Benefit for Amy DeMilo & Our RuPaul Diva, Alexis Mateo

Wednesday Night was a big benefit night and also the conclusion to this seasons RuPaul Drag Race. A huge benefit for Miss Amy DeMilo, who is heading to Dallas for the National Miss USofA Pageant and representing Florida. A cast of 20 performers sang their hearts out to a packed Hamburger Mary’s dining room, all to help defrey costs and get Amy to win in Dallas. With an evening gown costing over $3800, hotel/airfare for 8 professional dancers and entry of $5000, this is a very big important win for our Miss Amy DeMilo and Florida.
Our own Tampa Bay entry Miss Alexis Mateo was on the hot seat for the final and conclusion to season III of RuPauls Drag Race on Logo TV. After being dismissed in the final round, this years winner is Raja.

PRO SHOP PUB, 35 Years of Laid Back Fun

The areas oldest gay bar Pro Shop Pub in Clearwater had its 35th Anniversary Party and the crowds were huge. It is now the oldest gay bar in the state and one of the oldest in the country! Music was playing, people were dancing and a lot of people whom we knew were there to help celebrate its milestone. It is a laid back tourist and local staple in Pinellas County in the daytime or night time and a generous cold drink stop on the way home from the beach. Congratulations Steve and Pro Shop Pub staff

Local Executive Director Attends GLAAD Awards

On April 11, 2011 Lorraine Langlois, Executive Director of Tampa Bay’s Metro Wellness and Community Centers was the invited guest of GLAAD President, Jarrett Barrios at the 22nd annual GLADD Media Awards in Los Angeles.  The event was hosted by Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones.  Dolly Parton, Colin Farrell, Sean Hayes, Chris Colfer, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Allison Janey, Melissa Etheridge, Joel McHale, Kristin Dunst, and Chaz Bono were among the many celebrities who joined the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) as it honored Kristin Chenoweth, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt, and the best in television journalism.  A full listing of award recipients is available at http://www.glaad.org/releases/041111.

GLADD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives.  The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD’s work to amplify stories of LGBT people and issues that build support for equality.  One such story was that of Lisa Pond a healthy 39 year old, who while on vacation in Miami with her partner Janice Langbehn and their children collapsed and later died at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital.  Neither Langbehn nor their children were allowed to see Pond until nearly eight hours after their arrival at the hospital.  The hospital refused to accept information from Langbehn about her partner’s medical history and informed her that she was not considered family.  Janice Langbehn spoke at the GLAAD event where she was presented a special award by her son.

Metro Wellness and Community Centers is the largest HIV/AIDS service organization in West Central Florida and among the largest in the state.  Of the media awards event, Langlois said: “GLAAD plays an essential role in our community presenting true stories and holds the media accountable.  GLAAD presents images of the GLBT community accurately.  This is a worthy entity to support, even at the local community level.”  Langlois and GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios have been friends and colleagues for many years.

FLORIDA HIV/AIDS SERVICES AND PROGRAMS ARE AT RISK

    especially to those most vulnerable

and unable to pay for life saving medications

Tallahassee – Beginning Monday April 25th the Florida Department of Health will be conducting four (4) public hearings around the state of Florida on proposed reductions to the eligibility threshold to Florida’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), AIDS Insurance Continuation Program (AICP), Housing Opportunities for persons with AIDS (HOPWA), and possibly other Ryan White funded HIV/AIDS programs and services.

Michael Ruppal, Executive Director of The AIDS Institute, stated “With almost 8,000 people on ADAP waiting lists nationwide and 3,807 of those in Florida alone, it is clear that the need is significant. Reducing the eligibility to further limit the number of people accessing services only compounds the problem and puts many more lives at risk.”  He went on to say, “This is a time to take action and tell the state how reducing the eligibility criteria for HIV/AIDS services will hurt those in need.”

The hearings will take place on April 25 in Tallahassee; May 3 in Miami; May 4 in Tampa; and May 9 in Miami.

The AIDS Institute encourages all Floridians to oppose these reductions and asks people to:

    • Prepare a written statement about why reductions in the guidelines of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) for eligibility from 400% FPL to anything less would be detrimental to you or your loved ones.
    • Plan on attending one or more of the public hearings and read your statement into the public record.
    • Plan on submitting your statement to Suzanne_Stevens@doh.state.fl.us through May 6, 2011 if you are unable to attend a hearing.
    • Share this information with as many people as possible for them to take action.
    • Help others get to one of the hearings and help them prepare their statements.
    • Go to www.theaidsinstitute.org and http://bit.ly/h3cTU1 for more information, details about the locations and how to prepare comments.

    The Amphitheatre Opens in GaYBOR

Talk about a full circle come back! John Santoro opened the original Amphitheater (old spelling) on 7th Ave. Four years ago the club scene lagged, the lounge closed and the building was sold. Now John is back with new partner, Liane Bernati and are leasing out the renovated club. The updated make over they have done is very impressive. For years we said it was like a mini Mannequins Club (formerly in Disney Downtown) having a similar revolving wood dance floor with a huge stage 10 ft in the air. As you enter the new Amphitheatre (new spelling) your immediately hit with clean fresh air! All the dirty 90’s curtains and wall hangings are gone and the new floors are buffed beautiful.  Upstairs the VIP level is now all open. Gone are the individual glass walls and VIP rooms. The most impressive new feature is the sound. By opening up the rooms the new sound wraps around you and makes you feel like you’re in the front row! We understand that the club will be available for special events & private venue. One thing for sure this Phoenix of a club is back & more beautiful than ever!  FMI www.amptampa.com
