One House Down, by Gianna Russo

The candid poems in Gianna Russo’s One House Down are grounded in experiences of ambivalence and oneness, not unlike those we sometimes find in true love. Russo ruminates on the past and scrutinizes the present in her hometown of Tampa with honest affection, concern, anger and delight. She asks an essential question: How can we treasure a place whose history and values have sometimes supported injustice? And if those wrongs are still evident today—then what? With family roots in Tampa that go back over a century, Russo skillfully pursues an answer in these inventive, surprising poems.

You Just Can Not Make This Up!!!
One day a young group of 20ish South Tampa girls came to the balcony at Mary’s. Of course no one knew what to drink and were being a hand full. The last girl asked for a Corona beer. We were out and this is something that we really should have had. I told her that I would run and get it for her. Now as many of you know the balcony was over the side walk on 7th Ave. To get more beer I had to climb 8 steps, walk across the dining room, then thru the kitchen, thru the elevator shaft. The across the kitchen next door to the very north end on 8th Ave. 1 full block away. Turn around and do it all around again, back to 7th Ave. This is a 2 block run with stairs!!!! I gave her the beer and she took one sip tossed her hair and said “It’s not cold enough, what else can you make?” I pulled a napkin and handed it to her and said “here there is something in your hair.” She ran out with a fake scream. LOL

Teen Coming-of-Age Story Next in LGBTQ Film Series
Contact: Gulfport Public Library; (727) 893-1074
GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, February 14 with an exciting film in which a boy finds acceptance and support among fellow trans and LGBTQ in the spirit-lifting weekly gatherings known as “Saturday Church.” The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month.
Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming film titles in general press releases. But feel free to call the Library at (727) 893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series. Or find titles and more information online: www.mygulfport.us/lgbtq-resources.
About the February 14 film: In this 2017 release, Ulysses is a shy and effeminate boy who finds himself coping with new responsibilities as man of the house after the death of his father. Living alongside his mother, younger brother, and conservative aunt, Ulysses is also struggling with questions about his gender identity. He finds an escape by creating a vivid world of fantasy filled with dance and music. Ulysses’ journey takes a turn for the better when he discovers a vibrant transgender community, who take him to “Saturday Church,” a program for LGBTQ youth. A winner of numerous LGBTQ film festival awards from across the country, and accolades for young actor Luka Kain portraying Ulysses. (Not Rated)
Save the date, Thursday March 14, for the next film in the series. After Cameron Post (Chloë Grace Moretz) is caught with another girl in the back seat of a car on prom night, she is quickly shipped off to a conversion therapy center that treats teens “struggling with same-sex attraction.” At the facility, Cameron is subjected to outlandish discipline, dubious “de-gaying” methods, and earnest Christian rock songs, but this unusual setting also provides her with an unlikely gay community. For the first time, Cameron connects with peers, and she’s able to find her place among fellow outcasts. Directed by Desiree Akhavan. “Loaded with terrific performances all around.” (Toronto Star) Winner of the 2018 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Films. (Not Rated)
Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
The LGBTQ Resource Center is a project of the non-profit Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Public Library. The Resource Center provides collections, services and events throughout the year to the local LGBTQ community, its friends and family. Find out more about the Resource Center, the Circle of Friends and the Library on the web at www.mygulfport.us/gpl or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GulfportLibraryFL. Our Weeks Distinguished Community Person

“DISHING With MARK & CARRIE” is Proud to Inform our readership of a very Special Person doing something extraordinary that is more humanitarian but Specially noted in our LGBTA community. The individual is very dear and caring. A married wife with a fun loving husband, mother of 2 children and grandmother to 2 laughing super natured loving grandkids.
Her objectives were mixed as a teenager as to what field to pursue in post high school education studies. Her choice was the field of Law Enforcement attending college in a mid size Wisconsin city for her specialty degree.
Knowing her so well of her partying days, crazy nature, loving kindred spirit,, family instilled faith, work ethic and humor. I know all about her because she is Mark & Carrie’s little sister, Merridee “West” Trzebiatowski.
Merridee (named after our father Merrill) worked after graduation inside store security at a Midwest dept store for years. Then moved onto working with the State of Wisconsin in government service. She ventured into politics, political activism, parenting, school activities and being hockey parents travelling all over the Midwest with their son, Westley.
She was missing something. It was her inner spiritual being and wanting to further her life by becoming a preacher.
She achieved her Theological degree inspirations while still working for the state. On the side and when available she has led our large family in spiritual moments. She has been asked by many to perform weddings, baptisms, celebrations, house blessings and for funerals. But this is where she is really a stand out champ!
Merridee was asked by a hometown funeral home director if she could perform a gay funeral from an out of the area same sex partners funeral? She had never done anything like this. She thought about it but readily agreed to do it. She has 2 gay brothers and 2 lesbian nieces. She was asked because of her kindness that the funeral home director saw in her devotion at another Celebration of Life service she led. None of the other city church ministers dared to take on this gay deed in January 2019!
She then found out that the young man that had deceased was for years an up and coming young celebrity and an assistant to Ralph Lauren. Not knowing anything about the deceased young man, she met with his partner to find out more about him, times together, their committed love for one another, work details to share for the funeral service.
Unexpectedly, hundreds flew in from around the world to come and pay respect to their friend, associate and the loving partner at the small city funeral home. More than one could ever expect, Merridee expressed the loving heart loss, their relationship, mutual memorable experiences, his devotion for work and his sharing life partner. Her expression of both empathy and sympathy came through to make the whole audience be emotional and tearful.
Thank You to our Distinguished little sister, Merridee for your unconditional accepting ways and love. And above that, THANK YOU for your commitment to our hometown Community and extended LGBTA Community.
SHAME on Those People who Did Not VOTE!!!

Florida Governor excludes LGBT people from non-discrimination order.
Newly sworn-in after his victory over Andrew Gillum in the Florida gubernatorial race, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed on Wednesday an executive order ensuring non-discrimination in state employment and state contracting — but the directive notably excludes LGBT people.
