PRIDE ON 7TH RETURNS WITH A BRIGHTER VISION AND BIGGER PURPOSE

 

Jorge Alvarado along with The Umbrella Management Group Announce Plans for Tampa’s 2nd Annual Pride on 7TH Event

 

March 3, 2011 – TAMPA, FL – Pride on 7th is back and plans to welcome more than 10,000 attendees for its second annual festivities.  The Umbrella Management Group, which is led by Jorge Alvarado, an entertainment visionary, has planned a full day of activities in support of unity within our communities.  Pride on 7th has expanded it space and its offerings this year.  The event will be in the heart of Ybor City along Centro Ybor and will include many more activities including an anti-bullying march; a bingo night; Miss Pride on 7th pageant and a red carpet finale.  The event will also feature a family area, business vendors, live DJ and a special celebrity performance from Cazwell, a very popular artist within the gay and lesbian circuit.   Pride on 7th is on Saturday, April 30th.  The event will kick off at 9am with the anti-bullying walk and culminate with a red carpet dance party at G-Bar, an Ybor nightclub.  Attendees are asked to donate $10 to Pride on 7th community beneficiaries.  Participants will receive an Ybor map featuring partnering businesses, a commemorative guide and an easy pass lanyard.   More information is available at www.prideon7th.com.

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally Resource Center at American University would like to extend a warm greeting to Gay-Straight Alliances and Youth Organizations across the U.S.  It is our belief that the issues and concerns that young people face in high school are similar to those faced when entering and attending college.  American University and the GLBTA Resource Center hope to help prospective high school and transfer students answer any questions or concerns about the admissions process or about “GBLT Life” at AU.   Please feel free to contact our office at <www.american.edu/glbta> or (202) 885-3347.

We would also like to introduce you to one of the Resource Center’s several outreach programs.  The Spectrum Project is an outreach campaign organized to help GLBT students looking at American University. From helping with the application process to introducing prospective students to GLBT life at American University and everything in between, the Spectrum Project assists prospective students with whatever questions they may have.  The program connects prospective students to Advisors, who are current GLBTA students at American University and can help the prospective student with any questions he or she may have.  For GLBT students looking at different colleges, we hope you will consider American University and talk to one of our many helpful Advisors to see if American is the right fit for them.

American University offers a first-class college environment with a large and visible GLBT population, as well as numerous on-campus resources for GLBT students.  From on-campus GLBT organizations to GLBT-related courses, American University provides a well-rounded and nurturing community for any student and for all identities.  As you may already know, the Washington Metro region provides even more opportunities for GLBT students.  Between political activism, entertainment, and other colleges and universities within the area, Washington D.C. has something for everyone!

YBOR FESTIVAL OF THE MOVING IMAGE

March 23-27, 2011

Tampa, FL– Hillsborough Community College-Ybor City Campus presents the 9th annual Ybor Festival of the Moving Image (FOMI), Wednesday, March 23 through Sunday, March 17, 2011. 

The ninth annual Ybor Festival of the Moving Image continues to bring to Tampa an eclectic spectrum of non-traditional uses of motion media, including video sculpture and installations, performances and unique work by very independent filmmakers, plus documentaries, workshops, lectures and surprises. All the venues and events take place in the HCC Performing Arts Building, 2112 North 15th Street, Tampa.

We are pleased this year that FOMI is coordinating with Gasparilla International Film Festival to bring a wide range of serious and whimsical films, live performances and digital installations to Tampa Bay audiences. “We are so happy that this year’s Gasparilla International Film Festival could collaborate with the Ninth Annual Festival of the Moving Image”, said Eric Polins, president of the 2011 GIFF. “This will be an incredible weekend for film in Tampa.”

FOMI brings to the mix new work by NYC performance artist Pat Oleszko; plus the DIGITAL LOUNGE SHOW, a group of video sculptures, installations and international short films looping in the HCC Art Gallery; Tampa filmmaker Victoria Jorgensen will screen THE EVENING ROOM, a preview of her new film shot in Tampa Bay. Artist/author Margaret Ross Tolbert and others will share work about Florida.

NYC performance artist Pat Oleszko, with a nod (and wink) towards the fest’s unofficial theme, water, is creating two works for the fest; the slime of the recent marinade with other unnatural acts to foul, and an installation: the quit draggin’ and the see change. Margaret Ross Tolbert will present films and a lecture based on her book AQUIFERious, and also a program with Florida author/filmmaker Bill Belleville titled, Springs Eternal?, concerning Florida freshwater springs.

On opening night, Wednesday, March 23, a reception for the Digital Lounge Show will be held in the HCC-Ybor Art Gallery, 5:30-8:00pm. Video installations by Francesca Talenti from North Carolina are complimented by a fresh collection of digital works by 20 international independent filmmakers.

At 7:30 pm on the HCC Mainstage, the Atlantic and Pacific Award winners will be screened. More screenings will be held outdoors at New World Brewery, 9:00-11:00pm.  Free and open to the public. Note: the gallery will be open all hours of the fest.

Richard Treacy

1962-2011

 

Richard Treacy (49) died in his sleep of a stroke on Monday, February 28 at Baypoint Nursing Home, where he was being rehabilitated from a previous stroke. Prior to that Richard was homeless and lived on our front porch for more than two years.  A memorial service is being planned for a future date.

A Message from the Pastor 

 

It is hard to believe but the season of Lent begins next Wednesday.  We will be gathering for worship to remember our mortality as we are marked by ashes on our foreheads.  

 

Lent is a 40-day season (We don’t count Sundays as they are days of celebration.).  The scripture is full of “forties.” To name just two:  The people of Israel spent 40 days wandering in the desert after leaving Egypt, and Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness at the beginning of his ministry.

 

During this 40-day season it has been traditional to give up something.  I remember giving up chocolate when I was a child.  More recently it has become a time to take on some new spiritual discipline such as daily prayer or weekly worship.  I like the latter idea, although as I think about how I will “celebrate” Lent, I wonder whether it would be good to do both, but I believe this is personal for each of us. 

 

Whatever you decide I hope you will let God lead you, empower you, and give you the strength to follow through on your spiritual commitment.

Spiritual and Personal Enrichment Classes Being Offered

 

The March and April classes of our Spiritual and Personal Enrichment series have been scheduled. 
   
Start time for classes is 6:30 pm. Most are free (though donations will be accepted to help defray costs) and open to the public. 
All classes require advance registration. You may sign up in the social hall on Sundays or call the church office (727-323-5857) Monday-Thursday, 9: 15 am-5:00 pm, and we will do it for you.   
  
Our Spiritual and Personal Enrichment series includes workshops, classes, study groups, discussions, worship services, and seminars aimed at educating and edifying. 
The two classes–Cooking with the Times and Basic Computer Skills--offered in the next two weeks are filled, but look for a complete roster of scheduled March and April classes in your Sunday bulletin on March 13. Sign-up sheets for these classes will be available in the social hall then.

Time’s Short to Register for Flapjacks and Flea Market Spots

Saturday, March 12, 8:30 am – 3:00 pm, social hall and parking lot 

 

This Sunday is your last chance to register in the social hall for a space at this annual event.  Spaces are $20 and if you need a table, that’s another $5. 

 

Even if you aren’t selling your wares you will want to come early for the $5 all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast (Last year we were sold out by 11:00 am.). Then you can mosey out to the parking lot to find some treasures from the more than 30 vendors. 

 

At lunchtime, we will be offering grilled hot dogs and hamburgers for those whose stomachs still are growling.

 

Flea market space registration will be available until Thursday March 10, but then you will have to drop by the office to fill in a form and pay.  Call 727-323-5857 to let us know when you are coming. 

 

See you on March 12. I’ll be staffing the KOP MCC flea market table where we will be selling lots of stuff cleared out of our closets!   

 

A Grand Evening is Planned
Saturday, March 19, 7:00 pm, sanctuary and social hall

 

Join us for a grand musical evening featuring keyboardists Thom Cooper, Bob Groves, Joel Ogburn, Lewis Scott, Erick Thacher, and others playing selections from a classical and popular repertoire.   

This fund-raiser includes an hors d’oeuvres reception.  

Tickets are $15 and are available in the social hall on Sundays or by calling the church office Monday-Thursday 9:15 am – 5:00 pm.  

Garden Party Scheduled for Spring Beautification 
Saturday, March 19, 8:00-11:00 am
  
The Ground Hogs Team (the new name for our Garden Team) is under the new leadership of Lette Pascoe and she’s scheduled a date for a spring clean-up and planting prep of our front and back gardens.
  
Volunteers are needed to help with the work.  Please bring gloves, something to drink, and sunscreen.

 Leather Men’s Brotherhood, producers of The Leather Masked Ball ®, is celebrating its sixth anniversary fundraising season. 

 In its five year history, The Leather Masked Ball has become one of the Largest and most well respected Leather charitable events on the East Coast, receiving a Pantheon of Leather Award for their event in 2010.  This year The Leather Masked Ball will reach a milestone of over $100,000.00 in charitable gifts. 

 Local IRS recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organizations are invited to participate in this year’s selection process.  Grant applications are available online and are now being accepted until April 8, 2011 for consideration for this year’s Leather Masked Ball 6 Grant Awards.
