Dishing with Mark and Carrie… Ybor City 7-27-16
Las Novedades Spanish Restaurant.
Today on the corner of 7th ave & 15th street in Ybor City sits a ugly eyesore of a building. Suffering years of neglect and now gutted out. Rumors of renovations come and go. This was not always the case. In the past this was one of the most popular and favorite happening place for many. Style and glamour at its best!
Opening in 1890 as a restaurant and Havana Hotel. In the 1930, 40, 50, 60 it was the main friendly restaurant competitor for the famous Columbia Restaurant just down 7th Ave. Many different restaurant dining rooms to enjoy the fascinating Latin fare.
In the 1970’s it changed hands and went broke. Soon it became a World Famous Gay Bar, The El Goya. After a small fire it re opened as the El Goya. With 5 different bars all in one location and fantastic drink specials. The El Goya would pack in 5,000+ every weekend. A show bar, dance bar, western room, a cool cave drinking room and the corner diner.
The gay club went through transitions to become Tracks, Pleasure Dome & closing 3 years ago as Czars. For a fascinating look back at her fabulous history.

Help Save Me!! I AM Historic!
The old Jackson Rooming House, located in downtown Tampa at 851 E Jackson Street is ready to fall over!!! Literally!! Located across the street from the Tampa Train Station. Tthis was a very famous hotel in the Central Ave area for blacks.
In a time when there were white only hotels in Tampa. Many of the famous jazz singers and performers have stayed here.
James Brown, Nat “King” Cole, Duke Ellington & Ella Fitzgerald just to name a few. On both sides of the hotel are parking lots. Let’s all hope this doesn’t become a parking lot too.

The upcoming TAMPA PRIDE Planning Meeting is set for Tuesday, August 2nd in the big conference room at Hampton Inn Ybor at 6pm.

Ybor City is listed in the Top 8 Best Neighborhoods in all of Tampa Bay to live. The main reason is the locals really do enjoy each other and have a tight sence of community here. Many of us think there is an Island mentality in Ybor City.
Once you are on the Island of Ybor you don’t want to leave. Locals, tourists and guests party, drink, shop, network and treat Ybor like there own living room.
There is one group that are especially fun and keep this Island Spirit Alive they are HYNCA. Historic Ybor Neighborhood Civic Association https://www.facebook.com/groups/HYNCA/ .
The group not only volunteers for many events but also hosts fun mixer socials. HYNCA is open to everybody to join. You do not need to live in Ybor City, just love it as much as they do. The annual dues are just $15.

With an addition a new community partnership, T Rowe Price Corp., a global investment management company, held on its campus on Boyscout Blvd its first LGBT & Diversity event. The Diversity team of the corporation wanted to expand the fellow workers alliances and share information about Tampa’s great Gay community.
Many associates have transferred to Tampa from other locations of the T. Rowe Price campuses including Baltimore its home base. 12 organizations set up, handed out information and talked to the 500 team members. Groups including TAMPA PRIDE, PFLAG, Metro Wellness & Community Centers, Equality Florida and a number of GLBT businesses.

GameTime and Intercard Team Up to
Support Victims of Pulse Tragedy
- LOUIS, JULY 25, 2016 — Intercard, Inc., a leader in cash management solutions for the amusement and casino industries, has teamed up with GameTime family entertainment centers in Florida to support victims’ families and survivors of the Pulse tragedy in Orlando by facilitating donations through game card purchases.
GameTime guests have the option of making a donation when purchasing their game card, with 100% of these guest-driven donations going directly to the OneOrlando Fund. The OneOrlando Fund is a project of Strengthen Orlando, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, which is ensuring that funds are distributed directly to victims’ families and survivors in an open and transparent manner. Intercard donated 66,000 account numbers for game cards. The rainbow-colored cards are emblazoned with “#OrlandoStrong.”
“We expect to get $1 to $2 per game card, which will enable us to donate at least $66,000 to support the victim’s families and survivors of the Pulse tragedy,” said Mike Abecassis, CEO of GameTime.
“We’re honored that Mike and his team approached us with the idea and the opportunity to support the cause,” said Scott Sherrod, CEO of Intercard. “Mike runs a great organization, and he clearly cares about his community.”
