A membership renewal party for The Historic Ybor Neighborhood Association was held at The Bricks. What a great way to meet your old & new neighbors in a fun setting. Attending was newly elected Tampa City Councilman Mike Suarez. A great time to be introduced to local business owners, residents and attract city hall. It was brought up that residents at The Quarters in Ybor have been calling their Westside pool, “GaYBOR Beach.” Then residents of The Box Factory said, ” in that case our pool is now South Beach!!” So just how many pools are in Historic Ybor? It was agreed 6. The Quarter (2), the Box Factory, Hampton Inn & Suites, Hilton Garden’s Inn & 1 residential on 5th & 17th. The things you learn at a neighborhood party. The Brick’s appetizers were great as always & the 1/2 price drinks were great too!

New Gay Sports Bar, Leather Bar, Jacuzzi Bar coming to GaYBOR
With over 260+ businesses in Ybor City when one closes up everybody starts to speculate on what’s moving in!!! There are now 3 new great open store spaces. The former Laughing Cat Restaurant would make for a perfect GLBT Sports Bar or Bistro. It has it all.. great location, a kitchen, great artsy space, streetcar frontage and in the heart of the historic and GaYBOR District. On the corner of 5th Ave & 18th an old diner/bar is now back on the market. This would be the perfect location for a neighborhood bar, even better locations for a leather club. Sadly, last week the gay live band playing PLAY Ybor Bar closed. We have always said what a fun outside patio to put a Jacuzzi on!!! So there you have it 3 available properties, all with 3 great things in common… LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!!! Viva La GaYBOR

In Ybor City is the nations only tri-lingual newspaper, La Gaceta. http://www.lagacetanewspaper.com/ This paper is in English, Spanish & Italian. The editor & publisher is Patrick Manteiga. His editorials are always great & interesting. Unfortunately the newspaper isn’t online or blog yet. So….here is what Patrick wrote this past week….
” We met Governor Rick Scott this week. As we shook his hand, we told him of our newspaper and that we were pretty liberal and left-leaning. With a smile on his face and what we detected as disdain in his heart, he responded, “Liberal and left, you’re destroying jobs.” So much for finding common ground. He should go back to selling donuts; it suits him better.”

In an era of positive changes in the GLBT community, what are your choices for all time great gay cinema. Most recently director Ang Lee produced a romantic ‘gay cowboy’ story, “Brokeback Mountain.” But that has already been 6 years ago! Others that seem to be in our Top 13 contenders and films that made a social lasting change include; Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Torch Song Trilogy, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Maurice, Cruising, LaCage Aux Folles, Before Night Falls, Boys in The Band, Times of Harvey Milk, Latter Days, Philadelphia, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Tales of the City, Beautiful Thing.
Hollywood has attempted to include more GLBT films most recently, but have they really! Have studios top brass been keeping up with the times of equality and social changes? Homophobia in Hollywood? I guess we all know that answer by by-passing one of the best movies for the top slot released in 2005 that happens to be gay themed!

A city council report for Liverpool, England, recommends that the city recognize its Stanley Street area as a “gay quarter,” in order to boost tourism. Similar moves have benefited Brighton, Manchester and Birmingham, England, the report found.

Romney, Bachmann and Santorum Sign New Marriage Pledge
Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., have signed a new pledge to oppose marriage equality, support a federal marriage amendment and restrict their judicial nominations to judges who disagree that gay and lesbian couples have a constitutional right to marry. The pledge, put forward by the National Organization for Marriage, also says signers promise to establish a presidential commission to investigate claims that marriage-equality opponents are being harassed or threatened.
