Hoffman Porges Gallery reopens in Ybor City-Opening Gala to support Homeless female veterans

Ybor City, FL – The historic Hoffman Porges Gallery on 7th Avenue in Ybor City will reopen on September 9th, with a redux of the “Virgins & Vixens” show.

The Ybor icon, opened in 1990 by Marcie Hoffman, was recently purchased by retired Air Force General Dave Scott and his wife Jill who is also an Air Force veteran.  Both Dave and Jill serve on a host of local committees and organizations that support and promote the arts in Ybor  including the Adamo Drive Mural Project, Ybor City Development Corporation and the Ybor Arts Association.

The Gallery grand reopening show on Friday September 9, will celebrate women throughout the ages.  All proceeds from the opening and subsequent VIP reception on September 10th will be donated to the Athena Program, a project of the local non-profit organization Tampa Crossroads, Inc., in support of homeless female veterans in our community.  The ATHENA Home for female veterans was the first program to open in the State to serve honorably discharged female veterans in a gender specific environment.  Tampa Crossroads continues their work to assist at-risk veterans and their families.

“I am just so pleased to be on the bow wave of Ybor’s art renaissance”, states Jill. “Awakening the Hoffman Porges legacy is something that will both promote and support the arts in our local Historic Landmark District’. Partnering with the Ybor Art Association (YAA!) and Tampa Crossroads gives us a unique opportunity to give back immediately.”  “As a founder of the YAA! Group we have consistently promoted the return of fine art to Ybor City. With the re-opening of this historic gallery we are encouraged that the community does indeed support a cultural awakening” said Sara Romeo.  “What an honor to work with Dave and Jill to both re-open the gallery and support our local military troops who are struggling after serving honorably” says Romeo.

Event: Friday Sept. 9, 2011 from ___ to___pm and Saturday Sept. 10 for the VIP Reception 6-10pm

Where: Hoffman-Porges Gallery 1919 7th Ave– Ybor City

On October 22, prepare to have your soiled pants scared right off when Creative Loafing Presents: Reel Terror 2011. A one-day film festival celebrating the local horror scene and the many brave souls who risk life and financial ruin in pursuit of their dreams, Reel Terror will include panel discussions with area filmmakers, celebrity appearances, screenings of scary movies shot all over the Bay area and the state, an audience-dictated awards ceremony and much more.

Whether you’re a local film-nerd working on a low budget creep-a-thon or an experienced hack that’s just completed their magnum opus, we want to hear from you. To enter, go to http://cltampa.com/reelterror and fill out the online entry form. You will have the option of providing an online link to your film for us to review or sending us a DVD. (Note: We’ll need a DVD either way if your film is selected for the festival.) We will then notify those selected for the festival by Sept. 30, 2011.

The rules for submissions to Reel Terror 2011 are as follows:

  •  All entries must be received by Sept. 15, 2011
  •  Entry fee is $35 for a short film (less than 30 minutes) and $50 for a feature (30-90 minutes long). Entry fee includes VIP tickets to the event regardless of if your film is chosen to compete
  • Your film MUST have been shot in the state of Florida
  • Your film MUST be solely your work and not contain any unlicensed, copyrighted or otherwise infringing material — that includes the music, folks

Finally, keep checking cltampa.com/movies or follow us @cl_movies for updates and more info as we get closer to date of the festival. We’ll see you on October 22 — if you’ve got the guts, that is.

Homophobic Hate Crimes Spreading Throughout Brazil

http://blog.amnestyusa.org/iar/homophobic-hates-crimes-spreading-throughout-brazil/

Latinos and LGBT Target In CA
Houndurs murders LGBT
Black Lesbian attacked  POLICE DID NOT DO THERE JOB

In conversations with groups such as the Anti-Defamation League , the Southern Poverty Law Center , the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Missouri Highway Patrol and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, all spoke of a wave of hate they see stirring across America. Among their findings and concerns:

·         Hate crimes and hate incidents are woefully underreported. Some states don’t report them at all.

·         The number of hate crimes committed against Hispanics (and those perceived to be immigrants) has increased each of the past four years.

·         Hate crimes committed against individuals because of sexual orientation have increased to their highest level in five years.

 ·         The internet and social networking sites have been a boom to white supremacy and the growth of racism and organized hate groups.

·         Few hate crimes are ultimately prosecuted as hate crimes.

These facts and trends don’t occur in a vacuum, but rather in the context of a broader social milieu that feeds into what some call the marketing of hate.

IF ANY OF THIS EMAIL SEEMS HARSH … ask Ryan Skipper or Craig Cohen what harsh feels like to them Seeing LGBT people who could help but instead pretend or ignore the facts that LGBT people are being killed fighting for them to be free… and then forgetting the the life they lost by Put a big TARGET on THERE BACK AND “COMING OUT”  Or as i like to say BREAKING FREE from the CAGE of Shame and FEAR…That is harsh to me

Gecko Ball 2011: “The Lizard of Oz”
Hi Mark & Carrie –

Long time, no see.  Mike and I are working on this year’s Gecko Ball
in Gulfport and we remembered enjoying your company at the Ball last
year (memento attached).  Geckos in Wonderland last year was a blast,
but this year THE LIZARD OF OZ promises to be even more fun.  Just
wanted to pass along a personal invitation to the Ball this year.  I
believe you’ve already received our press release about the Ball, but
for good measure, I’ve attached a copy of it, as well as a jpg of the
poster for THE LIZARD OF OZ.

We are selling tickets online this year to make it easier for all our
friends in Tampa and elsewhere.  There is a ticket sales link on the
homepage of www.GulfportMA.com.  Let your friends know too!

If you guys could make it, we’d love to see you there.  We stopped in
to see you in Ybor a few weeks ago, but neither of you were there.
Maybe next time.  Meanwhile, hope you are doing well, and hope to see
you at The Gecko Ball.

(Not sure which is the best email address for you guys personally, so
I sent it to the 3 addresses I have.)

Take care,

Daniel

People are Talking
Remember we don’t repeat Gossip! So listen closely!!!
It was a week of birthday’s! Kurt King, co-owner of  Hamburger Mary’s & Bradley Nelson, owner of  Bradley’s on 7th both on the same day!! There was a huge party thrown by friends for Bradley. The food was catered by New York, New York Pizza. We understand that Mamma even got a couple good birthday spankings in. By the end of the night guest had lost count on the Ybor drink Mini Guineas. The Laughing Cat Restaurant put up their new sign. Since moving into their new location (old Streetcar CharliesRestaurant) last week they have been packed every night!  The Thursday Night party at The Social is even bigger than before! More A/C & huge fans were even brought in. One of the craziest party spots in town is in the Socials Basement . We all call it, “that 70’s Place.” Sometimes Naughty bois are Nice. That’s just what happened at Liquid Lounge when Andre challenged everybody into one handed push up contest!  The creativity & entertainment at Tease & G.BAR keeps blowing us away! Saturday night there were Sumo Wrestlers at Tease & NEON HITCH at G.BAR WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! Starting this Saturday night G.BAR will have a New Drag Show starting at 10:30 with $1.00 drinks.  The Happy Hour crowds at Bradley’s on 7th keep getting bigger & bigger. It’s easy to fell why….. They have hands down the Best cold Air Conditioning in GaYBOR!!!! You will need it for all the HOT Dancers & Great Shows there.        The TV show, “Born to Ride” was caught in Ybor filming for there new season. Caught walking on the GaYBOR side streets were contestants from “So You Think You Can Dance!”  The writer & director of “Sordid Lives”, Del Shores was at Hamburger Mary’s for a dinner show. His one man theatrical production could easily make a trucker blush!!!  The new window dressings at The Honey Pot are done & OMG WOW!!!  Set designer Mathieu did it again.  There are rumors going around that Hollywood is looking at Mathieu. Speaking of rumors….   there is a lot of talk about a new leather bar & a new dinner restaurant coming to Ybor soon. With all the chatter of changes,  What are you opinions on Muppets, Bert & Ernie from Sesame Street getting hitched?  People around the country are talking and we want to know!!!
Until Next Week….

Congratulations to Stageworks!!!! You did it!!!!
