to share a bed for the week, much to the delight (and horror) of the one harboring a secret crush on the other; and two men looking for a quick hookup who end up finding a much stronger connection.
