Kansas Gay Sex Ban Remains on Books

Members of Kansas’ Gay Community aren’t happy as lawmakers in Topeka have decided to leave on the books laws banning homosexuality. The laws banning gay sex have been ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, but the law remains in place in Kansas. And an effort to repeal it was killed this week in Topeka, leaving gay and lesbian Kansans outraged. “Good people make bad decisions, and I believe this was a very bad decision,” said Jackie Carter with Metropolitan Community Church. Carter is a leader of the gay and lesbian community in Wichita and the pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church. She says she’s saddened by a move this week in Topeka to leave a law on the books in Kansas that bans gay sex. She says it leaves thousands of gay Kansans under the impression they are unwelcome in the Sunflower State.

Straight NY Teen Killed By Attackers Yelling Anti-Gay Slurs

An 18-year-old high school graduate was beaten and stomped to death at a party in Queens this weekend by four party crashers who were allegedly yelling anti-gay slurs. However, friends testify that victim Anthony Collao had a girlfriend and was not gay. The party was thrown by two gay men, but the four assailants reportedly did not discriminate when it came to picking fights. Suspects Alex Velez, 16, Nolis Ogando, Christopher Lozada and Luis Tabales, all 17, reportedly refused to pay the $7 cover charge to the Woodhaven birthday party on Saturday, and quickly began picking fights, busting windows and scrawling anti-gay slurs on the walls. “They called us homos and all kinds of stuff,” said one man celebrating his 20th birthday. Coallo reportedly fled in his car with a friend, but the suspects followed him and beat him up. Velez reportedly used a pipe, and Collao was on life support until yesterday.

Maryland Gay Marriage Bill Dies with No Final Vote

The speaker of Maryland’s House vowed that Democrats would try again next year to pass legislation legalizing gay marriage, but the intense lobbying by faith groups against the measure in recent weeks shows that it won’t be easy, even in a state known for its liberal politics. A loose coalition of Democratic legislators failed to cobble together enough votes to overcome opposition from Republicans and religious groups, including the Catholic church and many black congregations, to make Maryland the sixth state to legalize gay marriage. Lawmakers had planned to vote on the bill in the House, but it was withdrawn instead Friday and effectively killed for the year. (AP)

10 Countries Now Allow Same-Sex Marriage

A leading rights group says 10 countries have legalized same-sex marriage in the past decade. But Human Rights Watch said in a survey released Monday that bias continues against people who want to marry people of the same gender in those 10 countries and many others. Boris O. Dittrich of the group’s gay rights program says that the growing number of countries legalizing same-sex marriage demonstrates progress in sexual equality around the world. The first same-sex marriages took place in the Netherlands on April 1, 2001. The countries that followed were Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland and Argentina. www.BigGayNews.com

Megachurch Wants Choir to Sign Anti-Gay Covenant

Several choir members at Orange County’s Crystal Cathedral say they’re upset over a document they’ve been asked to sign that takes a strong stand against homosexuality. The “Crystal Cathedral Worship Choir and Worship Team Covenant” recently handed out to members states that they should commit to being Christians by following the Bible in every way, the Orange County Register reported Tuesday. www.BigGayNews.com

US Senate Hearing for Gay Judicial Nominee

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, “shocked” no openly gay men served as federal judges, says gay candidate   J. Paul Oetken possesses legal excellence and moderate views. Schumer, D-N.Y., who recommended Oetken to U.S. President Barack Obama to fill a vacated U.S. district judge post, presides over a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Oetken’s nomination Wednesday. If confirmed, Oetken — a former law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun who also worked in the U.S. Justice Department and in the White House counsel’s office during the Clinton administration — could become the first openly gay male to sit on the federal bench.

STOP THE FDA IN THEIR TRACKS

DON’T LET THE GOVERNMENT SHUT US DOWN!

Excerpts taken from a statement by Gary Pesh, IPCPR President:

We need your help in urging your U.S. Senators to Co-sponsor important legislation! […]  The IPCPR is presently working with its federal lobbyists and Captiol Hill supporters to introduce legislation that would define a premium cigar, and call for its exemption from FDA authority.  This legislation may be one of the greatest fights we have yet to take on and we will be counting on your support […]

Imagine the FDA controlling the premium cigar industry […]:

[King Corona Cigars] will be effectively reduced to a storefront, as cigars would be behind lock and key or – worst case scenario, behind black curtains (just look at what’s happened in parts of Canada).  Customers cannot look or touch the cigars –they make their selections from a binder of black and white photos.

Little advertising allowed.  Even then, it is only black and white block lettering.  Those incredibly detailed pieces of art that grace many cigar boxes gone and defaced by health warnings convering 50% of the box.

[…]if the FDA gets its way –the word “cigar” or “tobacco” would be illegal.

That new limited edition cigar line you look forward to each year?  Gone.  Finished.  Manufacturers would have to submit new blends to the FDA for testing, analysis, and eventual approval (or denial).  This would prove especially devestating for the small boutique manufactuerers and even the larger companies would find this process fiscally unsound.

[…] Flavored cigars would be banned by FDA regulations.

music never stopped

THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED

A film by Jim Kohlberg (2010)

Almost 20 years after their teenage son Gabriel (Lou Taylor Pucci) ran away from home, Henry (J.K. Simmons) and Helen Sawyer (Cara Seymour) learn that he has turned up in a hospital. Although benign, a brain tumor has damaged his memory, rendering past and present indistinguishable. Sensing that Gabriel responds to music, Henry seeks out a music therapist (Julia Ormand), who discovers that when Gabriel listens to the rock music he loved-The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield-he reengages with the world.

Based on Oliver Sacks’s case study “The Last Hippie,” Jim Kohlberg’s touching first feature explores a family divided by the culture clash of the 1960s. By deftly incorporating flashbacks, the film chronicles the souring relationship between father and son-particularly Henry’s growing distaste for the music he feels is poisoning his son’s mind. The striking irony is that Henry’s only means to reconcile with his son is by embracing the very music that divided them in the first place.

HOLLYWOOD REPORTER calls this Sundance darling “Hard to resist!”

The film’s producer will be in attendance for this Southeastern U.S. premier, along with GIFF’s honorary guest, M. Emmet WWalsh.  This is a movie lover’s dream!  Come kick off the best festival yet!  And don’t forget to buy your tickets now to this and all the other great films at giff 2011.  Our full schedule can be found at giff2011.com.

I came across the Chris Salvatore PSA the other night and went straight to your site and donated $35.00 for adoptee Ryan Skipper. I have been the victim of bashing (stabbed in the head with an icepick) but I was lucky VERY VERY LUCKY!. After reading Ryan’s story I was crying most of the evening as this brought me back to a very public and close to home murder, Matthew Shepherd. My partner went to the same school as he did in Fort Collins, Colorado before he transferred to Cheyenne. I realize that it still happens I just did not realize how OFTEN it’s still done. In any event CHEERS MATE on spreading the word and your support of our community!

With that said I was wondering if you have any plans to set up a booth at the Denver Pride Fest this year? We are one of the top 5 in the U.S. for attendance, last year we broke records with 250,000 people attending!! IF you do I would be SO VERY HONORED to volunteer any of my time for you and this amazing cause that has become really close to my heart~

Sensing trouble, 18-year-old Anthony Collao, who had recently graduated from high school and who pals say was straight, left the party with a friend. According to a source, he was chased by the gang, pinned against a car, and punched, kicked, and beaten “within an inch of his life” with a pipe.

He died Monday at Jamaica Hospital after two days on life support. Full story link below!

A lesson for the LGBT Community
Inspired by Former Tampa Mayor, Dick Greco.

Here at MC Film we have a very special relationship with Former Tampa Mayor Dick Greco. The MC Film store in Ybor City was Dick’s grandparents, King Greco Hardware Store. Dick grew up in this store and from time to time will stop by to visit. As Dick was running for Tampa Mayor 2011, we got to know a different side of him. In debates people would criticize him over his city projects. Some of these projects included; The Raymond James Football Stadium, The St. Pete Times Forum, The TECO Trolley Car System, Centro Ybor, Marriott Convention Center Hotel, Channelside…. In debates Dick would say ” It’s strange…. these projects are some of the Most Loved & Most Hated in Tampa. Yet all these projects are important building blocks for the good of all of Tampa.” Dick would go on to say “…do you really think we could have the Republican National Convention coming here if all we had to offer were small motels and the Mons Venus for entertainment?” NO!! We have major hotels, a trolley car & bus systems for transportation & entertainment districts in Ybor City & Channelside! These tourism dollars are for the betterment of ALL of TAMPA. Without these building blocks we would never get the major conventions & tourists. The support of these projects by all the people of Tampa is important to the economics & wellness for all of us.”  ( Dick, I hope I paraphrased your speech properly) .

This got us thinking…..  In the Tampa Bay LGBT Community these same principals apply. Many of our community building blocks are also “The Most Loved & Most Hated.”  The GaYBOR District Coalition, St. Pete Pride,  Pride on 7th, The Tampa International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, GaYBOR Days, Sawmill Resort, TBBG, LGBT Business, non-profits, the LGBT Media & more. Yet all these groups, business, organizations are important building blocks for the good of all of LGBT Tampa Bay. The thriving Downtown District of GaYBOR District in historic Ybor City, with the help of all the other community building blocks, have been drawing in National Drag Pageants, National & International Media including Logo, Discovery Channel, Scy Fy Network, Bravo & other Networks. Together with the Prides, Film Festival & many local events the LGBT tourism has exploded in Tampa Bay. So as we as a community approach the Pride & festival season, we should all remember what Dick Greco said. “The support of these projects by all the people of Tampa is important to the economics & wellness for all of us.” It’s is time for us all to come together & support the Building Blocks of LGBT Tampa Bay.

See Dick Greco at a GaYBOR Meeting.

GaYBOR Makes LGBT History in Tampa as the

Hats off to our brothers & sisters in the Tampa Bay Straight community!  Right here in Ybor City were one of the very few open LGBT Groups in the St. Patrick’s Parade across the USA!!!. This parade is organized by the The Rough Riders  – 1st USV Cavalry.  Several members of the Rough Rider personally visited our float to welcomes us in the parade. One of the funny moments of the night was when a lady walked up to our float & said ” You know our float looks way more Gay than yours!” We all laughed & said “No, your float looks like Christmas explode on it!” What a Great time everybody had together!!!

Celebrity Sighting in GaYBOR at Hamburger Mary's

Carson Kressley the star of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” was spotted at Hamburger Mary’s 3-10-11. The Judy B. Goode Show had just finished and the Mary’s Got Talent was just starting as the news spread thru Mary’s! Carson was in town and had just finished a fundraiser for Macy’s.  Accompanying Carson was our friend Miss So Fonda (out of drag). You just never know what celebrity will turn up in GaYBOR!!!
