Caribbean Resort Pitches For Gay Honeymoons

Caribbean Resort Pitches For Gay Honeymoons
by Kitty Bean Yancey, USA TODAY
The luxury Queen’s Gardens Resort on the island of Saba is giving gay couples who marry in New York City a free night. Courtesy of Queen’s Gardens Resort A resort on the tiny island of Saba, whose tourist board dubs it the “Unspoiled Queen” of the Caribbean is hoping to cash in on the gay honeymoon business when New York legalizes gay marriage. And the way it’s doing it is by offering a wedding present in the form of a free night.
Lots of destinations and hotels have pitched themselves as perfect honeymoon spots for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples. But Saba’s Queen’s Gardens Resort is pulling out all the stops.

NYC Hopes For Tourist Inreases from Gay Marriage Law
“Queen of New York Hearts” honeymoon special offers a free night and a free breakfast in bed at the luxury resort to any newlyweds with a New York marriage certificate. The offer is valid through Dec. 15, and certificates must be dated on or after July 24, when the new marriage law is scheduled to take effect. And a couple must stay at least four nights.
No discrimination here: Hetero newlyweds are welcome, too.
Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Sun and Associated Press recently reported that Sin City’s Convention and Visitors Authority is looking into whether it will market itself as a gay honeymoon destination.

Written by Chuck McSorley, Member of The UV Rays

As I look over the event calendar of the past year, I’ve suddenly realized just how diverse the audiences for the UV Rays performances have been. We’ve sung for pride celebrants, church worshippers, former flappers from the roaring 20’s, local and state politicians, university presidents … the list goes on. A major honor presented itself to us on April Fool’s Day no less, when we performed at newly elected Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s inauguration. Singing ‘God Bless America’ and ‘Make Them Hear You’ in front of hundreds of people and receiving generous praise for the effort is a thrill each of us will never forget. Another highlight was performing an intimate review of the music of Cole Porter at St. Petersburg’s Studio @ 620 in May. We sang and told stories of Porter’s wild and tragic life, we camped it up and were moved to tears. Such an appreciative audience too, sold out if I may be so immodest! We enjoyed learning Porter’s melodies and smart, provocative lyrics so much, we’re planning to add it to our permanent repertoire … now we will always has jazz!

We had a new beginning halfway through the season, as we said good-bye to our good-humored and completely talented leader Brent Douglas. We miss you Brent! Good luck to you in your continuing education. For Spring and beyond now, we found the wonderful, hard-working talent of Justin Havard. He has truly stepped up our game, and we are honored to learn from him.

The Rays had the privilege to perform for a couple thousand people this year in total once the audiences are added all up. I hope we punctuated the lives of our listeners with a few more exclamation points, whether they be in holiday spirit, a striving toward collaboration, or a cry for equality and acceptance. look forward to the season ahead, Una Voce’s 10th anniversary year, eagerly awaiting the chance to blend our voices again for our delightfully supportive audiences. Viva Vienna!

Stageworks Invites you to its Ribbon Cutting

Stageworks opens its permanent home at the Grand Central in The Channel District with a ribbon cutting on August 11

After years of playing on stages throughout the Tampa Bay area, Stageworks will be opening its doors and cutting the ribbon to its permanent home in the Grand Central at Kennedy Complex in the revitalized Channel District!

On Thursday, August 11 at 11 AM, Stageworks invites the community to join them in celebrating at the ribbon cutting ceremony. The Tampa Bay community has been a huge part of creating this wonderful home, so it is only fitting to have the whole community join them in celebrating.

This opening has been anticipated and worked toward for over two decades by Ms. Brennen, who was later joined by Board President Andrea Graham. “It’s been five years in the building, 28 years in the making, and endless hours of hoping, praying and fundraising, but at last we are there. A dream has come true, and the Stageworks philosophy remains intact with something for everyone, especially a home for our artists and at risk youth,” said a very proud Founder/Producing Artistic Director Anna Brennen when making the announcement.

Please join Stageworks at 11 AM on August 11, 2011 in the courtyard at Grand Central in the Channel District for a brief presentation, celebration and first look into the new theatre. Please note that directions and parking tips are included in an attached PDF.

About Stageworks:

Stageworks was founded in 1983 by Anna Brennen as a way to address issues of diversity and social change through theatre. Anna Brennen, Founder/Producing Artistic Director and permanent staff of Stageworks Theatre Company, Inc., received her formal theatre training at Carnegie Mellon and the University of California, Berkeley. She studied in advanced private classes in New York City with Sandy Meisner (Neighborhood Playhouse), Mira Rostova (Moscow Art Theatre), Wynn Handmann (American Place), and Lloyd Richards (Yale University Drama School). In 2006, Anna was given the Artist of the Year Award by the Mayor of the City of Tampa, Pam Iorio. Stageworks’ mission is to provide the highest quality professional theatre which respects, ignites and celebrates the human spirit while challenging the thresholds of intolerance and insensitivity. Stageworks is comprised of a 10-member board, a paid staff of 8, 168 artists and over 300 volunteers.

Former Miss Florida & Local Tampa Diva, Tiffani Middlesex
” Luck is on my side!” stated Tiffani Middlesex in a phone conversation with us. Tiffani from toledo, Ohio has been out to herself and others since she was 7. ” I knew and everyone else did too.” Tiffani went on to talk about growing up gay in Ohio. ” My parents thought I was crazy liking boys and dressing up in my moms clothes. For 3 months… they put me in a crazy ward at a state hospital. I am not crazy and I wont be gay if you let me out!”   So they did. “That place was really scary and I hated it.”
Asked about her family she said that she has a brother and a sister whom she really loves. Her big break came when she was asked to do a drag number.  She started performing drag at 15 years old at a bar called Phil Coss. Then went to work at Rocko’s Twilight Zone.” Those were really crazy times in my life!.” Tif recalled. I loved Diana Ross and Patti Labelle. They were so exciting.  At 18 she ventured to Detroit and stayed for 3 years working clubs. Then onto Houston Texas and back and forth to Cleveland, Ohio. 1978 she was then offered a job in Ybor City at RJ’s Rendezvous (where new Centro Ybor is today). That was for 6 months.
“Then this little guy came in and wanted to know if I wanted a job. That was Rene Rodriguez who owned a couple of gay bars in Tampa. He wanted me to work at Rene’s Cabaret on Kennedy Blvd. Then I became the show director. That lasted 13 years. I loved that guy as did all the girls. He is still highly admired and remembered.”  Tiffani worked and performed at both Rene’s Cabaret and Howard Ave. Bar together for 9 years. She remembers how then creative show director Tiffany Arieagus helped her land the Rene’s show director spot. She was leaving to go on tour.
“I became Miss Florida in 1980 and I was Miss Parliament House the same time.” She had already been Miss Ohio and Miss Detroit.
Asked about her view of todays female illusionists. ” I feel that drag has evolved. I am not saying that in a bad way just that I feel the art form of drag has been lost. It was a man dressing as a woman then returning to a man! That (pause) was the true art of drag.”
Tiffani takes stage again at MCC Tampa Saturday night for a church benefit. A friend told me to go with him to church. I put it off and said ‘oh yeah’. Then he said that they had a Sunday night dinner. I said ”  I love food girl! And I enjoyed it.  The people the singing and the new friends. So I got more involved and I was doing a Saturday night show at the Parliament House and I would come home Sunday morning. I’d go to church and head back for the Sunday night show I had to put on. That is my story.”
Well you go girl, back at you…. Tampa’s Diva Miss Tiffani Middlesex.

Tunnels of Ybor

20110710_147

Could it be that an important part of Ybor history is peaking out of the ground at us? The tunnels of Ybor are a big part of the past. It is said that the tunnels ran from the Port of Tampa to Ybor City. Then the main tunnel ran east & west. It is said to have been build with curved arch brick roof & was complete with electricity & a rail system. These tunnels were used during prohibition to transport liquor and other things. There were many off shots from the main tunnel. One of these tunnels ran from the Blue Ribbon Store to Las Novedades, later  became El Goya – Tracks – Pleasure Dome today is – Czar. In the 1970’s El Goya caught on fire & it is said that the tunnel entrance was blocked. On August 11, 2000 the Blue Ribbon burned to the ground. Today there is a parking lot where the Blue Ribbon was. New landscaping was recently added around the parking lot. After the heavy rains, suddenly a peak into Ybor past has now opened! It’s aprox 4 ft wide, with bricks stacked on bricks & runs under the sidewalk. Is this a tunnel of Ybor City????  There are suppose to be several TV News stories coming out this week.

Below is a May 2011 news report on the Tunnels of Ybor!!
