La La’s Sangria Bar
Island Hopping at La La’s Sangria Bar
When you’re in Ybor City as a resident or visitor you will feel like you’re on an Island. With a friendly island attitude, we park our car (Boat) then walk to everything!!! I’m sure many other communities in our area have the same feeling. When Ybor people are not in Ybor City we call it “Being off the island.” This past SUNday FUNday a big group went Island Hopping to “La La’s Sangria Bar” in Channelside. What an exciting and fun way to spend a SUNday FUNday!!! Then show host is Miss Daisy Rae, an Ybor resident too. The Owner John & his staff did everything to make the day special. Here is a big hint… The new Hampton Inn on Kennedy & Meridian has public parking. La La’s Sangria Bar is located at 203 N. Meridian Ave. Next door to the Hampton Inn. Be sure to call (813) 460-4522 for reservations. CHEERS https://www.facebook.com/LaLasSangriaBar/

Hungry in Ybor City???
We think that one of the reasons the grocery stores are so empty is… We all love to eat out and just don’t have that much food at home. Small area restaurants are closed or are doing Take Out Only. Help by ordering out if you can. Here are some tasty suggestions for you.
New York New York Pizza

Here are our 2 favorite Asian leftovers tip.
- When you order also order 1 large chicken broth only soup. Then the next day put this soup in the pan with all the left overs. Instant FAB Soup.
- The next day in a med size frying pan start to heat the leftovers up. Wisk 4 to 6 eggs and pour over the leftovers in the pan. Cook until the bottom starts to set up. Then put the pan in the over under the broiler and cook until golden. Puff instant Fretata. YAAA
La Segunda Bakery

We all know about La Segunda’s Cuban Bread!!! Did you know they also make one of the best Cuban Sandwiches. They are so huge that we get one and share it all the time. While you’re there you can also pick up deserts for your sweet tooth! Order online in advance and the line will be much shorter.

El Paraiso Café

A hidden Jewel of Ybor City. Manny Alvarez took us here the first time and are glad he did. We eat here at least once a week and sometimes more. There is nothing fancy here but the food is really GREAT!!! Click here to see what we are talking about. They are open for breakfast and lunch only! It is mostly takeout only. They speak very little English. That’s OK if you smile & point, they will treat you fine. The meals are huge and make great left overs. Located at 4112 E 7th Ave, Ybor City.
Located Next doors is Smelt Feed & Pet Supplies https://smeltfeed.com/ This is an Ybor City must do visit. We like everything about this place. It’s very clean and the staff are helpful. This is where we purchase all our outside bird seeds. Many of our friends also visit here.

The Ybor City Lamp Posts
There are many stories about the Ybor City Lamp Posts. Very little is actually recorded and written down. Here is our version of the story. This was told to us by many different people. In the 1900’s there were 100s of Ybor City lamp style post across the City of Tampa. During World War II all the lamp posts were collected and melted down to make steel. This steel was used to make the 2nd ship called The USCGC Tampa. The first one was sunk by a German submarine in 1918 during World War 1. Then the 2nd ship was in use until 1947. The lamp post were all gone.
Then came urban renewal in the 1960’s. To the horror of many in Tampa – Ybor City the Urban Renewal became known as “Burn Baby Burn”. 100’s of structures were being burned down to make way for the new urban. The Tampa Historical Society went up in arms to the mayor’s office. It was agreed that the Former Ybor City Fire Hall was to become the Historical Museum. The big day came and everyone went down to City Hall where the mayor signed the building over. When the group went back to Ybor City to celebrate, the build was gone! It had been knocked down the same day! WOW WHAT A MESS!!! You can just imagine how upset the public was! This is the site of Centennial Park today in Ybor City. Later the Ferlita Bakery across the street became Ybor City Museum State Park.
The Mayor had many people very upset. About this time a federal grant came thru. It basically said that cities need to maintain a stockpile iron reserves. Hum Tampa used to have lamp posts at one time. The problem was that they were all gone. Then someone said “There is one still left in the Columbia Restaurant Court Yard dining room.” That lamp pole was used as the model. The Mayor had Historical Reproductions of the original lamp post made and placed thru out Ybor City. He was now back in the good graces with the Historical Society. Today the lamp posts are valued at $60,000+ each. Tampa still has a reserve of iron too. This is the version we remember.
