"Liiisten" at Collage

Stay In Tampa
years back to all the times I was sitting at my computer getting ready to write
about my newest endeavor or project. All of those events and albums came and
went and time is relentless. It’s now 2011 and here I am, giving it another
try.
On Wednesday, September 28th I will be launching my
new open mic night at Collage Ybor (
1701 E. 8th Ave., Ybor City, FL
33605). I am calling the night “Liiisten” because it’s easy to Google and I
have a friend that makes me smile when she says “liiisten” a lot. And because
I’m in the market for people who like to listen with one “i” or
three.
Tampa has been good to me this year. I just won a Best Of The Bay
award from Creative Loafing. The TBT listed me among the top ten artists of the
year. At 36 years old I’m still young enough to have the entire world at my
feet. Many people might seize this moment to move on to a bigger city to win
different awards from different people. Our modern society is about movement.
Perhaps the most popular cure to boredom and jadedness is to move to a place
full of fresh faces that haven’t disappointed you yet.
Sure Tampa has
disappointed me but it has also provided me with countless moments of
inspiration and the most comfortable, easy life I could ever hope for. When
seeking out creativity there has never been a shortage of talent. I wonder if
people would like Tampa more if someone put “I LOVE TAMPA” on a thousand coffee
mugs and t-shirts. People believe what they read. I love Tampa even though it
doesn’t say that on any coffee mugs.
With “Liiisten” I’d like to be the
glue that brings together a lot of the fragmented scenes in Tampa Bay area. I
am in love with the singer/songwriter scene. I am in love with the noise scene
in St. Pete. I love some of the drag and circuit party creativity that is
coming out of Gaybor. I want to offer a stage where all these fragmented
subcultures can rub elbows and appreciate each other.
Every week I will
spotlight a featured artist. These artists will get a half hour spot to perform
and get a Joan Rivers-style sit down interview with me on stage. Occasionally I
will have co-hosts to banter with. I view my night as a live talk show. In
addition, there will be slots for musicians to show up, sign up, and perform.
Sign up is from 9-9:30. The open mic itself will be from 9:30 til 1am. I have
to end the night early so I can get in a late night dance at Czar. Everyone is
welcome. Everyone. Make sure to “like” the Liiisten page on Facebook…I will
be offering early sign-up online sometimes.
Being someone that moved
around a lot when I was younger I am self aware enough to know that no matter
where I live I will end up becoming disgruntled, reclusive, and irritated at how
shallow, materialistic, and dependent on instant gratification our culture is.
Unless something amazes me and shakes me deep to the soul (which has never
happened to me while visiting a large trendy city…unfortunately people are
people everywhere) in Tampa I will stay. Because I am here I wouldn’t feel
right if I didn’t do something to contribute to the local arts
community.
Tampa…I hope you have some music to play and some art to
share…because I am dying to watch and to liiisten.

A proposed anti-gay bill in Uganda that would impose the death sentence in some cases was pushed by Janet Museveni, the country’s first lady, according to diplomatic cables published by Wikileaks. The cables describe a senior adviser to Uganda’s president telling a U.S. diplomat that Museveni is “a very extreme woman” and the key figure behind the bill.
THE AIDS INSTITUTE SUPPORTS THE 4th ANNUAL
Washington, DC – In recognition of the fourth annual National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NGMHAAD), The AIDS Institute (TAI) pauses to remember the enormous toll HIV/AIDS has historically taken and continues to take on gay men. We acknowledge the efforts of all the individuals and groups for promoting this day as we seek to invest greater resources to reducing the rate of infection of HIV among gay men.
In August 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published new HIV incidence estimates for the United States. Although the total number of new infections has remained stable, men who have sex with men (MSM), including gay men, accounted for 86 percent of new infections among white men, 81 percent among hispanic men, and 73 percent among black men.
The AIDS Institute continues to support HIV awareness, education and testing efforts as a means of preventing the spread of the virus among gay men and MSM, as well as other at risk communities. Hopefully, by working together we can make strides toward putting an end to the HIV epidemic. www.theaidsinstitute.org.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Small fry society and bun in the oven bunch set to launch in Tampa Bay
Program to provide array of social activities for moms, babies and moms-to-be; marketing opportunities for businesses
Tampa, FL — September 16, 2011 — Small fry society (sfs), a six-week activity program for Tampa Bay area mothers and babies under three years old, launches on September 21. Bun in the oven bunch (bob) is set to launch on October 11 with a similar program format but geared at expectant mothers. Like small fry society, bun in the oven bunch members will come together at various locations for weekly one and a half hour distinctively themed “socials” to include breakfast/lunch. The term also includes one Girls’ Night Out, a moms-only event featuring entertainment, light bites, cocktails and giveaways at Neiman Marcus on October 25. The Girls’ Night Out is open to moms and moms-to-be not already members of sfs and bob and it provides a taste of the events, people and giveaways involved in this unique mommy and me/mommy-to-be program.
“My goal is to create a real sense of community – among mothers, their babies, mothers-to-be, the businesses supporting small fry society and bun in the oven bunch, and the broader Tampa Bay area. We can all be a vital support system to one another,” said Amy Lundy Florida native, mom and creator of the programs.
Lundy appreciated the ”mommy and me” class offerings, but felt the variety of activity options and opportunities to socialize with the other moms was lacking. Given her marketing and event planning experience for several Fortune 500/100 companies, she took the task on for herself. In creating small fry society and bun in the oven bunch, she developed socials that include something for everyone, from food to fitness to fashion to fabulous freebies and more. She designed a program with women in mind who look to enjoy different family-friendly activities from week to week. The socials provide a venue for moms, babies and moms-to-be to meet new people, receive advice from experts in the community, and experience businesses’ products and services in a unique way—hands-on, interactive, in an intimate setting, amongst old and new friends.
An equally important aspect to sfs and bob is that they provide promotional opportunities to support local businesses’ marketing efforts to the growing family demographic. Some of the first term’s business partners include Neiman Marcus, Yogurtology, Amore, Schakolad, Lucky Cat Yoga, Nicole Geller Photography, Shari Mezrah “The Sleep Mom”, Color Me Mine, Monet and Merlot, Jacqueline Spitaleri-Nutrition, Fitness and Lifestyle Expert, South Tampa Pilates, Lindsay Does Makeup and Baby Boundaries.
Lundy plans to extend her programs to include evening and weekend socials for moms and moms-to-be.
Registration for small fry society and bun in the oven bunch, as well as Girls’ Night Out is now open. For more information and to register for the programs, please visit www.smallfrysociety.com.

St. Lucy’s School for Girls Raised By Wolves, live on the HCC Ybor Campus Plaza!

This special story telling / dance / theatre work is based on the short story by Florida author Karen Russel.

Our narrator and her exuberantly anarchic wolf-sisters are sent to the sisters of St. Lucy to be civilized … but will they succeed in becoming human?. The macabre fantasy evokes great Southern writers like Flannery O’Connor.

Performances are Thursday through Saturday September 29 through October 1 at 7:30 with an additional matinee on Saturday October 1 at 3:00 pm.
