On any given weekend you will find over 15 weekly scheduled drag shows in GaYBOR! Some of the locations include: Bradley’s on 7th, Chelsea Nightclub, G.BAR, Hamburger Mary’s, Honey Pot, Rise Sundays, Steam Fridays, Tease Saturdays. There are also special performances at PLAY, JJ’s, Gaspar’s Grotto & more. Drag took off in the late 70’s at a club on 7th Ave & 15th Street called, The El Goya. Later the club became Track’s & then Pleasure Dome. Today it’s Czar’s. It was very common to find local celebrities, like then Tampa Mayor Dick Greco, business leads & even some Hollywood Stars in the clubs. With this local resurgence of Drag it’s quite easy to see how The Honey Pot has become the Drag Pageant Palace of the South. Top notch performers are now flocking to GaYBOR to perform & be discovered. Reality TV Shows are almost becoming common in GaYBOR. This past weekend there were crews from Discovery, Bravo & The History Channel all here. So where is our favorite location to see a drag show in GaYBOR?  The magnificent stage at The Honey Pot is perfect for the big production numbers, large custom set designs & Celebrity Stars. Taking us back to the days of The El Goya & small cocktail table seating there is a 2010 version… Hamburger Mary’s, there is something to be said about the intimate setting with great food & drinks. This is also where the promenade star of The El Goya, Miss Joey Brooks performs here weekly. So it was no surprise that the national 54 city book signing tour of “The Official Drag Handbook” started here at Hamburger Mary’s. So what is the future of Drag in GaYBOR? As Miss Brooks said, “Honey we are just getting started!”.

 

This Friday is the Monthly GaYBOR District Conation Meeting. The meeting starts at 4PM and this months meeting will be hosted by Sherie Schiller and Mgr. Bosco at Gaspar’s Grotto.
